Burning Ban in NKY  The Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet has issued a ban on open burning in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties starting May 1.  Northern Kentucky has been designated as a nonattainment area by the cabinet because the high density of emissions in these counties is contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer.  The open burning ban will be in effect through Sept. 30.

Roebling Point GraphicRoebling Point Planning Committee

The Roebling Point Planning Committee was formed as a result of a commitment from the City Commission to study and explore alternatives in the Roebling Point area following the adoption of the Historic Preservation Overlay (HP-O). The study area includes not only the expanded HP-O area, but immediately surrounding properties along 3rd and 4th street and Scott and Greenup Street. Portions of the Roebling Point area are also currently within the Renaissance Covington boundary and the boundaries of National Register Historic Districts, which qualifies properties for certain financial incentives. The Committee has been working since November on gathering information related to land use, design, transportation and public improvements in the study area.

Residential Knox Box Loaner Program

What is a Residential Knox Box?
A residential Knox Box is a high security steel key box, used for the storage of entry keys, which can be hung on an exterior door.  In case of an emergency, the fire department can open the Knox Box with a master key,  retrieve an entry key and gain access to the person in need.

What is the purpose of the program?
Often we are called to a home due to illness or injury and the occupant is unable to let us in.  This program allows us to quickly and nondestructively gain access to elderly, disabled, or incapacitated persons that are in need of Fire/EMS services.
knox1
What are the benefits?
·        Provides the Covington Fire Department rapid access without causing damage to the residence
·        Allows a medical information sheet to be stored in the Knox Box
·        Includes a home safety check
·        Enhances the Covington Fire Department's ability to protect the health and safety of our citizens.

knox2Who is eligible?
To be eligible for this program an applicant must:
·        Reside in Covington Kentucky
·        Live in a one or two-family residential building
·        Be age 55 or older and have a medical disability that inhibits mobility

This program is intended to fulfill a need that has been recognized within the Covington community, but would not have been possible without the help of Corporex and the Rotary Club of Covington. Thanks to a generous donation from these two organizations we are able to start our program with six Knox Boxes.

knox3If you are interested in the program, or if you would like to make a donation to assist the program, please contact the Covington Fire Department at 859-431-0464. Or Email Captain Brian Bamberger at bbamberger@covkyfd.org

Each year, Newsweek magazine picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced placement college-level courses and tests. Just over 1600 schools-only six percent of all the public schools in the U.S.-made the list.

Holmes High School is among the top 1,623 public schools named by Newsweek. Holmes is ranked No. 927. It is one of 16 Kentucky schools that made the list.

Sixth District Elementary School has a new principal
Bill Bradford, who served as the K-12 instructional support specialist for Fayette County Public Schools for the past year, is the new principal of Sixth District Elementary School in Covington.

Sixth District's School-Based Decision Making Council selected Mr. Bradford in early June. "It's extremely exciting," said Mr. Bradford. "I feel humble and appreciative and plan to roll up my sleeves and get down to work to build on the school's success and develop a long relationship with the school."

Mr. Bradford worked in Fayette County Public Schools for eight years as a teacher and a coach.  He replaces Tony Ross who left to retire after 21 years in the position.

An open house was held to welcome Mr. Bradford on June 8 in the school cafeteria located at E. 18th St. and Maryland Avenue, Covington.

Devou Park Bandshell
Covington, KY

Fun Fun Fun
August 7    7:30 pm
Nothing will put a smile on your face quicker than the frivolous pop music of the 1960's--without the protest and drug-themed tunes that are often used to define the decade.  Think Beach Boys, Petula Clark, Monkees, Supremes, Elvis, and many more.  Feel free to dress up, dance, and sing along.

Cirque Devou
September 4    7:30 pm
The KSO teams up with Circus Mojo for high-wire high-jinx.  The Devou bandshell transforms into a multi-ring circus with trapeze artists, acrobats, daring feats of skill, and yes those zany clowns.  Ringling Bros. verterans will appear to the traditional sounds of the circus, courtesy of the KSO.

Centennials Exhibit at BCM

Did you know one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America was a resident of Covington?

How did the rolling hills above Covington become one of the largest urban parks in Greater Cincinnati?

Did you realize that trolley travel helped establish the Northern Kentucky City of
Fort Mitchell?

Behringer-Crawford's newest exhibit "Centennials" celebrates 100 years of
history for the Boy Scouts of America, the City of Fort Mitchell and Covington's beautiful Devou Park.

KENTUCKY STATE PARKS - Legislative change provides new benefit!

One of the great things about living in Kentucky is that, no matter where you call home, you're never too far away from a state park.

Our Kentucky state parks system, which celebrated 85 years in 2009, has long been recognized as being among the best in the nation.

Several weeks ago, our state park campgrounds were recognized as some of the best in the country.  The organization ReserveAmerica, which manages reservations for our campgrounds and many others across the nation, put five of our state parks in its top 100, and in individual categories, many of our parks were ranked among the top 50 for such activities as canoeing, bird watching, fishing and being "kid friendly."

On July 14, our state parks will become even more accommodating for veterans who are permanently and totally disabled because of a service-related injury.  On that date, a new state law takes effect that will allow these men and women to stay up to three nights for free per year where lodging is available.

The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that as many as 4,000 veterans could qualify.  Those wanting to take part have to show proof of Kentucky residency and an official letter noting their disability.  Reservations can be set up to 10 days in advance and need to be made at the park of choice, rather than through the Department of Parks' online reservation system.  (There are also some limitations tied to availability and peak tourist times in the summer and the month of October.)
