 Swan Day logo

What is SWAN Day/Support Women Artists Now Day?

SWAN Day is a new international holiday that celebrates women artists.  It is an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of March (Women's History Month) and the surrounding weeks.

By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day helps people imagine what the world might be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives.

People celebrate this new holiday by participating in SWAN Day events and by making donations to their favorite women artists. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities around the world to find new ways to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning.

There have been over 500 SWAN Day events in 14 countries in the first three years of SWAN Day.

When is SWAN Day?

The official date of the Fourth International SWAN Day is Saturday, March 26, 2011.

What is Covington doing to celebrate SWAN Day?

Covington will be hosting a celebration on March 26th from 3-6pm at the Artisans Enterprise Center 25 W. 7th St. This celebration will include the following:

ˇ           A silent auction of art created only by local women artists

ˇ           A book sale of books published by local women writers

ˇ           A CD sale of music produced/recorder by local women musicians

ˇ           Live music (several acts, TBD)

ˇ           Food and wine

Biotech jobs booming

Excerpted from Cincinnati.com article

Northern Kentucky's emerging biotech industry also is expanding.

"There's definitely a growing demand for people," said Margaret vanGilse, vice president of development at bioLogic Corp., the Covington company that helps biotech startups with laboratory space and commercializing their developments.

Eight biotech companies operate out of bioLogic's two-story building, a former beer hall on Russell Street. Best known is Bexion Pharmaceuticals, which is bringing to market a new non-toxic cancer treatment licensed from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Another is Surgical Energetics LLC, which is developing technology for connecting tissues and prosthetic devices.

Since bioLogic started in 2007, employment among companies using its space has doubled to about 15, and Bexion expects to hire seven people alone this year as it begins testing its cancer compound on humans. VanGilse said bioLogic, which also has operations in Australia, Shanghai and Colorado, is discussing the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in Covington to help its companies produce their products.

Blinkers Tavern to open at former Chalk in Covington

Blinkers Tavern, a new restaurant and lounge opening in the former Chalk Food + Wine space in Covington, is scheduled to open March 17, just in time for St. Patrick's Day.

Sandy Meyer, formerly of Havana Martini Club, and Gary Ginn, who was most recently with the Reserve Piano Bar, created a casual tavern fare menu. House features include steaks, pastas, ribs, burgers, seafood and fried chicken, inspired by Chef Jon Spencer, most recently with Greyhound Tavern.

The restaurant and lounge is named after the leather covers placed on race horses eyes to keep them focused on the track ahead. In addition to dining space, Blinkers offers a bar, lounge and two outdoor patios.

Blinkers Tavern is located at 318 Greenup St.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

The already prolific Portugese-born artist, Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils, has trotted the globe earning a top spot in the booming New Brow art movement.  Vhils' art has been described as poetic, complex, and ambitious by some of the world's most respected art critics.  He has graced the prestigious walls of Lazaride gallery, worked next to Banksy at the Cans Festival, and participated in the Outsider's show in NYC.  Vhils' iconic style and astonishing drive makes him a key component in this movement of art we are currently experiencing.

PHASE 1  Studio Project
Vhils will take up residence at the BLDG from April 2nd - April 19th. He will create a catalogue of low edition hand-embellished prints using non-traditional screen printing techniques and other methods. The BLDG will host an informal process viewing to the public. The BLDG will also host a reception to view all work created while at the studio.

PHASE 2  Public Mural Project
During his residency at the BLDG Vhils will create a large scale mural on a designated building. The BLDG will direct and produce a mini-documentary with the help of Neltner creative and other local outlets.  The video will also showcase the area as being a noteworthy destination for the arts to worldwide audience.

The BLDG (The Building) at 30 West Pike Street, Covington, Kentucky, 41011 is a place, a process, a collaboration, creating and exhibiting diverse, provocative, art that challenges patrons to thought and introspection. It is our mission to deliver an unexpected venue to world renowned artists and to continue the development of the Southern/Midwestern art scene.

For more information about the BLDG, visit BLDGRfuge.com or contact the studio at 859-491-4228.

DPI logoUpdate on Kentucky Transportation Projects:

Brent Spence Bridge:  City staff met with representatives from the FHWA to discuss our concerns and begin discussions on how we need to move forward to ensure our concerns are addressed.

MLK Blvd. (12th Street):  Project is moving forward on schedule.  We are starting to research street name options.  Signs can be hung from traffic signal mast arms for signalized intersections and we can install decorative posts for signs at unsignalized intersections.

Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Projects:

Traffic signal equipment upgrades are planned for the signals along the 4th and 5th Street corridors.  Each approach to these signals is currently allocated a set amount of time.  The upgrades will allow the signals to function based on demand.  Contracts are in place to do this work now as weather permits.

-          Pike at Main Reconstruction:  The concept of reconstructing the intersection of Pike and Main Street has been approved for CMAQ funding.  The money has not been allocated from the state to begin final design, right of way acquisition, or utility relocation.  Once the project is funded, the intersection will be improved to allow a free-flow right turn from Main to Pike and the signal will be removed.  There will likely be an opportunity for green space and a new gateway into Mainstrasse.

-          4th Street Widening West of Philadelphia:  This concept has also been approved for CMAQ funding, but the money has not been allocated from the state to begin final design, right of way acquisition, or utility relocation.  Once the project is funded, 4th Street will be widened to accommodate 3 dedicated lanes West of Philadelphia.  One lane will lead to I-75 NB, one lane will lead to I-75 SB, and one lane that will continue through to Crescent.

KY 16:  Construction contract awarded to L-M Asphalt for $9.2 million.  Should start around April 1, 2011.  KY 16 between Hands Pike and Old Taylor Mill Road will be reconstructed to a five lane roadway that will include 2 through lanes in each direction and a center lane for two-way left turns.

Hands Pike:  Advertisement for consultant services for design of section from KY 17 to Firehouse should be out this week.  Estimated 2 years to design, 2 years to acquire right of way, and construction in 2016.

15th Street Bridge: Money has been included in the state's 6 year road plan to replace the 15th Street Bridge with a bridge that can handle vehicular loads.  Because of current railroad clearance requirements, the new bridge would have to be several feet higher than the existing bridge.  This would likely create significant impacts to the homes on either side of the bridge and may require some parcels to be purchased by the state.  The City has recommended that the state proceed with preliminary design including detailed surveying.  This will allow for the project impacts to be shown more clearly.  Once we are clear on what the impacts will be, the information can be presented to the neighborhood and to the City Commission to see whether the impacts are worth the benefit.  If it is decided that a vehicular bridge is not practical or wanted, we can ask KYTC and the federal government whether it would be possible to replace the vehicular bridge with a pedestrian/bicycle bridge using the money that has already been set aside in the budget.  A Transportation Enhancement application has also been submitted to the state for consideration.  Green infrastructure, lighting, and aesthetic improvements would be added to the existing bridge if this project was selected.

Madison Avenue Streetscape:  KYTC considering picking up the $90,000 in design fees that FHWA has determined needs to be reimbursed.  City would still owe $15,000.

11th Street Bridge:  State has determined this bridge has become structurally deficient and needs to be replaced.  Federal money is currently set up in the Transportation Bill for design to get started in October this year.  The District has requested advanced funding.  If request is approved, design may be able to start this year.  Construction is tentatively scheduled for 2016.

New Swap Loader System - Replaces 2 Trucks with 1

Swap LoaderThe Division of Fleet Management has purchased the new 2011 Freightliner M2-106V truck so that it will be able to change from one configuration to another in a matter of minutes dependent upon the assignment. This truck will be configured to be utilized as an asphalt heater (pot hole patcher) and snow removal truck.  The new dump bed and asphalt heater will be of hook style and shall have the capability of mounting and dismounting to the chassis via a system known as a Swap loader.  The Swap loader system is able to hoist and secure flat beds, dump beds and asphalt boxes to the chassis. The Right of Way Division currently utilizes two separate trucks for asphalt heating (pot hole patching) and snow removal operations.  Utilizing the swap loader system allows the city to replace two trucks with one. This equipment will be utilized to replace PW113, a 1995 F800 snow/salt truck.  The truck is currently being upfitted by K.E. Rose Co.  and is scheduled to be in service late March or early April.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to begin

'Revive the Drive - NKY'

Revive the Drive

Rehabilitation projects on four interstate routes will require travelers to be alert, prepared

COVINGTON, Ky. - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is about to begin "Revive the Drive - NKY" carrying out pavement rehabilitation projects on Interstates 71, 75, 275, and 471. Travelers in the area - local as well as out-of-state - will need to be alert and prepared for the rest of 2011.

The projects include replacing or repairing old pavement in multiple locations, a ramp widening in Campbell County, and repainting nearly two dozen bridges in Kenton County.

Collectively, the projects will result in markedly improved driving conditions, added safety, and the routine maintenance that is crucial for the interstate infrastructure of Northern Kentucky. To assist travelers throughout an unavoidably protracted season of road work, the cabinet (KYTC) and Department of Highways District 6, in Covington, are launching an awareness campaign, "Revive the Drive - NKY."

"While this Northern Kentucky interstate pavement project will benefit motorists and improve roadway pavement conditions, traffic congestion and backups will unfortunately occur," said Rob Hans, chief district engineer of the Covington District. "We have been getting the word out to prepare local commuters and travelers so that they can plan accordingly."

Several projects were recently awarded:

ˇ              Repair of concrete pavement on I-275 from KY 9 (AA Highway) in Campbell County to US 25 (Dixie Highway) in Kenton County.  As part of this project, the I-275 EB Exit ramp to KY 9 in Wilder will be widened.  There will be two lanes for traffic heading to NB KY 9 and two lanes for traffic heading to SB KY 9.  The SB KY 9 will also be restriped to allow continuous flow of traffic from the ramp. The improvement will help alleviate exit traffic backing up on I-275. The project also includes adding median cable barriers on I-275. Cost of project: $15 million. John R. Jurgensen Company and Subsidiary, of Cincinnati, is the contractor. Expected completion: Dec. 1, 2011.  Thursday, March 24, 2011, traffic impacts will begin.

ˇ              Repair and replacement of faulty and settling sections of concrete pavement on I-75/I-71 NB and SB from the Rivard Drive underpass, which is north of Dixie Highway in Fort Mitchell, to the Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River. Work will include joint repair work on several bridges. Cost of project: $14.2 million.  John R. Jurgensen Company and Subsidiary, of Cincinnati, is the contractor.  Expected completion: Dec. 1, 2011.  Monday, April 4, 2011, traffic impacts will begin.

ˇ              Painting of all I-275 steel bridges in Kenton County. Eighteen bridges in all, including Dr. Poweleit Licking River Bridge, KY 16, KY 17, KY 1303, US 25, CNO and TP Railroad Bridge, Crescent Springs Road and I-75/I-275 interchange bridges. All will be blast-cleaned of old paint and triple-coated. Cost of project: $15.5 million. ATSALIS Brothers Painting Co., of Clinton Township, Mich., is the contractor. Expected completion: Nov. 15, 2012.  Monday, April 4, 2011, minimal traffic impacts will begin.

ˇ              Asphalt resurfacing of I-75 in Boone County from Crittenden (Exit 166) north to Richwood Road (Exit 176) and SB from Turfway Road (Exit 182) to just north of Crittenden (Exit 166). Cost of project: $6.2 million. Bluegrass Paving Inc., of Florence, is the contractor.  Expected completion: Sept. 30, 2011.  Currently, beginning date of this project has not been determined.

Projects already in progress:

ˇ              $35.8 million asphalt overlay on NB and SB I-71 in Boone and Gallatin counties. The 18-mile project area extends from the I-71/I-75 interchange to the vicinity of Sparta Exit 57 (77.7 - 59.7 mile marker). The project is addressing base failures (potholes and ruts), repairing three slide areas and installing guardrail at various locations.  Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc., of Covington, is the prime contractor. Message boards are in place to warn motorists of the work zone and lane closures. Speed limit reduced to 55 mph. Expected completion: Late fall 2011. Work already in progress.  Crews will be working during weekdays only.  No weekend work will take place.

ˇ              $2.9 million concrete pavement repair on WB I-275 in Boone County.  Sections of pavement are being replaced between the Kenton County line/Turfway Road underpass and the airport interchange (Exit 4). Message boards are in place to warn motorists of the work zone and lane closures. Speed limit reduced to 55 mph; double fine zone enforced when workers are present and signs are posted. W. L. Harper Co., Hebron, is the prime contractor. Expected completion: June 15, 2011. Work already in progress.  Only night time work will be done on this section.  Crews will typically be working from 7 pm until 5 am during the week with some weekend work also occurring.

Total of projects complete and projects in progress is $91 million.

Projects coming soon:

ˇ              Concrete pavement repairs on I-275 in Campbell County from KY 9 to the Ohio River - Work scheduled to begin summer 2011.

ˇ              I-471 concrete pavement repairs - Currently scheduled for 2012.

Projects completed:

ˇ              I-275 median cable barriers in Boone County, totaling 12.1 miles - $1.3 million.

Times and locations of construction activity will vary. Disruption of traffic flow is unavoidable. There are no "off hours" when it comes to road construction.

Most work will take place on nights and weekends to avoid peak traffic hours, but there will still be lane closures.  "We are looking at every option for coordination of these projects to do the least amount of disruption to the traveling public," Hans said.

To avoid interstate construction, motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.  Motorists who must travel the interstates should be prepared for long delays.

Local commuters should consider carpooling or public transit.  Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) will use its network of park-and-ride lots throughout Northern Kentucky to provide bus service to downtown Cincinnati. One full bus takes 40 cars off the road - a major help during construction periods. To find out more about TANK services go to www.tankbus.org.

There will be several ways to get updated project information.

KYTC District 6 project info will be available on http://transportation.ky.gov/nkyinterstates.

District 6 and Insight Communications are working together.  Updated "Revive the Drive - NKY" information along with the weather reports will be provided daily on cn|2.

"Like" us on the KYTC District 6 Facebook page and get project information at https://www.facebook.com/KYTC.District6.

Another great feature will be provided on 511.ky.gov.  You can personalize 511 with your travel information.  You can logon to the site before you leave to see how the "Revive the Drive - NKY" interstate projects affect your commute.  That way you will know before you go and can plan accordingly.

Roebling Bridge connects.  In addition to a variety of booths that will feature local restaurants, artists and vendors, there will be activities for all ages to enjoy.  Entertainment will include karaoke and several bands.  Historians and the curious can take guided tours of the bridge, the Roebling floodwall murals and the statues along Riverside Drive.  The celebration would not be complete without fireworks to light up the sky framed by the silhouette of the bridge at the conclusion of the day.  The event is free and open to the public.

Museum's Newest Exhibit is a Real Hit!

Experience Behringer-Crawford Museum's newest exhibit, In a League of Our Own: Play Ball! Knothole Baseball in Northern Kentucky March 18, 2011 - June 5, 2011.   Explore the important history and impact that knothole baseball has had on the residents of Northern Kentucky for the past 75 years and in particular, its legacy in shaping our area's youth into leaders.

Started in Greater Cincinnati in 1932, the region's knothole leagues created a venue for our community's young people to develop their athletic abilities, good sportsmanship and other life skills many former players credit to their time on and off the baseball diamond.

The history of the four districts in Northern Kentucky, interviews with former and current players and pictorial displays of former knothole parks will engage you.  Community events such as reunion days and special luncheons and presentations will excite you.  The exhibit opens March 19, 2011 and will run through June 5, 2011 with designated Saturdays dedicated to different districts and teams for gathering and sharing experiences.  This exhibit is sponsored in part by Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, the Powell Crosley, Jr. Kid Glove Foundation and the Cincinnati Reds Community Fund, the exhibit will certainly entice you, perhaps even to Play Ball!

Each Saturday during the exhibit, current Knothole players are invited to see the exhibit free of charge and enjoy a special luncheon with past coaches and players.
