Olympic Field Day at the Covington Summer Program
Students at John G. Carlisle Elementary School brought home the gold at the first annual Olympic Field Day at Holmes High School. The field day was sponsored by the Covington Summer Program, which focuses on academic enrichment with a twist. The program is mixing learning and fun. In the spirit of the summer Olympics, each elementary school in the summer program has selected a country to represent their school. The Olympic Field Day was the culminating event for the first week of the program. "It was awesome,'' said Stacie Strotman who oversees the summer program. Students mocked the summer Olympic Games in their own way. As the Olympic theme song played, students paraded around the track waving flags and carrying banners from the countries they represented. Students also competed in six Olympic events such as cornhole, tug of war, dizzy bats, obstacle course and hula hoop relays. Latonia Elementary School came in second and Ninth District Elementary took third place. More than 300 students participated, along with youth workers, teachers and fitness coaches. Students can still enroll in the summer program. Each Covington elementary school, in partnership with the City of Covington Recreation Department, is hosting the summer program. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. - 12: 30 p.m., Monday - Friday, June 18 - July 27 (closed the first week of July). The schools provide breakfast and lunch for students. Students participate in reading and math activities, but also can join in on Fitness Rocks, take arts and crafts classes, go on field trips and take drum and piano lessons. Students can also check out library books on site. The Holmes Campus will host its summer program from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 9 - August 2. Transportation will be provided. For more information, contact Stacie Strotman, 392-3179. Holmes Graduates Earn More than Half Million Dollars in Scholarships Graduation at Holmes High School was a little different this year. Students selected Covington employees to hand them their diplomas. Each student chose an employee who made a difference in their educational lives. Students selected elementary and high school teachers, counselors, bus drivers and instructional assistants. Dennis Maines, principal at Holmes, said made the change because he wanted to make graduation more meaningful for students and also to show staff the impact they have on students. Students were thrilled about having someone they know give them their diplomas. Lynn Siry, a teacher at Latonia Elementary School, was honored that two of her students - Shannon Sullivan and Nicole Lang requested her. She taught them in the third and fourth grades. "It's the best thing that could ever happen to a teacher,'' said Mrs. Siry, who has taught at Latonia for 18 years. "This is pretty exciting. Tears did come to my eyes. It's like a dream.'' Students in this graduating class were awarded more than $600,000 during Honors Night. Students will be going away to college - some as far away as Florida, some throughout the state, Union College, Western Kentucky University, Eastern Kentucky University of Louisville, University of Kentucky and while others will stay close to home, selecting Northern Kentucky University, Cincinnati State and Gateway Technical and Community College. ______________________________________________________

Malton Art Gallery, Southbank Partners, and the World Peace Bell are excited to present the Humanity Outpost, "a sculptural celebration of peace and humanity" on July 1 to July 22, at the World Peace Bell Park in Newport Kentucky. The Humanity Outpost exhibition will feature the extraordinary outdoor sculptural installation of artist Edward Casagrande. The mission of our cultural event is to revitalize communities through the celebration of the arts. For three weeks in July, programs will be scheduled to celebrate the creative output of humanity. There will be art, music and performances...free to the public.
Home to the world's largest free swinging bell, World Peace Bell Park is the vision of Wayne Carlisle who built the park as "A symbol of freedom and peace, honoring our past, celebrating our present and inspiring our future". The Park and Bell, have become an icon of Newport. Several other monuments are housed on the park, incluing the "Flame of Eternal Peace", a tower erected by
WP Butler, standing as a powerful statement and reinforcing the idea of world peace.
Groups from the World Choir Games will be performing FREE Friendship Concerts in the World Peace Bell Center on July 7th at 3:00 pm. Come out and see the Prairie Voices (Canada), the Xinghai Conservatory of Music Victoria Show Choir (China), and the Columbus Children's Choir (USA). In case of bad weather these concerts will instead take place at the Levee.

The 8th Annual Art Off Pike Street Arts Festival is Covington's premier public arts event and invites a wide variety of artists to sell and display their works amongst an urban setting in the heart of Covington's downtown. Event organizers expect this year's show to top 2011 with increased attendance (over 3,000) and artist booths (90). The event will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 11am to 5pm. This year, the event is set to again capitalize on the generous support of The Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation.
The festival's juried Call to Artists is open, welcoming artists to submit an application
to sell their work at the event. Organizers expect 90 artist booths in this year's festival that will
occupy Seventh Avenue between Madison and Washington Streets. Average prices of art sold at
the festival has historically fallen between $10 and $400 per piece. The festival, supported and
conceived by the Westside Action Coalition neighborhood association with the City of Covington
and Center for Great Neighborhoods, celebrates the Arts in the heart of the city's downtown.
Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. The Call was made June 6th and the
deadline for application is July 20, 2012. Click here to access the Call To Artists application information. Click here to view complete press release. Please visit www.artoffpike.org for additional details. |
