Open House - You're Invited!
Healthpoint Covington
Thursday, September 8, 2011
5:00 - 7:00 pm
1401 Madison Avenue
Covington, Kentucky 41011
Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication at 5:15 pm
Tours and Light Refreshments.
Hosted by HealthPoint Board of Directors
HealthPoint Family Care's newest health center is at 1401 Madison Avenue in Covington. The Dixie Pike, Scott Boulevard and Latonia OB/GYN offices will close; medical providers and their patients will transfer to the new office. The new HealthPoint Covington health center is housed in an extensively renovated 20,000 sq.ft. former warehouse. The center consolidates three former medical offices in Covington and HealthPoint's administrative office. HealthPoint leased space at all four previous offices. HealthPoint purchased the Covington building.
"As a non-profit organization, HealthPoint must always seek to improve operating efficiencies," said Chris Goddard, CEO. "Owning the HealthPoint Covington center reduces expenses and allows us to invest the savings toward services that directly impact our patients."
The $1.7 million renovation of the Covington center was funded in part with an $836,400 federal grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Curb Strip Maintenance
This is the time of year when those pesky weeds seem to flourish in the cracks of sidewalks, in curb strips and in storm gutters.
The City of Covington is committed to working with residents and property owners to make our City clean, safe and attractive. As a result, we are asking you to keep the weeds trimmed between your property and the gutter. Many are unaware that property owners are responsible for maintenance of the sidewalks, curbs, storm gutters and curb strips under the City of Covington Property Maintenance Code.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this matter and being a part of improving our City and its neighborhoods.
New Boarded-Up Building Ordinance
Recently the City of Covington Board of Commissioners amended §92.06 of the Nuisance Code to require boarded openings to be painted on buildings that are deemed dangerous due to blight and/or neglect. Pursuant to this ordinance change, the Code Enforcement Department is currently attempting to notify owners of affected properties.
If openings are not repaired with appropriate windows or doors within 30 days of notification, the boards must be painted a color that is consistent with the color of the structure, or painted black, and must be cut to fit the opening.
Non-compliance with this provision of the Nuisance Code can result in a fine of $100.00 per day per violation. City staff hopes to work with property owners in a cooperative spirit regarding this issue as opposed to the imposition of fines.
Should you have any questions regarding this ordinance or would like to report property with unpainted boarded openings, please contact Code Enforcement at 292-2323.
We've Got You Covered
The City of Covington Code Enforcement Department, in conjunction with YouthBuild of Northern Kentucky, is proud to offer assistance with graffiti removal through the "We've Got You Covered" graffiti abatement program.
Here is how the program works: Once graffiti is detected on your property, you can contact the Code Enforcement Department to schedule YouthBuild volunteers to assist you with covering affected areas. Property owners are required to supply the paint and volunteers will provide tools and labor. YouthBuild teams will address graffiti several times each month subject to favorable weather conditions.
If you are interested in participating in the "We've Got You Covered" program, please contact Code Enforcement at (859) 292-2323 to be scheduled for the next paint date. Thank you for your interest and participation.

New Opportunity - Façade Grant Program for Homeowners
The Homeowner Façade Program, funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program, is administered by the City of Covington's Community Development Department. The purpose of this program is to assist homeowners with improvement to façades (visible from the public right-of-way) of qualifying residential properties. The funds are available in two targeted redevelopment areas: Central Core and targeted streets in the Latonia area. Under this program, households which meet income and other requirements may obtain grants to assist with certain exterior improvement.
The façade improvements will be made available to address exterior code violations, which must be addressed prior to undertaking other improvements, on façades visible from the public right-of-way. Examples of eligible repairs include roof repair/replacement, gutter repair/replacement, repair/repainting of exterior walls and trim, porch repairs, handrails, steps, and walkways. Lighting and security improvements may be eligible on a case-by-case basis. Other improvements may be eligible as funding is available.
Homeowners wishing to participate in the program must submit an application and required documentation to the Community Development Department. Funds are available on a first come, first served basis as funding permits.
Click here to view map of eligible areas.

HOPE VI Update
The Housing Authority, with the help of the Jacob Price Residents, the City and surrounding neighborhoods has finalized the HOPE VI site plan. Now that we know exactly where the buildings will be located and have agreed what they will look like, it is now time for the architects and engineers to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Over the next several weeks, a lot of time will be spent figuring out how to get water and electricity to the buildings and how the bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms will be configured. The Housing Authority, along with the Integral Group Developers, are on track to complete the demolition of the remaining units of Jacob Price Homes this fall and to start construction on the utilities and streets shortly thereafter. The actual construction of the units will start after the first few months of 2012.

Gateway and TANK Create Shuttle Service to Gateway Campuses
Shuttle Service is Free to Students/Faculty/Staff and Begins August 15
Gateway Community and Technical College and TANK have announced an expanded partnership to provide enhanced bus service to all Gateway campuse, which began August. 15. The partnership creates a shuttle service between Gateway campuses that is in addition to regular TANK routes.
This expanded service was made possible in part with financial support from the Health Professions Opportunities Grant and a Department of Health and Human Services grant that is designed to increase access to higher education for low-income students.
The added shuttle service will be available between campuses Monday through Thursday, when most Gateway classes are scheduled. The service will use a regular TANK bus to provide continuous service throughout the day, starting at the Gateway Urban Center at 8:00 am and stopping at each Gateway campus until concluding at the Urban Center at 9:25 pm.
No paperwork is required to use the service; however, riders will need to show a valid and current Gateway ID. Cards are issued at no cost to enrolled students and can be obtained at a Gateway library. The Gateway Shuttle is open to the general public as well. Fare (without a Gateway ID card) is $1.50.

19th Annual
freshART
at
Behringer-Crawford Museum
Plein Air Event and Live Art Auction
September 17, 2011
Behringer-Crawford Museum's freshART, one of the area's most unique fundraisers, returns for its 19th year from 6:00 to 9:30 pm on Saturday, September 17 at the museum in Devou Park. The art, freshly created by prominent local artists in the park during the day, will be auctioned off to friends and supporters of the museum following a reception and dinner under the stars.
This event helps to support many of the youth programs offered at the museum and provides an opportunity for friends and supporters to purchase new artwork while having some fun. Ticket prices include cocktails, dinner by the bite, silent auction, and a live auction.
The silent Auction that evening will include goods and services donated by community residents and businesses as well as original art including ceramics, sculpture, jewelry and textiles created by local artists. The proceeds will be directed toward youth education programs held at the Behringer-Crawford Museum throughout the year.
Returning this year is Art From the Heart, a special live auction of a painting donated by Dr. Wolfgang Ritschel. Dr. Ritschel, a founding participant of freshART who passed away February 2010, took steps to continue his legacy and support of BCM through providing the museum with paintings for auction.
Don't miss this opportunity to support local artists and the Behringer-Crawford Museum, the place to gather for our local heritage, art, music and culture. For more information on this or any other museum activity, contact the museum at (859) 491-4003 or info@bcmuseum.org
