Covington Arts

'A New Reality' at the AEC

Show runs through January 13, 2012

The AEC in Covington, KY presents an exhibition curated by Mary Heider called 'A New Reality' which highlights the talents of multimedia artists Robert Fry, Jennifer Grote and Michael Scheurer.

AEC Dec 2011Using a variety of mediums, styles and scales, these artists use every day ordinary objects, but assemble them in a unique way. The final instalation is an enlightening commentary on how the current economic downfall has required many to reassemble their day-to-day lives, generating a new vision of their future or A New Reality.

Robert Fry is compelled to take the imperfect walnut or fallen oak, destined for firewood, and shape it into a large scale sculptural form. His works use the unexpected variations found in wood that, when assembled with other materials, complement his simplicity of line, use of rhythmic structures and playfulness with color.

Jennifer Grote uses assemblage to create sculptural reliefs and installations that vary in scale and medium, but consistently achieve elegance in form through her use of texture and subtle color. From wood to torn filter paper, from cast-off piano parts to porcelain bits threaded with scrap wire, Grote's precise execution in joining discordant materials leads to beautiful art from reassembly.

Michael Scheurer's ingenuity in assemblage emerges as he selects from his treasure trove of collected materials and creates exciting compositions in cigar boxes of varied size. Faces, structures, textural bits, graphic riffs, paint and ink create varied depths and dimensions as Scheurer experiments with traditional boxed assemblage and offers enticing outcomes.

These artists' works, by transcending simple component reassembly, they prepare us for changes in our world, comfort us amid unplanned change, and offer new, hope-inspiring visions when confronting an unexpected future.

Gateway Accepting Scholarship Applications for 2012-13

Looking for an interest-free method to help you pay for college tuition, books and fees? Scholarships are the answer.

Gateway Community and Technical College offers 24 different categories of scholarships, and the time to apply for the 2012-2013 academic year is now.

"In the 2011-2012 year, we provided just over $224,000 in merit-based scholarships to eligible students, and you don't have to be a straight-A student to qualify," said Will Bradley, coordinator of financial aid and scholarships.  "Eligibility requirements vary by category, but scholarships are available for single parents, minority students, and students with at least a 2.0 average who show academic promise."

Bradley said Gateway has general scholarships available for students in any field, but some are dedicated to specific disciplines, such as advanced manufacturing, electrical technology, computer-assisted drafting and design, education, nursing and allied health. In addition, Gateway also has tuition-assistance funds available from a federal grant specifically for low-income students interested in certain allied health careers.

Here's how to apply:

1.       Complete a scholarship application at www.gateway.kctcs.edu - Click Financial Aid; then Scholarships.

2.       Explain why you believe you should receive a scholarship. Indicate your educational and career plans. Please include your personal situation - children/family, financial income, work situation, etc. Bradley says including the personal situation is optional, but it provides the scholarship review committee with a complete understanding of your situation.

3.       You can apply for more than one scholarship, but review each scholarship carefully because some require separate applications and written statements.

4.       Provide two letters of recommendation from non-relatives.

5.       Provide the Scholarship Application, Typed Statement, letters of recommendation (and other requirements for those scholarships requesting extra steps) to the Financial Aid Office no later than April 1, 2012 (postmarked by April 1, 2012 will be accepted).

If you have any questions, please contact Will Bradley at 859-442-4186 or William.bradley@kctcs.edu

Kentucky Enterprise Fund Providing Grants

The Kentucky Enterprise Fund is accepting applications to provide grants of $30,000 or investments of $250,000 to $750,000.  The goal of the Kentucky Enterprise Fund is to stimulate private investment in Kentucky-based technology companies.

Kentucky start-up and small businesses (with 150 or fewer employees) who are commercializing new products, processes or technologies, have until January 12, 2012 to submit their applications for the funds to the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC).

There is no limit to the number of companies that might be awarded funds or to the amounts awarded. It's all based on the quality of applicants and the types of awards requested, said Casey Barach of the ezone and Northern Kentucky Tri-Ed.

Locally, the ezone helps start-up companies navigate the process of financing and determines eligibility for statewide programs. Since 2001, it has helped companies raise more than $121 million in loans, grants and equity.

To determine if your company is eligible, contact the ezone at 859-292-7780.

Wanted: Books for HealthPoint kids

Healthpoint logo

HealthPoint is seeking donations to continue our Reach Out and Read program, which promotes literacy and gives new books to our pediatric patients. The major source of funding to purchase books, Reading is Fundamental, has been cut from the federal budget.

At HealthPoint, medical providers "prescribe" reading to their youngest patients and families. Then each child chooses a new book to keep. The program is a way to help these low-income children discover reading, keep reading and build a home library.

The books are inexpensive, but mean a lot to our families. As Dr. Elmer Martin, HealthPoint medical director and pediatrician, says: "Our patients don't have the economic ability to purchase books, and reading is the portal to education success."

If you can help, please use the DONATE button to make an online contribution with your credit card. Checks may be written to HealthPoint Reach Out and Read and mailed to 1401 Madison Ave., Covington, KY 41011. For more information, contact Laurel Humes, 859-655-6157 or click here.

Some Kentuckians are eligible for services from Assurance Wireless, a cell phone service from Sprint that provides a free wireless phone and 250 free minutes of wireless voice service monthly to eligible, low-income families in Kentucky.

This program is available to eligible individuals receiving Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA) or Section 8, Low Income Home Energy Assistance (LIHEAP), or the National School Lunch Program's Free Lunch Program.  For more information, read the press release or fact sheet.

The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky (ESNKY) is now open and serves as the NKY region's only cold weather emergency shelter for adults. The agency's goal in the winter is to shelter those who are at-risk of hypothermia and loss of life due to the cold. The shelter operates every evening from 6:00 pm until 8:30 am the next morning and is located at 634 Scott Street, Covington. A Kentucky photo ID is required unless escorted by police or referred by St. Elizabeth emergency rooms. Area churches and schools provide evening meals, and residents from all over Northern Kentucky volunteer to assist the staff with running a safe and welcoming facility. Northern Kentucky University and Cincinnati State have provided the shelter with student nurses and social work interns to provide individual care of their guests. The recent Open House gifted the shelter with many donations from generous Northern Kentuckians (see photo). Keep Your Resolution with the Help of the Library

Fitness, education, new hobbies and more

The New Year means New Year's resolutions. Many people resolve to get fit, save more money, find a new job or learn a new skill or hobby. But they often find it's hard to keep resolutions because they don't have the support from others or the finances to do so. The Kenton County Public Library can help people keep their resolutions without spending a dime and provide the support system you need.

The economy is tough and sharp computer skills are a must in today's job market. All three branches offer a variety of computer classes, including how to setup your computer, using basic Microsoft, using the Internet for job searching, using excel and email. There are even classes on how to use E-readers, Ipods and Ipads. The Library also offers specific job-skill classes like resume writing. The Erlanger and Durr branches also offer free GED classes. This makes it easy to resolve to finally get that high school diploma.

The Library can even help people get fit with introductory classes to yoga, Pilates and

Zumba. Many people enjoy working out at home with a video but aren't sure what they will enjoy. They can check out a few workout DVDs and books to see what they like before purchasing something.

A lot of people are looking for a hobby and to meet people with similar interests. The Library offers several themed book clubs, movies and fitness for seniors, knitting classes, open crafting, scrapbook by the month and writing workshops.
