Date:  Thursday, January 27, 2011

Location:
Artisans Enterprise Center
City of Covington
25 West 7th Street
Covington, Kentucky  41011

Time:

6:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.

Who:

We invite all members of the community (Kenton and Campbell Counties) to attend.

The Licking River Greenway Brownfield Coalition is holding their first community engagement meeting in the City of Covington. This meeting will be to educate the public on the intent of the coalition and how their funds will be used to further the mission of the Licking River Greenway program. The Licking River Greenway Brownfield Coalition seeks to assist in the assessment of underutilized or unused properties for petroleum waste.

The intent is to assess these sites and then move forward with seeking funding to remove the waste so that the site will no longer blight the community. This program will be highly beneficial to all community members.

After the presentation, those in attendance will be asked to participate. Sites will be discussed, and public opinion is valued. We want to know the community members' thoughts, comments and questions.

The Hills logo

NKAPC has announced the results of their recently completed

Hillside Survey.

Key Findings

One-third of respondents "care deeply" about hillsides in Kenton County.

About one in ten respondents indicated that they didn't care at all about hillsides.

Of the 273 respondents who care at least somewhat about hillsides, most would prefer a mix of development and preservation; however one third indicated they would prefer full preservation.

Over one half of respondents indicated the community should place a high priority (answered 4 or 5 on a 5 point scale with 5 being "very high priority") on the preservation of hillsides.

Eighty percent of respondents agree/strongly agree with the statement, "Undeveloped hillsides add to the visual appeal of Kenton County."

Sixty-five percent of respondents agree/strongly agree with the statement "Preservation of hillsides is an appropriate use of our community's resources."

Over one-half of respondents indicated that they would be interested (4 or 5 on a 5 point scale where 5 is extremely interested) in decisions that Kenton County makes regarding hillsides.

Code Enforcement Department

Graffiti

Even though winter has arrived, graffiti "artists" continue to be active city-wide by committing acts of criminal mischief.  Although all vandalism is senseless and offensive, the placement of graffiti on public and private structures has a very negative impact on our community.   Unabated graffiti can result in lower property values, an increase in crime, expensive removal costs, and lowered quality of life.

Code Enforcement, along with other City departments, spends considerable time (and tax dollars unfortunately) combating graffiti in our city.   Please report graffiti when detected to the Code Enforcement Department at 292-2323.  The City's goal is to ensure that graffiti is covered in the timeliest manner in order to have the most minimal impact on the community.

Energy Savings Initiatives Yielding Positive Results

The savings numbers for City Garages and City Hall have been tracked to develop measurable data for the improvements completed under the ESG energy savings performance contract, as well as in-house improvements.

The Department of Public Improvements (DPI) Annex Garage was insulated with scrap insulation board purchased from a local business in Latonia.  This garage serves as a staging area for snow plows and requires heating.  Total material costs were minimal and the savings will be significant - in one month alone the savings was approximately 41% over last year's utility bill.

Energy consumption is down at all 3 city garages, experiencing a savings of approximately 14-15% each.

City Hall utilities are down about $1155.00 this season compared to last, and the demand charge is down $234.00 which should be a sustained monthly reduction.

These energy savings projects are exciting, and our staff continues to come up with creative strategies to reduce overall energy utilization.

Shoveling Snow?  Don't put it in the street!

When shoveling snow, please do not shovel it or blow it into the streets.  Our city crews are working hard to get the streets clear and safe for travel, and it also helps those who must park on the streets to not have the parking lanes piled with snow.  In addition, it is a violation of City Ordinance to do so.

Please shovel your snow into the curb strip or other area of your property.  Questions?  Call 292-2292.

Fire Department

Fire Dept logoCovington Fire Chief serving with Air Force

From nky.com

Covington's fire chief will spend the first half of the year fighting fires in Oman, city officials said.

The Air Force Reserve deployed Fire Chief Mark Young on Dec. 26 to Oman on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, said City Manager Larry Klein.

He's an assistant fire chief for the Air Force Reserve based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Klein said. He will be in Oman until May, Klein said.

"We are proud of him like any of the employees that not only serve the citizens of Covington but serve our security interests as well," Klein said. "We're glad our employees think of serving our nation."

Young has been Covington's fire chief in Dayton since 2008. He had served two previous tours of duty before becoming chief in 2008. The city won't have to pay his salary while he is serving but will continue his benefits, Klein said. Assistant Chief Chuck Norris will act as fire chief in Young's absence.

"We hope that he returns safely back to us without any incidents," Norris said. "The fire department continues to move forward. We have experience at all levels ready to take on the challenges."

Norris said the Covington Fire Department also has another firefighter, Aaron Bolyard, deployed by the military in the Middle East. Bolyard was called up by the Army in March 2010 to serve in the Afghanistan.

Citizens Police Academy
New Session Beginning in February

Our Citizen's Police Academy is designed to give participants a "behind the scenes" look at the Covington Police Department. It is our belief that when the community is more informed and has a better understanding of the organization, a more productive partnership will result between police and citizens.

The Citizen's Police Academy is an eight week course in a friendly atmosphere that will give participants an opportunity to see what officers do on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to ask questions and express concerns about neighborhood issues. And since the instructors are the same officers that will be working to address those concerns, this academy becomes an educational process for us, too.

Participants will be given the opportunity to learn about every bureau in the police department and can even ride along with an officer on patrol. Students will receive training in areas such as:

  1. Patrol Operations
  2. Criminal Investigations
  3. Crime Suppression Unit / Drug Dealers
  4. Processing Crime Scenes
  5. Crimes Against Children / Domestic Abuse
  6. SWAT Demonstration
  7. Mounted Patrol Demonstration
  8. K9 Demonstration
  9. Firearms Training

Drug Funds buy new drug sniffing dog

From nky.com

The Covington Police Department got a new drug sniffing dog courtesy of money seized during drug arrests.

Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney Rob Sanders told The Kentucky Enquirer that his office put up the more than $7,000 necessary to buy Covington police a replacement for Kody, the drug sniffing dog that died last summer of an illness.

The Covington Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 1 gave the new dog, Coen Von Haupstadt Munde - called Coen - to the department on Saturday.

Coen works with handler Specialist Mark Richardson. Coen recently completed training and has started work for the department.

Sanders said his office has also used the funds, which cannot be used for salaries, to buy bullet-proof vests for officers and K-9s, language translators and other law enforcement equipment.

Defensive Items for Police Funded

The state Law Enforcement Protection Program recently awarded funds to help Northern Kentucky police departments purchase key equipment.  The Covington Police Department was awarded $22,374 to purchase rifles, tasers and ammunition through the program that provides financial help for certain defensive items essential in the course of their duties.

KYTC Road Project Updates

The KYTC District 6 Office wants to be sure that you are aware of the upcoming projects that will be happening on the four interstates in Northern Kentucky.   These needed improvements will greatly benefit our area, but the work will cause major congestion and delays.  Hopefully this info will help you plan for deliveries, commutes, emergency services, scheduling with employees and patrons.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Office is preparing to coordinate several pavement rehabilitation projects on Interstates 71, 75, 275, and 471 in Northern Kentucky.

"While the rehabilitations of our interstates will benefit motorists and improve roadway pavement conditions, the projects will cause congestion and back ups," said Rob Hans, District 6 chief engineer. "We are getting the word out now to prepare local commuters and travelers so that they can plan accordingly."

Other interstate repair projects also will affect motorists' routines.  Commuters should consider other options, such as carpooling or public transit.

Most work will take place nights and weekends to avoid peak traffic hours, but there will still be lane closures.  "We are looking at every option so we can coordinate these projects to do the least amount of disruption," Hans said.

Locally:

  • I-75 NB and SB will have pavement rehabilitation from the Brent Spence Bridge to Rivard Drive underpass, totaling 3 miles - date TBA.

Times and locations of projects will vary, with most beginning in spring 2011.  Disruption of traffic flow will be unavoidable.  There are no "off hours" when it comes to road construction.  To avoid interstate construction, motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.  Motorists who must travel the interstates should be prepared for long delays.

Living the Dream

By Diamond Daniels

How can you say

We are not

Living the dream?

A tall proud black man

With his hand

On the Bible

Repeating the words

"I do solemnly swear

that I will faithfully execute the Office of

President of the United States"

Pride in the heart

Of every American

He is not Black

He is not white

He is our President

Winner not by a little

But by a landslide

Many believe in the man with a new dream

Proving that I can be anything

That I want to be

Not held back by

The color of my skin

We are living the dream

If you don't believe me

Just turn on your TV

And see our President

Roebling Bridge connects.  In addition to a variety of booths that will feature local restaurants, artists and vendors, there will be activities for all ages to enjoy.  Entertainment will include karaoke and several bands.  Historians and the curious can take guided tours of the bridge, the Roebling floodwall murals and the statues along Riverside Drive.  The celebration would not be complete without fireworks to light up the sky framed by the silhouette of the bridge at the conclusion of the day.  The event is free and open to the public.

Covington Library to be Renoveated

In 1974, a new library opened in Covington at the corner of Fifth and Scott Streets. In theCovington Renovation years since it has opened, the library has welcomed millions of visitors, librarians have read thousands of stories to children and technology has changed libraries in ways that were unimaginable 36 years ago.

Since opening in 1974, not much has changed at the Covington

Renovationlibrary. But that is soon about to change. This spring, the Covington library will undergo a renovation and expansion. This will be a five-phase project that is expected to be completed by 2013.

Want to Learn a New Language?

The Carnegie Collecting Food Memories

In preparation for the fifth anniversary of The Carnegie's tastiest art exhibition, The Art of Food, The Carnegie is inviting Tri-state residents to be apart of the March 2011 exhibition by sharing their favorite food memories with them.

From dinner at grandma's house on Thanksgiving, to that one perfect meal on vacation, to Mom's mac-n-cheese, just about everyone can recall a food experience that has stayed with them over the years.

Food Memories"Last year we incorporated a food memory graffiti wall into our installation at The Art of Food and the response was overwhelming," said Sharon Butler, owner of theBonBonerie and Art of Food committee member."This year we really want to build on that and are hoping people will share their food memories (as well as photos and recipes) with us in advance so we can incorporate them into the overall exhibition."

Running March 11 - April 15 of 2011, The Art of Food is The Carnegie's annual gallery exhibition that brings together top artists and chefs from the region. Hosted in The Carnegie's six galleries, The Art of Food pairs food inspired works of art in a variety of mediums with edible artistic creations by some of the region's top chefs.

Individuals who would like to share their food memories can submit them (photos and recipes, optional) online at www.thecarnegie.com, or by emailing sboyer@thecarnegie.com, subject: Food Memories. Submissions will be shared on The Carnegie's website and will be incorporated into the 2011 Art of Food exhibition. One lucky entrant will be selected at random to receive a pair of tickets to the opening reception of The Art of Food exhibition (an $80 value) on March 11, 2011.
