Thomas Edison Elementary Renovations Ready to Begin
New Apartment Development in Covington
AU Associates, from Lexington, will soon begin converting the school building on Scott Boulevard into 26 apartment units in Covington's Helentown neighborhood.
Excerpt from nky.com article~
The new apartment complex will retain much of the historic character of the school built in the late 1930s, Klare said. "It is going to still look like a school," Klare said. "It will still have the art deco characteristics."
Historic tax credits will contribute $800,000 for the project and will require the developer to adhere to federal preservation standards, Klare said. The gymnasium stage will remain and can serve as a community meeting space and theater, he said. AU Associates will consider building a playground on part of the parking lot, he said.

Graffiti
Even though winter has arrived, graffiti "artists" continue to be active city-wide by committing acts of criminal mischief. Although all vandalism is senseless and offensive, the placement of graffiti on public and private structures has a very negative impact on our community. Unabated graffiti can result in lower property values, an increase in crime, expensive removal costs, and lowered quality of life.
Code Enforcement, along with other City departments, spends considerable time (and tax dollars unfortunately) combating graffiti in our city. Please report graffiti when detected to the Code Enforcement Department at 292-2323. The City's goal is to ensure that graffiti is covered in the timeliest manner in order to have the most minimal impact on the community.

What is SWAN Day/Support Women Artists Now Day?
SWAN Day is a new international holiday that celebrates women artists. It is an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of March (Women's History Month) and the surrounding weeks.
By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day helps people imagine what the world might be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives.
People celebrate this new holiday by participating in SWAN Day events and by making donations to their favorite women artists. The long term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities around the world to find new ways to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning.
There have been over 500 SWAN Day events in 14 countries in the first three years of SWAN Day.

D.M. insite and Moyo becoming Kalio
Merger to double size of Covington company
From nky.com
Larry Kavanagh developed his first e-commerce software solution out of his basement in 1999. He has just announced the merger of his Covington company, called D.M.insite, with California-based Moyo Group, a move that will help his company double in size and ability.
Kavanagh expects to report $10 million in revenue by year-end and to see quick staff and sales growth in years to come. He'll also change the company's name to Kalio Inc.
Kavanagh provides more than 100 online retailers a platform to sell and market goods online. His clients range in size from $2 million to $50 million in annual online sales. They include international retailers such as Republic of Tea, Swedish shoemaker Tretorn, gardening supplier Springhill Nursery, saddle-maker Dover Saddlery and Donna Salyers' Fabulous Furs of Covington. BJ Novelty to grow significantly in Latonia
Excerpted from nky.com article
Covington-based B.J. Novelty has grown significantly over the past decade and in the next few months will move from Main Street, where it has been since the 1950s, to the vacated former Johnny's Toys building the company has purchased in Latonia. B.J. Novelty provides and manages amusement games and jukeboxes at various establishments. This includes pool tables, dart boards, arcade games and pinball.
The old Johnny's Toys building in Covington will quadruple B.J. Novelty's space. The company has operated out of a non-descript building on Main Street and four other buildings scattered in Covington that serve as warehouses and repair shops. All of the company's operations will move into the 40,000-square-foot storage space Johnny's Toys once used. In early 2010, B.J. Novelty and several other companies around the country merged to form Entertainment Experts, which manages game machines in 22 states. B.J. Novelty now serves as the Midwest hub of Entertainment Experts.
The number of accounts for their business has grown seven-fold in the past 14 years, and the number of employees has gone from 10 to 34 in that span. They have machines in 2,000 different businesses throughout Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. In recent years, they've picked up corporate accounts to put machines at truck stops and chains, such as Buffalo Wild Wings.
Owners Jeff and Kama Reed hope to lease the 50,000-square-foot former toy store's retail space to another company. The Totter's Otterville educational entertainment center in Johnny's Toys will remain open.

Shoveling Snow? Don't put it in the street!
When shoveling snow, please do not shovel it or blow it into the streets. Our city crews are working hard to get the streets clear and safe for travel, and it also helps those who must park on the streets to not have the parking lanes piled with snow. In addition, it is a violation of City Ordinance to do so.
Please shovel your snow into the curb strip or other area of your property.

Covington Fire Chief serving with Air Force
Greetings from Oman!
Chief Mark Young recently sent an update on his deployment to Oman. All is well at the base and Chief Young is surviving the winter. Daily temperatures are 80 in the daytime and 50 at night - which as he said (jokingly!) are similar to here in Covington. Dealing with the blowing sand, living and working in tents and the high security measures are difficult. We wish Chief Young well and look forward to his safe return to Covington.
The Covington Firefighters IAFF Local 38 received the "Local of the Year" award from MDA for leading collections among local Fire Departments. Congratulations to Lieutenant Larry "LC" Cappel, the Local 38 MDA Committee and all the men and women of the Covington Fire Department who are the "boots on the ground" working on this project. A very special THANK YOU to all the members of the Covington community who give from the heart and make this possible each year!!

Come One! Come All!
Vintage Baseball Players Wanted!
If you love the game of baseball, this might be your chance to play the game as it was intended. Gentlemen who honor sportsmanship, camaraderie and a love of the game are invited to join in the formation of a new team (or possibly teams) here in Northern Kentucky.
The rules date from the 1860's, we pitch underhand, catch barehanded, use real wood bats, and wear 1800's uniforms. We allow no cursing, swearing, or ill tempers. We are forming a team in Ludlow and there is an interest in developing at least one more team in Covington. We will play against other vintage teams in this area, including the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, the 1869 Cincinnati Buckeyes, and teams from other cities. The season starts around May and usually runs through fall. The Ludlow team is hoping to form as the Ludlow White Sox in conjunction with the Israel Ludlow Historical Society and its planned museum. This Ludlow team of local players will be potentially battling the Cincinnati Red Stockings at the Fireworks Festival this coming June.
The age to participate is 18 to whenever you feel you can no longer compete. If you love history, and love the game, this is baseball at its finest. Send an email or call Stonewall (that's Doug Rowe, he plays for the Cincinnati Red Stockings) at d.rowe@fuse.net or 859-801-3084 (9am-9pm) for information. A meeting will be held soon for those interested. The date and time will be posted on www.historicludlow.org as well as the Facebook page for the Ludlow Historical Society.

Covington - Featured in Tri-Ed's February Newsletter
Excerpt below~
Northern Kentucky's largest city, Covington's growth is epitomized by the 22-story Ascent at Roebling's Bridge. The revitalized downtown boasts an arts district, with a variety of artists' studios and galleries. On Madison Avenue and Pike Street, the city created the Covington Arts and Technology Zone (CATZ). A growing entertainment district along the redeveloped riverfront area complements the older MainStrasse section, which dates back to the mid-1800s. The scenic 704-acre Devou Park, with its beautiful view of Cincinnati's skyline, is just one of Covington's 20 city parks.
Covington is also home to the Carnegie Arts Center and Behringer-Crawford Museum, two of the city's cultural gems. The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, which is on the National Historic Register, is a stunning example of the city's architecture. Another example of the city's rich architectural heritage is the Licking Riverside National Register District, an intact grouping of residential buildings - including large mansions, row houses, double houses and apartment buildings ranging from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. Located at the juncture of the Licking and Ohio rivers, the Licking Riverside neighborhood is the oldest residential section of the City and will be a critical link in the ambitious Licking River Greenway and Trails project.

Behringer Crawford Museum
THE BEHRINGER-CRAWFORD MUSEUM'STWO-HEADED CALF COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
SCHOOLS, GROUPS INVITED TO NOMINATE
The Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park is inviting school and other groups to apply for the museum's first annual Two-Headed Calf Community Service Award for service to learning.
The award is meant to celebrate extraordinary teaching and learning at the primary or secondary school level, especially in disciplines dear to the Behringer-Crawford, such as history, heritage, art, music and/or archeology. The honoree or honorees who receive this award not only demonstrate academic excellence, but embody innovative, energetic approaches to teaching and learning.
Nominees for this award can be an individual (a student, a parent, a teacher, a principal, an administrator, a volunteer), a school or even a school district. Indeed, an auxiliary group affiliated with education can be nominated (for example, a scout troop).
Interested applicants can contact BCM Executive Director Laurie Risch (lrisch@bcmuseum.org or 859-491-4003) for an application. Applications are due by Feb. 15. Applications can be submitted by mail, in person or by email.
About the award
The Behringer-Crawford Museum in Devou Park is serious about its mission as "a center for the collection, presentation, study and enjoyment of our natural, cultural, and visual and performing arts heritage" - and serious about its exhibits that capture Northern Kentucky's story.
But the museum has always had a good sense of fun, too. And perhaps nothing symbolizes that good humor more than the museum's taxidermic prize, the two-headed calf. So, in the spirit of both serious devotion to the mission of the museum and the BCM's reputation as a fun place to visit, we are preparing to present our first annual "Two-Headed Calf Community Service Awards."
Typically awards celebrate one exceptional achievement. The fastest runner wins the race. The most talented violinist is awarded the gold medallion. Behringer-Crawford Museum's Two-Headed Calf Awards recognize that very often true excellence rests with those who demonstrate achievement beyond a single contribution. Just as two heads are better than one, so, too, is the service of the people these awards honor.
The awards will be given at a banquet at the Northern Kentucky University ballroom on the evening of April 2. Reservations for the banquet can be made by contacting the museum at 859-491-4003 or by contacting the event chair, Leo Calderon at (859) 572-5821 or calderon@nku.edu.
