Licking River Greenway & Trails Update:

Construction will begin the week of September 10th on Phase 1 of the paved levee trails as part of the Licking River Greenway.  Trail work will stretch from Levassor Avenue to Clayton-Meyer Park on Thomas Street with a hopeful completion date of early November.

As a reminder this project was funded through the Department of Local Government (DLG) Recreational Trails Program Grant  for $80,000, a grant from the Durr Foundation  for $30,000, a generous donation from former City Commissioner Jerry Stricker  for $20,000, and the remaining funds from Covington Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)  Funds dedicated to recreational improvements.

Construction will impact the playground at Clayton-Meyer Park and require its removal.  The intent is to replace with new pieces once trail construction is finished.  Once completed this multi-use, asphalt paved trail will link with our gravel nature path for nearly 2 miles worth of trails.

Please feel free to contact the Recreation Department if you have any questions related to the project.

NK ADDNKADD Partners with Covington Housing Authority's HOPE VI Grant

The NKADD has developed a new partnership with the Covington Housing Authority's Hope VI grant to offer employment services and job readiness classes to residents. The program will have a three tiered approach that consists of one on one career counseling, job readiness classes, and a wage subsidy element.

It is the goal of this partnership to help residents achieve self-sufficiency. To this end, the career counselor will guide residents on an individual basis through the job seeking process and beyond. An NKADD staff person will be located on-site at Golden Towers to offer residents an opportunity to meet individually to discuss career goals and develop strategies to overcome barriers. In addition, the career counselor will offer job leads and resume assistance. Appropriate referrals will be made to partnering agencies. Follow up services will be offered for each client to ensure employment maintenance and career advancement opportunities.

Job readiness courses will also be offered on site at City Heights twice a week. These classes will equip residents with the necessary skills they need to enter the workforce. The course will consist of a three to four hour workshop each session that will instruct residents in "soft" skills training, interviewing, professionalism, resume writing and a myriad of other readiness activities. These classes will provide residents with a sense of camaraderie which will help encourage residents to achieve their goals. The Workforce Division recognizes that confidence is a critical element of finding a job. By celebrating successes, the courses will help individuals to enter the job search process with a confidence that may not have previously existed.

The final component of the program is wage-subsidy. The NKADD Career Counselor will build relationships with local businesses to identify employer needs. For employers that are interested in hiring new staff, a subsidized employment opportunity may be offered to qualified housing authority residents.

This partnership presents an opportunity to bring employment services to individuals. A full array of partner services will be offered on-site with the realization that it often takes a combination of programs for individuals to move towards self-sufficiency. The Workforce Division is extremely excited about this opportunity.

AOP poster 9-2012

The 8th Annual Art Off Pike Street Arts Festival is Covington's premier public arts event and invites a wide variety of artists to sell and display their works amongst an urban setting in the heart of Covington's downtown. Event organizers expect this year's show to top 2011 with increased attendance (over 3,000) and artist booths (90). The event will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 11am to 5pm. This year, the event is set to again capitalize on the generous support of The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation.  Click here for the latest event updates!

Organizers expect 90 artist booths in this year's festival that will occupy Seventh Avenue between Madison and Washington Streets. Average prices of art sold at the festival has historically fallen between $10 and $400 per piece. The festival, supported and conceived by the Westside Action Coalition neighborhood association with the City of Covington and Center for Great Neighborhoods, celebrates the Arts in the heart of the city's downtown.

Ways to Save at the Library this September

This September when you visit the library, take a look at the bottom of your receipt. What you will see is how much money you saved by checking out those items at the Kenton County Public Library versus purchasing them on your own. This is just one way the Library is helping you save money as it celebrates National Library Card Sign Up Month this September.

Library staff are working with local businesses to provide items and incentives for library card holders. These deals include:

  • Show your Kenton County Public Library card at Graeter's Buttermilk Pike location and you will get a bite-sized ice cream for free.
  • Silverlake the Family Place recreation center is offering free one-day passes to first time users at each Library location while supplies last.
  • In September, while supplies last the Friends are providing $1 Book Bucks when anyone checks out an item.
  • On Friday, September 21, Totter Otterville will give children free admission from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for any child who shows a Kenton County Public Library card.

Library staff is also featuring a variety of online, money-saving services throughout the month including:

-Zinio/Online Magazines - more than 50 of today's most popular magazines are available on your smartphone, tablet and PC (save on individual and magazine subscriptions).

-Ancestry.com - search one of the largest genealogy databases for free on library computers (Savings: $22.95-$34.95/month)

-Learning Express-free tutorials, practice tests, courses and eBooks in math, social studies, writing skills and reading. (average cost of tutor = $30/hour; test prep sessions $300+)

-The BookLook function on the Library's app-scan a book at a store and see if the Library owns it (unlimited savings)

To get a free library card, all you need is a valid ID with your current address or a recent piece of mail. Children can also receive a free Library card with parent permission. We do not share information with other agencies or individuals. Visit www.kentonlibrary.org for more information, to register for a program, see a complete listing of programs or for directions.

Also, the Library now has offers more than 50 of today's most popular magazines online via the Library's website. Go to www.kentonlibrary.org and click on the Zinio icon. You will need your Kenton County Public Library card to access. Great for your mobile device!
