A Personal Narrative
with
Andrea Schafer, Vaughn Wascovitch and Farron Allen
The AEC opens "A Personal Narrative" September 28 with an Opening Reception from 6-9pm. The exhibition showcases photographs by DAAP student Andrea Schafer and Texas A&M Professor Vaughn Wascovich with a sculptural installation by Cincinnati-based artist and UC Adjunct Professor Farron Allen. The exhibition is one of the participating shows highlighted in the regional fotofocus event.
Vaughn Wascovich's series Welcome to Hard Times: Photographs of East Texas, is heavily influenced by his childhood growing up in a dying steel town and his return to familiar places in adulthood to offer dialogue on his search for 'the depth of a place'.
Wascovich received his BFA from Youngstown State University. After several years in advertising and working as a freelance photographer, he returned to school to earn his MFA at Columbia College in Chicago. He currently lives and works from Commerce, Texas where he is an Associate Professor of Photography.
Farron Allen, a Sculptor from a family of coalminers in West Virginia, explores his experience growing up in a strict Southern Baptist household against modern issues and the politics surrounding the AIDS epidemic and the societal taboo that notions of religion can impart on subject matter translated to be contrary to its fundamental beliefs.
Andrea Shafer is an undergraduate studying fine arts at the University of Cincinnati in the Design Architecture Art and Planning program. Her work, Bridging the Narratives, explores the uses of different mediums with dissimilar technologies to find a balance between the old and the new and the wondrous in daily menial tasks. Schafer focuses on the pursuit of this balance by romanticizing the present reality of an often over-techno-fied existence. Her intimate images of two friends/lovers enjoying simple moments together are familiar and touching portraits that depict the reality of unsung life moments.
'A Personal Narrative' runs through November 9 and opens on Friday September 28. The opening reception is from 6-9pm, at the AEC, 27 west 7th street, Covington, KY 41011.
The AEC is Covington's government-sponsored gallery and community art space. If you want to learn more about the AEC or Covington Arts, join the Covington Arts Facebook page. Questions? Contact Natalie Bowers, Arts Director, 292-2322, nbowers@covingtonky.gov

Licking River Greenway & Trails Update:
Construction will begin the week of September 10th on Phase 1 of the paved levee trails as part of the Licking River Greenway. Trail work will stretch from Levassor Avenue to Clayton-Meyer Park on Thomas Street with a hopeful completion date of early November.
As a reminder this project was funded through the Department of Local Government (DLG) Recreational Trails Program Grant for $80,000, a grant from the Durr Foundation for $30,000, a generous donation from former City Commissioner Jerry Stricker for $20,000, and the remaining funds from Covington Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds dedicated to recreational improvements.
Construction will impact the playground at Clayton-Meyer Park and require its removal. The intent is to replace with new pieces once trail construction is finished. Once completed this multi-use, asphalt paved trail will link with our gravel nature path for nearly 2 miles worth of trails.
Please feel free to contact the Recreation Department if you have any questions related to the project.
Next Available Licking River Greenway Trail Day:

Art Lovers and Cultural Enthusiasts,
This Sunday, Covington's 8th annual Art Off Pike urban art show - the show that supports artists and downtown Covington as a great place to live, play and work, wholly staffed by volunteers and is just generally a great creative day in the city - commences at 11:00 am on 7th Street in the heart of downtown Covington between Madison and Washington streets. Over 60 local, regional and national artists will have their best work on display for what many are saying will be the best show yet. This event is open to the public and free of charge and opportunities for buying unique gifts and Christmas presents will be aplenty.
Art Off Pike also boasts an exciting children's component called Picasso's Playground, an entire section of the festival dedicated to kids, which makes this day not only for art lovers but for families! Picasso's Playground will be loaded with interactive art projects for children of all ages and facilitated by art & cultural organizations, including the Carnegie Visual and Performing Center for the Arts, Baker Hunt Arts & Cultural Center, Behringer Crawford Museum, the Kenton County Library, My Nose Turns Red, Bbooks, Art Machine and so many more.
Delicious and nutritious food will be available, provided by Deeper Roots Coffee, LIME Taqueria, Cafe de Wheels, Streetpops, C'est Cheese Cincy and Yankee Doodle Pretzel.
There will also be music playing throughout the festival, mostly of the very groovy jazz variety chosen by our fearless Chairman and urban art lover Jim Guthrie, a perfect set of tunes to titillate the ears as your eyes enjoy the artwork.
We look forward to having you all at Art Off Pike this Sunday. Thanks to you all for another successful and creatively inspired event.
Warm Regards,
The Art Off Pike Committee

Holmes Middle School teacher invited to Education Nation
Holmes Middle School Teacher Hallie Hundemer-Booth was one of the many teachers who participated in Education Nation in New York. She was one of four educators on a panel discussing Common Core. The panel was led by Rehema Ellis, chief education correspondent for NBC News.
Education Nation was a three-day event, September 23-25, that focused on the future of education in America. This was the third year for the summit.
"It's been absolutely a phenomenal experience,'' Mrs. Booth said. "We're all sitting down and looking for common solutions - not only leaders in the education world, but business and political leaders discussing areas of concern and problem solving.''
Mrs. Booth has been teaching in Covington schools for six years. She was invited by NBC News.
"Mrs. Booth is an extraordinary teacher,'' said Lynda Jackson, superintendent of Covington Independent Public Schools. "We are proud of the fact that Mrs. Booth was invited to this important summit to not only represent Covington Schools, but our state. This is a testament to our great teachers and the programs we are implementing in our schools.''
Mrs. Booth also participated in the Teacher's Town Hall Meeting, a round table discussion to find solutions that are doable financially and realistically. She attended a dinner where Colin Powell spoke on Bridging the Gap between High School and College and Career Readiness.
