Dear Alumni, |
| Dear Alumni,
As most of you know, the American Repertory Theatre is now in the process of searching for a new artistic director. Some of you have expressed great concern over this process in your recent comments on the alum list-serve (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/institute-alumni/ ). The Alumni Association has made every effort to communicate with the committee and remind them of the significance of the Institute not only to the A.R.T. as a professional theater, but also its crucial role in training future theatre artists. Below is a copy of the letter we sent last week to the committee chair Harvard University Provost Steven Hyman. Please take a moment to read it. I also encourage you to add your name to the petition set up by A.R.T. grad Amy Nora Long (05) expressing the importance of maintaining A.R.T.'s mission to create innovative theatre (see link in the below letter). Take a moment to add your comments to the petition, including your thoughts on the Institute. This search for a new artistic director will affect all of us graduates. The reputation of our degree hangs in the balance. It's crucial that we make it clear to both the search committee and the future leader of the A.R.T. that the Institute alumni are a unified and powerful group of talented artists and we have a great deal to contribute to the future of the theatre and direction of the Institute.
Yours, Rebekah Maggor (03) Vice President, A.R.T. Institute Alumni Association http://www.amrep.org/iatt/alumni/

Hello All....
Please save the date for the next ART Institute Alumni Winter Party and Fundraiser: it will be on Monday evening, February 25, 2008 in New York City. All details to follow with invitations shortly after the New Year.
ALSO--
We're actively seeking bands for the 2008's party entertainment. Last year featured Chris Colt's ('90) fantastic band The Mercantillers, and the year before it was Trevor Oswalt's ('01) the Lost Tricks. We'd love to showcase a new alumni or ART-related band each year, so if you have one, or you know of one to recommend in case they haven't volunteered, please let me know!
All the best,
Devon Berkshire ('06)

| Alumni Association Letter to the Harvard Search Committee for A.R.T. Artistic Director |
December 12, 2007
Dear Provost Hyman, The Alumni of the American Repertory Theatre Institute for Advanced Theatre Training have been following your committee's search for Artistic Director with great interest. As graduates of the A.R.T. Institute we care immensely about the future of the theater and also about the future of our alma mater. The A.R.T. is not only a theater that produces great art, it is also an institution that trains the theater artists and artistic leaders of the future. The decisions made by your committee will strongly effect our alumni as well as the greater theater community. We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that the A.R.T. Institute graduates run our own alumni organization. The A.R.T. Institute Alumni Association incorporated in the State of Massachusetts in December of 2005. The Alumni Association is an independent non-profit organization founded by Alumni, run by Alumni, and for Alumni. The Institute Alumni Association has grown vastly in past two years. We are now a unified group of around three-hundred gifted artists including actors, writers, directors, filmmakers, designers and educators. For more information on our organization and on our alumni's accomplishments please see the attached document and link to our website below. The Alumni Association hopes you will take several things into consideration as you near your final decision. We hope you will choose a future leader who will continue to create challenging, forward-thinking, innovative, experimental work. Many of our alumni and others in the theater community have signed a petition expressing this desire. You can view this petition (created by Institute Alumna, Amy Nora Long, '05) at the following site: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/saveart/ We are equally concerned about this future artistic leader's ability to maintain and strengthen the training of young theater artists who will continue this tradition of excellent and resonant theater-making. It is crucial that the next artistic director be not only a great and adventurous artist, but also an educator and a person who will take up the mission of the Institute, including building ties between our Institute graduate students, the undergraduates in the College, and other groups within the Harvard community. We are encouraged by the President Faust's new task force on the arts and we hope this future vision for the arts at Harvard will include the A.R.T. Institute and alumni. In addition, this future leader must be able to reach out and bring in a more diverse and younger audience. We hope that training future artists, strengthening ties with the Harvard community, and reaching out to a broader audience will be central to this new leader's vision. It is this combination of great artist, educator, and community builder that we need. We hope you will take these points into consideration. We will be more than happy to send an alumni representative as a guest to your next committee meeting. My contact information is below if you have any questions. Respectfully Yours,
