Historic Preservation

Beth Johnson - preservation award 5-2012State Preservation Award Received

On May 31 at the 34th Annual Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation Preservation Awards, the Cities of Covington and Bellevue were awarded the Ida Lee Willis Service to Preservation award for the video Historic Preservation: Saving Place for its effectiveness as a teaching tool to educate northern Kentucky residents, business owners and others about the benefits of preservation and carrying this message throughout the state. Beth Johnson, Covington's Preservation and Planning Specialist, and Jody Robinson, Bellevue's Assistant City Administrator, were the executive producers of the video and accepted the award that was given in a ceremony at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort.

Ida Lee Willis Memorial Preservation Awards are presented each May, in observance of National Historic Preservation Month, and recognize those who have demonstrated an understanding of and appreciation for the value of preserving and reusing Kentucky's historic and prehistoric resources, whether through the rehabilitation of an important structure or community resource or through a lifetime commitment to encouraging and promoting historic preservation.  The awards are named for the late First Lady Ida Lee Willis, who was appointed first executive director of the Kentucky Heritage Commission (now the Kentucky Heritage Council) in 1966.

The 23 minute video, Historic Preservation: Saving Place, was produced in the summer of 2011 and stars local homeowners and business owners from the river cities of Bellevue, Covington and Newport, as well as some state experts who explain the importance and benefits of historic preservation in their own words. Nick Clooney was generous and agreed to be the narrator for the project. The video was premiered at the Kentucky Main Street Conference in January of 2012 and has been widely viewed on the internet. The video can be seen at the following link: http://www.makecovingtonhome.com/program-and-incentives/historic-preservation/    Click here for press release.

Arts District

The AEC Presents

"Funny Mirrors"

Nothing in this world is exactly as it appears to be. This is the premise  AEC's "Funny Mirrors"  which hosts work by artists Jeff Casto, Billy Simms and Helena Cline.

Curated by Katie Rentzke,  "Funny Mirrors" asks deep questions about the values we hold as individuals and how those values play out in our society.  Each artist tackles social justice based issues such as genocide, environmental policy and child welfare, yet with a touch of dark humor and playfulness, making their work approachable and thought provoking. The exhibit is open to the public and all are welcome.

Coinciding with the exhibit, is a play entitled "Fuddy Meers".  Directed by Dan Doerger, the play integrates artworks from the exhibit into the scenes.

The play will be performed on June 8, 9, 15, 16 at 8:00 p.m.  Click here for additional information.

Redevelopment Pioneers

Jim and Donna Salyers have taken a fabulously novel approach to downtown redevelopment

Article excerpted:

Two key people in the effort to resuscitate downtown are Jim and Donna Salyers, who repeatedly gambled on downtown real estate at a time when scores of others either packed for the suburbs or went out of business. And while commercial real estate Business Theory 101 calls for owners to buy a building and then find dependable tenants, the Salyers wound up taking another approach: buying buildings and then - sometimes by necessity - also creating the businesses to fill them.

Jim Salyers said 99 percent of his property is rented and that The Madison Event Center and The Madison South - rental facilities that bookend the east side of one key block in the business district - handle about 500 weddings a year. When the buildings are booked up on a weekend, 2,000 people flock downtown, Salyers said.

Kentucky biotech executives discuss their industry's growth potential, challenges and successes in this article in Medical News.

Article excerpted:

Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, and Kentucky is to thank. It's no secret that over the past decade Kentucky has invested heavily in biotechnology. The successful "Bucks for Brains" program, which matches public dollars with private donations to encourage academic research, has attracted top researchers from around the world to the bluegrass state. In fact, more than 75 percent of new biotech companies have spun out of either the University of Kentucky or The University of Louisville.

Medical News sat down with several Kentucky biotech executives who shared their thoughts.

HAC graduates photo

The Housing Authority of Covington (HAC) is elated to announce we have 4 residents successfully graduating High School from Holmes High School in 2012.  Each student has worked extremely hard to achieve this great milestone.

HAC hosted a celebratory dinner for each graduate and their family on Thursday, May 17, 2012 to show them our support and appreciation.  Each graduate has different visions and ambitions for the future.  Some are off to College and some are off to the workforce.  However, each of them are going to accomplish great things by dreaming and believing in themselves.  The graduates have goals to become Chefs, Police Officers and a Cosmetologist.

Students save lives collecting money for measles prevention

CIPS giant ck to red cross measlesStudents at Ninth District Elementary School in Covington "saved the day'' and lives as they raised $500 in five days through their Learning Project called the Measles Prevention Initiative.  Students presented a $500 check to the Cincinnati Area American Red Cross on May 1 at Ninth District.

During April, students learned about the disease, including the fact that 450 children around the world die each day because of measles. Students learned how they could make a big difference. Each student that brought in one dollar received a Measles Prevention Lapel pin which represented saving a life and making the students a hero. The students were also educated on the importance of vaccinations and how they prevent them from being attacked by diseases - which makes them a Super Hero.

The students now are challenging other schools to raise money for measles prevention with the questions, "Can you save the day? Can you raise at least $450 in 5 days? Are you brave enough to try?"

Schools accepting the challenge should contact Carman Lake, Red Cross Volunteer at 859-801-4383 to find out more how their school can begin its Service Learning project.

Latonia Students Portray Historical Figures at American History Wax Museum

CIPS wax museum Fifth grade students at Latonia Elementary School portrayed historical figures in the school's American History Wax Museum. When visitors approached, the students became animated and brought history to life, telling the story of the figure they were portraying.

The Wax Museum was the culminating project in teacher Mike Mencsik's Social Studies class. The students researched their characters as well as designed and created their costumes and props.  Among the characters the students portrayed included Betsy Ross, President Barack Obama, Paul Revere, Sojourner Truth, Douglas McArthur, Sandra Day O'Connor, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Pocahontas and many more.

Holmes Students View Live Surgery

CIPS live surgery broadcast Holmes has taken hands-on learning to another level. Students interested in the medical field observed a live spinal fusion surgery streamed from Christ Hospital.

Hallie Booth, science teacher at Holmes Middle School, arranged the live feed. Students watched the procedure in the auditorium of Holmes High School. One of the goals of Holmes is to make learning more relevant.

The broadcast provided students with a life experience. "Since I was three I've wanted to be a vet or a doctor," said Charlotte Hollis, a seventh grade student at Holmes. "This helped because the surgeon just said it was the best thing he's done in his life."

The surgical broadcast included a step-by-step narration by Neurological Surgeon Robert Bohinski and his surgical team. The students e-mailed questions to the team and received immediate responses. Students from Holmes asked questions such as, how many surgeries does the surgeon perform in a day and how is a bone donor matched?

Holmes was among 13 schools that observed the surgery and the only school in Northern Kentucky that participated. High school students enrolled in the Health Career Cluster and students from the middle school attended the broadcast.

Students kept their eyes on the screen. Some were interested in the procedures. "I wanted to learn what happens during a surgery - how it goes," John Hampton said. Others were interested in the professions.

"I want to be a nurse, maybe a surgical nurse, or maybe a doctor," Thomas Brockhoff said.

Marissa Clay said she is not interested in a health career, but did not want to pass up the chance to see a surgery performed.

Senior Services NKY logo

Animeals on Wheels

To ensure that older residents in Boone, Kenton, Campbell & Grant counties can enjoy the companionship of their pets without sacrificing their nutritional needs Senior Services of Northern Kentucky began the Animeals on Wheels program which provides donated pet food to pet companions in the Northern Kentucky Community.

Animeals on Wheels photo"Many of our clients benefit from having a pet in their home but struggle to find the funds to purchase pet food and supplies," said Kenneth Rechtin, Interim Executive Director of Senior Services. "Without assistance, our low-income elderly pet owners are carving portions from their meals to share with their pets."

Each month our volunteers will deliver pet supplies to Meals on Wheels recipients at no cost to them. In doing so this not only provides personal contact for our seniors but also maintains that the seniors nutritional needs are not being sacrificed for their beloved pet.

To find out more about how to donate pet food, or to become a volunteer please call 859-491-0522.

Foster Care logoIn 2010, 19,500 children were substantiated as victims of abuse/neglect in the state of Kentucky. This is an average of 55 children per day. More must be done to protect children and strengthen families. In Kenton County alone, there were 1,770 reports of child abuse and neglect. At any given time, there are over 900 children in out-of-home care due to abuse and neglect. Now more than ever, the need for loving families is crucial. Out of the 900 children in care, more than 40% are from Kenton County. 190 of these children are from Covington. Currently, there are only five Covington foster homes. With so few foster families in Covington, children are forced out of their homes and placed in unfamiliar neighborhoods. If we could offer the support of a safe and nurturing home within their community, these children could be the bright future of Covington.

Many people want to make a difference in the life of a child but don't know how, or if they can. You can qualify as a foster/adoptive parent if you are financially and emotionally stable, single, married, widowed or divorced. The Cabinet provides medical coverage, daycare assistance and a monthly per diem to assist licensed resource homes caring for foster children. Free training is offered to those who wish to discover if foster care/adoption is the right choice for them.

The Carnegie presents DONT CROSS THE STREAMS

Carnegie Dont Cross the Streams

A popular early 80's film about ghosts and the people who bust them is receiving a stage musical adaptation by a local theatre. When their world is shattered by a "cease and desist" letter from the lawyers of Columbia Pictures, the cast and crew give the show a new title, make delirious changes to an increasingly unrecognizable script and recruit a handsomely clueless soap opera actor to play the role of Peter Venkman. Silly string ion streams and a softshoe dance battle rule the day in a madcap theatrical farce a la NOISES OFF and Waiting for Guffman.

Performances will take place at the Know Theatre (1120 Jackson Street, Downtown Cincinnati) on the following dates:

*          Thursday, June 7     8:30pm

*          Friday, June 9         7:30pm

Home to the world's largest free swinging bell, World Peace Bell Park is the vision of Wayne Carlisle who built the park as "A symbol of freedom and peace, honoring our past, celebrating our present and inspiring our future".  The Park  and Bell, have become an icon of Newport.  Several other monuments are housed on the park, incluing the "Flame of Eternal Peace", a tower erected by

WP Butler, standing as a powerful statement and reinforcing the idea of world peace.
