Ohio Riverfront Development & Improvements

Monday, December 5, 2011

6:00 pm

City Commission Chambers

638 Madison Avenue, Covington

The Ohio Riverfront is important to Covington's future development, and we have an opportunity to shape what it will look like!

Our neighbor to the north, Cincinnati, is making significant improvements to its riverfront, for public use/public recreational space, as well as for private developments like The Majestic Show Boat, the Montgomery Inn & Boathouse and the under-construction Christian Moerlein Lager House.

At this Community Input Session, we will share how other communities have improved their riverfronts, what Covington's riverfront currently looks like, and how possible improvements can be made along the Ohio Riverfront.

Make Holiday Shopping Go Smoothly

The National Crime Prevention Council has some tips to help you shop safely while getting those great holiday bargains throughout the shopping season.

·         Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car.

·         Shop online with companies you know and trust. Check a company's background if you are not familiar with it. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

·         Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases.   Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit  card or bank statements as they come in.

·         Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as onetime or multiuse disposable credit cards or money orders, at online stores and auction sites.

·         Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information.

·         Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket.

·         Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.

·         Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home.

·         Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit.

·         If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you get separated. Select a central meeting place and make sure they know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help.

'A New Reality' Opening Reception at the AEC

December 2, 2012 from 6-10pm

On December 2, 2011 from 6:00 -10:00 pm, The AEC in Covington, KY presents an exhibition curated by Mary Heider called 'A New Reality' which highlights the talents of multimedia artists Robert Fry, Jennifer Grote and Michael Scheurer.

AEC Dec 2011Using a variety of mediums, styles and scales, these artists use every day ordinary objects, but assemble them in a unique way. The final instalation is an enlightening commentary on how the current economic downfall has required many to reassemble their day-to-day lives, generating a new vision of their future or A New Reality.

Robert Fry is compelled to take the imperfect walnut or fallen oak, destined for firewood, and shape it into a large scale sculptural form. His works use the unexpected variations found in wood that, when assembled with other materials, complement his simplicity of line, use of rhythmic structures and playfulness with color.

Jennifer Grote uses assemblage to create sculptural reliefs and installations that vary in scale and medium, but consistently achieve elegance in form through her use of texture and subtle color. From wood to torn filter paper, from cast-off piano parts to porcelain bits threaded with scrap wire, Grote's precise execution in joining discordant materials leads to beautiful art from reassembly.

Michael Scheurer's ingenuity in assemblage emerges as he selects from his treasure trove of collected materials and creates exciting compositions in cigar boxes of varied size. Faces, structures, textural bits, graphic riffs, paint and ink create varied depths and dimensions as Scheurer experiments with traditional boxed assemblage and offers enticing outcomes.

These artists' works, by transcending simple component reassembly, they prepare us for changes in our world, comfort us amid unplanned change, and offer new, hope-inspiring visions when confronting an unexpected future.

The Homeowner Façade Program, funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program, is administered by the City of Covington's Community Development Department.  The purpose of this program is to assist homeowners with improvement to façades (visible from the public right-of-way) of qualifying residential properties. Covington company develops training solutions

 Excerpted from nky.com~

In tight times like these, corporations continually are searching for innovative ways to boost profits and efficiency. Implementing new processes can take time and stretch resources. And ineffective communication could take a toll on even the grandest of ideas.

So when Wendy's launched a customer- satisfaction program to more than 1,500 restaurants, it contacted TiER1 Performance Solutions in Covington. TiER1 designed online training courses to effectively convey the new plan to the restaurant chain's thousands of employees.

Founded in 2002, TiER1 is a leader in online learning, recognized by Inc. 5000 for the fifth consecutive year. It has experienced 40 percent revenue growth this year, and has about 165 clients, including Kroger, Macy's, General Electric, Dell, Cintas, Fidelity Investments and FedEx.

"In the health care space, we're seeing the impact already," says Normand Desmarais, TiER1 co-founder and chief technology officer. "Whether it's changes in electronic medical-record systems or customer satisfaction, these are changes that impact large factions of the workforce."

TiER1, which projects 30 percent revenue growth in 2012, currently employs about 80 people nationwide, 50 in Northern Kentucky.

"Production work, the actually building of the materials, will happen in Covington," Desmarais says. "That's going to realize additional job growth here."

COAT DRIVE

St. Vincent De Paul has placed barrels in each of the Covington Firehouses again this year.

Times are tough for many of our citizens, young and old, and this is a small way to give a helping hand. coat graphicOne coat can make all the difference to a person doing without this year. If you are cleaning out your closets and have a coat you are no longer going to wear, please put it in the barrel so someone can stay warm this winter.

Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness.

Covington Fire Department won the $10,000 grant!

You helped us do it!

During the last 2 months, the Covington Fire Department has been in a competition for a $10,000 "Be Fire Smart" grant from Liberty Mutual. The competition involved getting people to take a short 10-question quiz and crediting the Covington Fire Department when they were finished. We had over 1,300 individuals take the quiz for us - and because of that we won the grant. This was a NATION wide competition and our success speaks volumes about our families, friends and our community at large. We simply wouldn't have been successful without the Covington community supporting us, and for that we are very grateful.

Some of the potential uses for the grant include:

*          Purchasing hardware that would allow us to produce and print onsite inspection reports;

*          Adding to our fire extinguisher training program by purchasing needed equipment;

*          Purchasing software upgrades that will allow us to upgrade our preplan site drawings;

*          Purchasing additional public education materials;

*          Looking into starting a business-friendly, self-inspection program for qualified occupancies.

Thanks again for supporting the Covington Fire Department and helping us help others!

Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Liberty Mutual for their generosity and their support of fire departments across the nation.

ArtWorks Announces Opportunity to Sign Up for SpringBoard!

Registration for ArtWorks' January 2012 SpringBoard session is now open. The 8 week course begins on Wednesday, January 11th and will run through February 29th, convening each Wednesday from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Interested candidates must sign up at www.SpringBoardCincinnati.org by December 2nd.

SpringBoard is ArtWorks' business planning and development program for artists, artisans and creative entrepreneurs targeting sustainability in small business. SpringBoard offers entrepreneurs a variety of resources to achieve their artistic and economic goals by creating a unique and collaborative learning environment. Creatives will build a comprehensive business plan while learning valuable marketing and financing management skills. Access to resources and an opportunity to develop relationships with other entrepreneurs and community partners will set these small businesses up for success. SpringBoard is initially focusing its impact on commercial corridors in Over-the-Rhine and Downtown, connecting graduates with potential storefront spaces.

A small classroom size and ample time to engage with professionals such as attorneys, accountants, branding experts and mentor businesses will give these entrepreneurs the tools they need to successfully launch and grow their businesses. The course fee includes the tuition to the 8-week course, as well as personalized consulting sessions with the SpringBoard facilitator.

"Though Once Blind Studios is almost a decade old, we felt like a start-up after relocating to Cincinnati from Los Angeles. SpringBoard came at the perfect time, taking us back to basics by helping us rework our mission statement and business plan for our new environment. We were also thrilled to meet local business resources like realtors and lawyers, as well as like-minded artisans who are passionate about their work and our neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine.

- Leisa Wilcox, Once Blind Studios, LLC

Funded by the Carol Ann & Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, SpringBoard's officially kicked off its first course on June 7th. To date, 38 creative entrepreneurs have participated in the course. Due to a commitment to a small class size, all those who register may not have a spot in this upcoming class. ArtWorks will host ongoing sessions to accommodate the demand.

TWO-HEADED CALF COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

COMMUNITY INVITED TO NOMINATE

Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park is inviting the community to apply for the museum's second annual Two-Headed Calf Community Service Awards. The awards are meant to celebrate the nominee's extraordinary achievement for service to the community, to history or to learning.

For service to the community: Generosity and vision

This award is a tribute to a citizen who has embraced community service not as a singular activity but with a deep commitment to doubling his or her contribution by combining the gift of service with a vision for how the quality of life in our community can be and is affirmatively improved by supporting the arts, education, culture and history that enrich each of us. The honoree's service might take the form of a contribution of his or her time, talent or treasure - or better yet, the sum of all of those. By the example of his or her stewardship and generosity, the honoree is a role model, especially for young people.

For service to history: Scholarship and public service

This award honors a resident of our community who has contributed to the preservation and understanding of our regional or state history, and whose scholarship, in the tradition Herodotus, captures the past not solely as a matter of scholarship but equally as a matter of public good.

For service to learning: Academic excellence and innovation

This award is open to an individual (a student, a parent, a teacher, a principal, an administrator or a volunteer), a school or even a school district. An auxiliary group affiliated with education can be nominated (for example, a scout troop, single teacher, a teacher and his or her class, or whole school. The award is meant to celebrate extraordinary teaching and learning, especially in disciplines dear to the Behringer-Crawford, such as history or archeology. The honoree or honorees who receive this award do not only demonstrate academic excellence, though we applaud that; the academic excellence is side by side with an innovative, energetic approach to teaching and learning.

Interested applicants can contact BCM Executive Director Laurie Risch (lrisch@bcmuseum.org or 859-491-4003) for an application or visit the museum's website at www.bcmuseum.org. Applications are due by December 9. Applications can be submitted by mail, in person or by email.

About the awards

The Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park is serious about its mission as "a center for the collection, presentation, study and enjoyment of our natural, cultural, and visual and performing arts heritage" - and serious about its exhibits that capture Northern Kentucky's story.

But the museum has always had a good sense of fun, too. And perhaps nothing symbolizes that good humor more than the museum's taxidermic prize, the two-headed calf. So, in the spirit of both serious devotion to the mission of the museum and the BCM's reputation as a fun place to visit, we present our second annual "Two-Headed Calf Community Service Awards."

Typically awards celebrate one exceptional achievement. The fastest runner wins the race. The most talented violinist is awarded the gold medallion. Behringer-Crawford Museum's Two-Headed Calf Awards recognize that very often true excellence rests with those who demonstrate achievement beyond a single contribution. Just as two heads are better than one, so, too, is the service of the people these awards honor.

The awards will be given at a banquet at the Northern Kentucky University ballroom on the evening of March 1, 2012. Reservations for the banquet can be made by contacting the museum at 859-491-4003 or by contacting the event chair, Leo Calderon at (859) 572-5821 or calderon@nku.edu.
