A.R.T. Alumni Newsletter, June 2009 |

Fellow Alums and Friends of the Alumni Association, |
Thanks to a growing band of alumni volunteers and generous
donors, the A.R.T. Alumni Association has flourished over the past year. I have
the pleasure of recognizing all the incredible people that brought rewarding
alumni activities and publications to life in the last few months.
This year, for the first time, the Alumni Lab offered
Artist Grants of up to $1500 to six graduates and their collaborators to create
their own work and present it to the public. Lab co-chairs Shawn Rene Graham
'96 and Peter Richards '05 initiated this new program and raised the
funds to make it happen. See below for more details on the Lab and the 2009 grant recipients. We'd like to thank the
generous donors who made this first round of Alumni Artist Grants possible: Carol
and Harvey Berman, Beth Pollock, David and Carol Richards, Robert
Brustein, Lincoln and Victoria Graham, and Michael Roitman.
Nurit Monacelli '00 launched the new Alumni
Mentoring Program, which matches recent grads with experienced alumni of
similar interests and backgrounds from cities across the country.
Marguerite Stimpson '01 organized an ambitious Alumni
Survey on the subject of the Institute Showcase. The survey, which was
presented to current Institute students and A.R.T. faculty, contained invaluable
feedback on ways to get industry attention for and give a distinctive edge to the
Institute Showcase. Together with Adam Kern'08, Marguerite also created
the first edition of the "Showcase Bible" --a book for 2nd Year Institute students containing a production time-line for the Showcase and contact
information for agents and managers.
We have several new and improved on-line networking tools to
keep our graduates connected, working, and inspired. The Association Officers
started the Alumni Facebook Group,
and Sean Kelly '01 set up our LinkedIn Group. Our Yahoo! Alumni List-Serve is now in its eighth year with more postings every month.
For the past four years, Association Secretary Dan
Domingues '03 has edited the Alumni News website, culling together the
career and life-events of our graduates. Dan also initiated the Alumni Spotlight, which features detailed biographies of some of our most
intriguing and adventurous alumni. Look for the 2009 Alumni News update in July.
We continued hosting our regular events this year.
Association Vice President Tor Hillhouse '04 and Treasurer Alexandra
Fulton '04 organized the Life After Showcase discussions and the Fall
Gatherings in New York and L.A.
Mara Sidmore '06, Nick Newell '01, and I led
the Transcript Committee, which worked with the Institute administration
to create a new on-line system for ordering A.R.T. Institute transcripts.
And finally, Shawn Rene Graham '97 and I joined
forces to establish our 501 (c)
(3) status. Two years and countless government forms
later, the Alumni Association is officially tax exempt!
Here's to an incredible year and many more to come.

| Alumni Lab Update |

Greetings Fellow Alums,
This year the A.R.T. Institute Alumni Association Lab launched
the Artist Grant Program, awarding funding to projects proposed by six
graduates. The grants ranged from $1000 to $1500 and were used to cover various
costs such as rehearsal space, artist fees, and marketing materials. The
funding helped alumni increase their visibility in the dramatic arts community
and foster collaboration with both established and emerging artists.

The grants supported projects initiated by individual alumni
artists, as well as projects developed by companies founded and run by one or
more A.R.T. Institute graduates. Dana Marks '03, Managing Director of Little
Green Pig Theatrical Concern in Durham,
North Carolina, received a grant
for her company's genre-defying original new work Dog from Hell. Michael Wheeler '02 and Laura Nordin '04,
founding members of the Toronto-based Praxis Theater, were awarded funding for
a bold new stage adaptation of Camus' Stranger. (See the complete
list of the grant recipients below).
A.R.T. founding artistic director Robert Brustein commented,
"I think the Alumni Lab Grants are an extraordinary idea and the best way, short of forming a
permanent company of Institute graduates, of keeping likeminded artists
together."

Send Us Your Alumni News!
|
Fellow Alums, It's the time of year when the Alumni News Page on the A.R.T. website gets an upgrade. It's staggering to think how
much has changed since my last page update in July of 2008
-- incredible highs (America's first black president) and shattering
lows (the near collapse of our economic system). I'm sure I'll be
equally staggered by how much A.R.T. alumni have accomplished in the last
year.
Please consider submitting an update to the Alumni News Page. Here are my simple instructions: 1.
Write a one paragraph (up to five sentences) update of the projects
you've been involved in this past year. This can include films,
plays, multimedia projects, books, magazine articles, weddings, births,
classes, or trips from between June of last year and June of this
year. Anything you can think of -- this is your time to let the A.R.T.
community share in your experiences. 2. E-mail that paragraph to me at dandomingues@hotmail.com putting YOUR NAME, CLASS YEAR and DISCIPLINE in the subject line. (e.g. Dan Domingues, 2003 Acting) 3. You may also attach a recent production still or candid photo in jpeg format. Please include complete credits like:
Who's in the photo.
The name of the project.
Performance Venue.
The photographers name.
I may have to edit your submission and accompanying photo for space and clarity. The deadline for submissions is June 22nd, 2009. I look forward to hearing from you all, Dan Domingues (2003)
