A.R.T. Alumni Newsletter, January 2010

|
Fellow Alums and Friends of the Alumni Association, |
We're proud to announce that last month the A.R.T. Alumni Association celebrated our fifth anniversary. Our all-volunteer group has created a truly unique organization to support our graduates. We'd like to kick off this New Year with four exciting announcements. First, we're delighted to launch a new Collaboration with Harvardwood, the powerful non-profit arts networking organization for alumni, staff, students, and faculty of Harvard University. Starting this year, if you join the A.R.T. Alumni Association you'll automatically become a Full-Member of Harvardwood. Second, we're thrilled that the Alumni Lab Artist Grants Program will continue in 2010. The guidelines and application are now available on our website. Third, we're elated to reveal our new Alumni Umbrella Fundraising Program to help our graduates raise tax-deductible funds for non-profit performing arts projects. Last, but certainly not least, we're jubilant, ecstatic, and generally hyperbolic about welcoming the new American Repertory Theater Artistic Director/CEO to our community of graduates at the Alumni Brunch with Diane Paulus in New York on January 25th. You'll find details on all these announcements below.
Thanks for your continued support of the Alumni Association.
Happy New Year!
Yours,

A.R.T. Alumni Join Forces with Harvardwood
|
Every year around 22 remarkable theater artists, mostly actors, graduate from the A.R.T. Institute. A.R.T. Alumni are an intensely talented and accomplished group, and while we love getting together at our alumni events, there's a limit to how much our relatively small group of mostly actors can help each other. We've been searching for a way to offer more opportunities and resources to our alumni and we've finally found it in Harvardwood, the non-profit arts organization for Harvard alumni, students, staff, and faculty in the arts, media, and entertainment. Harvardwood boasts over 800 members in the U.S. alone, including many writers, directors, and producers in film, and television, and top executives at the major Hollywood studios. Through this wonderful collaboration A.R.T. Alumni will expand our network of industry professionals and Harvardwood will expand their network of high caliber theater artists.
Starting this year, joining the A.R.T. Alumni Association includes a full-membership to Harvardwood. Instead of paying $70 ($30 for A.R.T. Alumni Association dues and $40 for Harvardwood dues) you will pay only $45 for your combined membership. For new members, or for those who are current members of the A.R.T. Alumni Association, please sign-up for your A.R.T. Alumni/ Harvardwood membership by following this link. For those who already have a Harvardwood account, you can pay the extra $5 to upgrade your account to A.R.T. Full Member status by using the following link, and then send an email to director@harvardwood.org with the subject line "UPGRADED TO A.R.T. Full Member" to have the Director change your status on the Harvardwood site. Be sure you are signed into your Harvardwood account when accessing this page, otherwise you may not get the $5 rate! We'd like to thank A.R.T. Alumni Secretary Alexandra Fulton and Harvardwood Director Kelley Johnson for making this collaboration possible. We're looking forward to many brilliant joint events and projects in the months and years to come. |
2010 Alumni Lab Grant Program
|
|
The A.R.T. Alumni
Lab is pleased to announce the continuation of the Alumni Lab Artist Grant Program. We
will once again award grants of up to $2,000 to support the development of new
work including full-length original plays, adaptations, translations, musicals,
solo plays, interdisciplinary theater projects, and film scripts. Last
year, our inaugural year, the selection committee was overwhelmed by the
creativity and independent vision of our alumni. We received 26 applications, but
were only able to fund 6 projects. If you did not receive funding last year, we
would like to encourage you to, please, apply again.
The Project Initiator must be a graduate of the A.R.T. Institute and a full-member
of the Alumni Association. This year, for the first time, we will also welcome
applications from all full-members of Harvardwood. Opening up our grant program to Harvardwood
members will allow us to expand our donor base and increase the number of grants
available to all. Preference will be
given to applications with two or more A.R.T. Alumni on the creative team.
Recipients of Alumni
Artist Grants must commit to a public reading or presentation of the work (or
work-in-progress) between April 2010 and March 2011.
See our website for the application and guidelines. The deadline for applications
is Monday, March 1, 2010.
We look forward to receiving your submissions and
supporting the development of alumni works.
Sincerely,
A.R.T. Alumni Lab Co-Chairs

Alumni Umbrella Fundraising Program
|
|

Our Alumni are independently minded artists, many of whom work on producing their own scripts, shows, and productions. Raising funds for these
projects can be daunting, particularly if you don't have your own non-profit organization. If you are planning a not-for-profit
show, the A.R.T. Alumni Association can help you raise funds by
providing you with a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) "umbrella". Your production must be open to the general public and include at least one free performance (this could be a workshop, dress
rehearsal, preview, or discussion forum).
Our first Umbrella Project is "Extropia" led by Alumna Alexandra Fulton '04. Check out Extropia's electrifying website.
For more information about the Umbrella Program please
contact the Alumni Association at alumni@amrep.org.
