The Homeowner Faade Program, funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program, is administered by the City of Covington's Community Development Department.  The purpose of this program is to assist homeowners with improvement to faades (visible from the public right-of-way) of qualifying residential properties. Fire Department

Fire Dept SealWinter fire safety tips for the home

The cost of home-heating fuels and utilities has caused many residents to search for alternate sources of home heating. Residents are using wood-burning stoves and space heaters, and homes with fireplaces are burning wood and man-made logs. All these methods of heating may be acceptable; however, they are a major contributing factor in residential fires. Many of these fires can be prevented. The Covington Fire Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency encourage you to follow these safety tips to maintain a fire-safe home this winter:  Click here to view complete list of safety tips!

Assistant Police Chief Teaches Student Drum Corp

As music programs are reduced in school, students wanting to learn music have a unique opportunity to do so as Assistant Police Chief Spike Jones teaches them to play instruments in a drum corp.   The idea is to give the children something positive to do.  Lt. Col. Jones wants to get the kids in school and believes that kids that are involved do better academically.  It is also an opportunity for the children to see a police officer as a mentor.  Students get positive reinforcement for their efforts:  captain bars for leadership skills and Gold Star coneys for snacks.   Lessons are conducted at the OASIS Center at Robbins & Greenup.  Click here to view the news story from Local12.com.

We will establish an FSS Interest-bearing Escrow Account for each eligible participating family to off-set any increases in rent as a result of their increased income due to employment, in accordance with HUD guidelines. For more information and to enroll in the FSS Program, please contact Glenda Taylor FSS Coordinator with the Housing Authority of Covington at 859-491-5311 or by email at gtaylor@hacov.org.

Housing Authority of Covington Graduates 17 from G.L.A.S.S. / Self-Sufficiency Program

The Housing Authority of Covington recently graduated its 10th consecutive G.L.A.S.S. class on December 20.   G.L.A.S.S. is an acronym for "Get Learning and Start Succeeding."  A graduation celebration took place at the City Heights Recreation Hall in Covington on Dec 20, 2011.  The  event was well attended by family, friends and staff members.

The purpose of the G.L.A.S.S. class is to improve the quality of life of residents living in public housing by increasing key work and like skills and building awareness surrounding community resources. Seventeen residents received certificates of program completion.  Additional cause for celebration surrounded eleven residents who passed the ACT/National Career Readiness exam, two who passed their GED tests, two who enrolled in Gateway College, and one who enrolled in cosmetology school.  Eleven G.L.A.S.S. students also found full or part time employment during the semester.

Some of the barriers that keep residents from achieving self-sufficiency and financial independence are:

  1.      Lack of High School diploma/GED
  2.      Lack of job experience
  3.      Lack of workplace skills
  4.      Lack of transportation
  5.      Lack of affordable child care

We assist participating residents in overcoming these barriers by providing classroom instruction, support coordination services, GED tutoring, job listings, free child care during class, and transportation supports.

The G.L.A.S.S. curriculum covers many important life and workplace topics including: Becoming Purpose Driven, Values/Self Esteem, Importance of Support Systems, Conflict Resolution, Parenting Skills, Financial Literacy, HIV /and other sexually transmitted disease- prevention/signs and symptoms, Diabetes-prevention/signs and symptoms, Goal Setting, Problem Solving and Commitment and The Job Search/Work Place Etiquette  We also partner with several local organizations for everything from food and clothing assistance, to employment supports, career testing and counseling, health education, financial literacy and relationship skills.

We would like to thank Gateway Community College, the NKY Community Action Commission, the NKY Health Department, the Women's Crisis Center / Stronger Together Staff, the KY Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Covington Public Schools and The American Diabetes Association for their participation and support for the GLASS program. Special thanks also go to Myshamil Walker, our devoted and gifted GED Tutor.

Our next G.L.A.S.S. semester is scheduled to start February 7, 2012.  Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:00-11:00 a.m., in the City Heights Recreation Hall.  For more information, contact Phillip Ridley at 859-292-3241.

Gateway Accepting Scholarship Applications for 2012-13

Looking for an interest-free method to help you pay for college tuition, books and fees? Scholarships are the answer!

Gateway Community and Technical College offers 24 different categories of scholarships, and the time to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is now.

"In the 2011-2012 year, we provided just over $224,000 in merit-based scholarships to eligible students, and you don't have to be a straight-A student to qualify," said Will Bradley, coordinator of financial aid and scholarships.  "Eligibility requirements vary by category, but scholarships are available for single parents, minority students, and students with at least a 2.0 average who show academic promise."

Here's how to apply:

1.       Complete a scholarship application at www.gateway.kctcs.edu - Click Financial Aid; then Scholarships.

2.       Explain why you believe you should receive a scholarship. Indicate your educational and career plans. Please include your personal situation - children/family, financial income, work situation, etc. Bradley says including the personal situation is optional, but it provides the scholarship review committee with a complete understanding of your situation.

3.       You can apply for more than one scholarship, but review each scholarship carefully because some require separate applications and written statements.

4.       Provide two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.

5.       Provide the Scholarship Application, Typed Statement, letters of recommendation (and other requirements for those scholarships requesting extra steps) to the Financial Aid Office no later than April 1, 2012 (postmarked by April 1, 2012 will be accepted).

If you have any questions, please contact Will Bradley at 859-442-4186 or William.bradley@kctcs.edu

New Latonia Map!

An important part of the LBA's mission is to promote Latonia businesses, as well as to promote Latonia as an attractive place to do business.

The LBA fulfills our mission in a new way this year with a professionally designed map/pamphlet.  If you haven't seen the map: 100 places are located on an actual map graphic. Some of the places are the following: attractions, schools, churches and business. Great photos are on the cover with our winning slogan.

The map project was a collaboration between the West Latonia Neighborhood Association, the Ritte's East Neighborhood Group, and the Latonia Business Association and was funded through a place matters mini-grant.

Maps are available from LBA members/businesses and at the Latonia Post Office. If you would like multiple copies of the map, please contact Karen at krowe@covingtoncharities.org  or Marvin mwischer@kwmechanical.com.

Including 7 e-books for your healthy resolutions!

How are your resolutions going?  Hopefully you have the support you need to learn new skills and make the changes you want to this year.  Your support could be friends, family, community and even a favorite website.  Have you thought of the library as part of your support system? I've found reading books and articles that support the changes I'm trying to make helps keep me on course and reminds me of my goals.  Discover a book, audio, e-book, CD,  DVD, or digital resource every few weeks related to your resolution and you'll have another tool for success by your side or at your fingertips.

You can find many books and DVDs in our catalog but we also have many e-books available that you can borrow by downloading to your Kindle, Nook, iPad, smartphone, or your computer.  They range from fiction bestsellers to healthy cookbooks to children's books.  If you need help getting started, sign-up for one of our classes at the branches or online.

Praised by the New York Times for his "eloquent, compelling, and exquisite playing," Dr. Kogan offers a truly must-see program for arts patrons and the intellectually curious.

Tickets for The Mind and Music of Beethoven with Dr. Richard Kogan can be purchased through The Carnegie Box Office, open Tuesday through Friday 12pm - 5pm, in person or by phone at (859) 957-1940. Tickets are also available online at www.thecarnegie.com.

The Mind & Music of Beethoven with Dr. Richard Kogan is co-produced with The Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, a training center for post-graduate mental health practitioners who want to incorporate psycho-dynamic techniques in their therapy work with clients and patients. The 2011-2012 Carnegie in Concert Series is sponsored by the Otto M. Budig Family Foundation.

Carnegie's In-School Education Programs

The Carnegie has been invited to be a part of an exciting new fundraising initiative called power2give.org. power2give.org empowers you to give directly to arts and cultural projects in the region. Nonprofit organizations post projects in need of funding. YOU bring them to life!

Through power2give.org, The Carnegie is working to raise funding for its in-school arts workshops. These workshops engage children through creative activities that incorporate the arts with a wide range of courses, from Language Arts to Science.

Thanks to the generosity of the Kentucky Arts Council (KAC), donations made in support of The Carnegie's in-school arts workshops will be eligible for a dollar for dollar matching gift from the KAC!

We hope that you will help support this wonderful program, helping us in our mission to ensure that area children have the opportunity to experience arts in their classroom.

BCM Floods exhibit Feb-May 2012

Our Rivers' Fury: Past and Present Ohio Valley Floods

February 18 - May 27, 2012

Get swept away into Behringer-Crawford Museum's latest exhibit, "Our Rivers' Fury: Past and Present Ohio Valley Floods." Taking a special look at the regional floods that occurred in 1884, 1913, 1937 and 1997, this exhibit explores how these floods changed forever the Ohio River Valley. The rising waters altered lives and left lasting marks in the community. In addition, the exhibit discusses why floods occur, aspects of flood prevention, the important roles levees play in our everyday lives and provides multi-sensory experiences through interactive components and documentaries produced by WKRC/Local 12 personality and celebrated local historian Dan Hurley.

Visitors will have the opportunity to become part of the Ohio Valley Flood history by sharing their personal stories about the floods that ravaged our region in 1937 and 1997. If you have a story or experience you would like to share, contact BCM for scheduled dates and times.

This exhibit will open for museum members and future members at 6:00 pm on February 17 with a presentation by noted historian Rick Bell, author of The Great Flood of 1937 - Rising Waters, Soaring Spirits. He will discuss the book's in-depth look at the 1937 flood and its effects on the community.
