Covington Projects Rank Highest on Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee Wish List!

The Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee, comprised of 76 local business, community and political leaders from eight counties in our region, unveiled their nine-item wish list last month.

On the list are projects of great significance to Covington:

A $35 million expansion of the Northern Kentucky Convention Center made the top of the list once again. The facility has outgrown itself and has exceeded expectations since 2005 and must turn away conventions.

Another longtime regional priority is an urban campus for Gateway Community & Technical College. The first phase of the project is completed with Gateway having purchased and renovated the former Two Rivers Middle School on Scott Boulevard. Gateway is seeking $52.8 million for the second phase, which includes acquiring buildings nearby for renovation and building new ones to create an urban campus, encompassing several city blocks, which would revitalize the entire urban core.

Also on the list is the replacement of the Brent Spence Bridge. This project has been identified by the Chambers of Commerce in both Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati as a top regional priority.

Other projects on the list that also benefit Covington, are the Northern Kentucky Water District's request for $69 million to replace 175 miles of aging water lines in the Ohio riverfront region. Some of the lines are over 100 years old. These aging pipes are prone to breaking, and cause low water flow and discoloration. NKWD plans to match whatever funds the state provides.

The Licking River Greenway project was also included on the list this year. Officials are seeking $12.9 million to mitigate riverbank erosion by building a pedestrian path along the Ohio River and hiking and walking trails along the Licking River.

The Northern Kentucky Consensus Committee was created in 1989 at the request of our region's state lawmakers, who wanted Northern Kentucky to present a united voice and list of priorities to Frankfort. The Committee receives applications for projects every two years and selects their priorities based on need and impact. This year's list is scaled down, recognizing the challenging budgetary times the state and federal government is facing.

NEW BOARDED-UP BUILDING ORDINANCE

On June 29, 2011, the City of Covington Board of Commissioners amended §92.06 of the Nuisance Code to require boarded openings to be painted on buildings that are deemed dangerous due to blight and/or neglect. Pursuant to this ordinance change the Code Enforcement Department is currently attempting to notify owners of affected properties.

If openings are not repaired with appropriate windows or doors within 30 days of notification, the boards must be painted a color that is consistent with the color of the structure, or painted black, and must be cut to fit the opening.

Non-compliance with this provision of the Nuisance Code can result in a fine of $100.00 per day per violation. City staff hopes to work with property owners in a cooperative spirit regarding this issue as opposed to the imposition of fines.

Should you have any questions regarding this ordinance or would like to report property with unpainted boarded openings, please contact Code Enforcement at 292-2323.

 Community Housing Resource Group

Housing Authority of Covington (HAC) - Supporting Residents, Building Communities

The HAC's Resident Services Department works with over 25 local agencies to coordinate support services for current and former Jacob Price residents involved in the HOPE VI / Jacob Price Revitalization project. Support services offered to eligible residents include employment readiness and job training; early childhood and youth development; health education and assessments; life skills training on budgeting, homeownership and good credit; and case management supports. To date, more than 80 eligible public housing residents are participating in the HOPE VI process, and many have set goals toward greater financial independence and self-sufficiency. We want to thank all of our community partners for their support of the HOPE VI project and we look forward to working with each and every one over the next several years.

In addition to the HOPE VI project, the Resident Services Department sponsors many programs and events for all residents of public housing. Most recently, a Father's Day Celebration was held in City Heights on June 17, 2011, from 5:00-8:00 pm. Over 100 residents attended the event, which included music from a local radio personality and DJ, food and refreshments, face painting for the kids, health screenings for blood pressure and glucose levels, and many information booths sponsored by Covington Independent Schools, the Northern Kentucky Health Department, Northern Kentucky University / NACU, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, City of Covington Recreation Department, City of Covington Police and Fire Departments, and the Kentucky Caregiver Program. We were also supported by the St. Augustine Parish Center / City Heights, Erlanger Baptist Church, the local Chapter of the NAACP, UK Cooperative Extension Service, and the Office of the Kenton County Attorney IV-D Program for local child support enforcement.

For more information on these and other Housing Authority resident initiatives, contact the Resident Services Department at 292-2591 or cbradburn@hacov.org.

The students are those who, for a variety of reasons, were unable to earn sufficient credits in high school to receive their diplomas. At Covington Adult High School students study a minimum of 20 hours per week often before and after their part and full time jobs. They work one-on-one with teachers, as needed, and study independently on up to two courses at a time. The school works closely with Holmes guidance counselors to ensure that students are working on the necessary courses. The students must meet the high academic standards required by the state of Kentucky and Holmes High School. Some students earn enough credit and develop the skills to re-enroll at Holmes and graduate in the annual commencement. For information about Covington Adult High School call 859 292-5864.

AOP 2011

7th Annual Art Off Pike, Street Arts Festival, will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This one-day-a-year event attracts between 2,000-3,000 Art-loving visitors from the Greater Cincinnati region to Covington. Save the Date!

CALLL IS NOW OPEN FOR ARTIST BOOTHS!! This year, Art Off Pike has contracted with ZAPPlication, a free online resource for Artists. The website is a popular resource that provides Artists with a place to view income and exhibition opportunities.

Now in its Seventh year, the Art Off Pike Annual Street Arts Festival is Covington's oldest public Arts event and is bringing together a wide variety of artists whose works will be on display and for sale amongst an urban setting in the heart of Covington's downtown. As people discover the artwork presented by the artist booths lining the streets, children are invited to take part in 'Picasso's Playground', a kids cornucopia of art activities hosted by local Arts non-profit organizations. Musicians will be playing throughout the day at four separate stations and food vendors will offer their tasty treats. Don't miss this event!

If you would like more information on how to be involved, please email nbowers@covingtonky.gov or call 859-292-2322.

Pippin graphicCarnegie Theatre Series Presents: PIPPIN

Book by Roger O Hirson | Music & Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Weekends August 19 - September 3, 2011

War, politics, women; nothing seems to bring fulfillment for young Prince Pippin. As he searches for his "corner of the sky," a fantastical band of players guides Pippin on a tortuous journey to a spectacular and deadly finale. Bursting with energetic Fosse choreography and hip tunes by three-time Oscar-winning composer Stephen Schwartz (WICKED, GODSPELL), PIPPIN is a fun, sexy and dangerous fairy tale of self-discovery.

Celebrated director and NKU theatre chief Ken Jones leads the region's top young talent from the award-winning musical theatre programs at NKU, CCM and Wright State University.

Tickets may be purchased through The Carnegie Box Office at 859.957.1940, open Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5:00pm, or online at www.thecarnegie.com.
