Mark your calendars for River Sweep 2010! River sweep is a one-day shoreline cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and some of its tributaries. The sweep is scheduled for Saturday, June 19th, 2010, from 8:00 am until Noon (weather permitting). Volunteers from public organizations, civic groups, and the general public will collect debris from the banks of the river. In addition to cleaning the shoreline, the event will help increase public awareness regarding littering and illegal dumping along our waterways and foster greater public concern for finding solutions to this problem. After the event everyone gets a great lunch, a cool 2010 Ohio River t-shirt, and door prizes will also be awarded. Gloves and garbage bags will be supplied. Each participant must sign a waiver form and minors must have a waiver form signed by their parent or guardian. This is also a great opportunity for our young volunteers to earn their community service hours, and learn the importance of volunteering. We all can make a difference. If you have any questions regarding the Covington River Sweep, please feel free to contact John Coulter, Solid Waste Coordinator, at 292-2323.

The Covington Fire Department
Fireworks Safety Month June - July 4
Fireworks are an American tradition. They can provide hours of wholesome, family entertainment, but must be used by adults carefully and safely. To insure the safety of both the audience and those lighting the fireworks, we recommend that you obey the following fireworks safety measures during your fireworks display.
1. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT HANDLE FIREWORKS. NEVER LET CHILDREN HANDLE, PLAY WITH, OR LIGHT ANY FIREWORKS. ONLY ADULTS SHOULD HANDLE AND LIGHT THE FIREWORKS. The fireworks are great family fun, but they burn very hot and are intended to be handled only by adults.
2. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL WITH FIREWORKS. Please do not consume any alcohol while lighting or handling fireworks. Fireworks must be used only by individuals who act in a responsible manner and who are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you are impaired in any way when you use fireworks, you increase the possibilities of misuse and injury to yourself and others.
3. FOLLOW THE LAWS; USE COMMON SENSE Follow your local and state laws regarding the possession and use of fireworks, and use good common sense when using fireworks. Read all directions, cautions, labels, and warnings on each individual firework item to understand the product performance and hazards associated with it. 4. USE FIREWORKS ON A HARD SURFACE. Always light fireworks on a hard, flat, and level surface to insure the stability of the items. Grass is generally not suitable for any item intended to be used in an upright position. (If lighting fireworks on grass, lay down a flat wooden board for a shooting surface.) 5. USE IN A CLEAR, OPEN AREA. Always keep the audience (and particularly children) a safe distance away from the shooting site. Always light your fireworks in a clear open area away from buildings, vehicles, and shrubbery. A minimum clear radius of 30 feet for fountains and other ground based items and 100 yards for any aerial product is recommended. You should avoid lighting the fireworks in any area where there is dry grass or brush that could catch fire or near any flammable items. Never use fireworks indoors. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. 6. KEEP CLEAR OF THE FIREWORKS. Never put your head or any part of your body over the top of any fireworks product. Never look into a tube to check on the firework item. Never hold a lighted firework item in your hand. Keep as far from the firework item as possible when lighting. 7. USE CARE IN LIGHTING THE FIREWORKS. Always light fireworks products with punk, a Phantom Pyro Torch, a flare or an extended butane lighting device. This will enable you to keep as far from the firework item as possible. If needed, use a flashlight at night so the fuse can be easily seen; never use a lantern or other flame producing device near fireworks for illumination. Light the fireworks product and get away quickly. Respect the fireworks, because if used improperly, they can be dangerous. 8. ONE AT A TIME. Light only one firework item at a time. 9. DON'T USE MALFUNCTIONING OR "DUD" ITEMS. Never attempt to re light, alter, or fix any "dud" firework item. If a firework item fails to ignite, let it stand for at least five minutes, then immerse it in water. Dispose of the item properly. You can always return the item to your Phantom dealer for replacement. 10. HAVE WATER CLOSE BY. Have an accessible fire extinguisher, water supply, hose, or bucket of water nearby for emergencies. During any fireworks shoot, there should always be one individual assigned as the fireman, whose sole job is to be alert and at the ready with a water source. 11. WINDY CONDITIONS. Be cautious of lighting any fireworks during strong wind conditions. Fireworks should be lit with the prevailing wind blowing away from the spectators. If there is a significant wind shift during the time you are lighting the fireworks, rearrange the shooting site to accommodate the wind shift or stop shooting until the windy conditions subside. 12. USE CARE IN HANDLING FIREWORKS. Do not carry fireworks in your pocket or on your person. It is preferable to keep the products in a closed container before ignition. Always be careful in handling fireworks to prevent dropping them. Never smoke when handling fireworks. 13. NEVER USE THE FIREWORKS AS WEAPONS. Never aim, point, or throw any fireworks at another person or at any property. 14. STORAGE OF FIREWORKS. Always store fireworks in a cool, dry place and dispose of fireworks properly. 15. USE FIREWORKS OUTDOORS. Never use fireworks indoors; only use them outdoors under safe conditions. 16. PURCHASE FIREWORKS FROM RELIABLE DEALERS. Buy fireworks only from reliable, licensed fireworks dealers. Licensed and reliable dealers will only carry those products that meet standards set and enforced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Do not use illegal explosives; do not alter any firework device; do not make your own fireworks. 17. SAFETY GLASSES. Safety glasses are recommended for those individuals lighting the fireworks and those individuals in close proximity to the fireworks. 18. BE CAREFUL WITH ANIMALS. The noise and lights of fireworks often frighten some animals, so it is very important that you are careful with pets. You may want to consider moving the animals away or keeping them inside during your display. Please be considerate of your pets and animals when using fireworks. 19. DO NOT TRANSPORT FIREWORKS ON AIRPLANES. It is a violation of federal aviation law to transport any fireworks device on an airplane. Please respect this law and do not attempt to carry any fireworks onto an airplane or transport them in your luggage.
The Covington Fire Department wants you and your family to have a fun and enjoyable 4th of July experience, and if you plan on using fireworks please insure that all of these safety rules are followed.

Residential Knox Box Loaner Program
What is a Residential Knox Box? A residential Knox Box is a high security steel key box, used for the storage of entry keys, which can be hung on an exterior door. In case of an emergency, the fire department can open the Knox Box with a master key, retrieve an entry key and gain access to the person in need.
What is the purpose of the program? Often we are called to a home due to illness or injury and the occupant is unable to let us in. This program allows us to quickly and nondestructively gain access to elderly, disabled, or incapacitated persons that are in need of Fire/EMS services.
What are the benefits? · Provides the Covington Fire Department rapid access without causing damage to the residence · Allows a medical information sheet to be stored in the Knox Box · Includes a home safety check · Enhances the Covington Fire Department's ability to protect the health and safety of our citizens.
Who is eligible? To be eligible for this program an applicant must: · Reside in Covington Kentucky · Live in a one or two-family residential building · Be age 55 or older and have a medical disability that inhibits mobility
This program is intended to fulfill a need that has been recognized within the Covington community, but would not have been possible without the help of Corporex and the Rotary Club of Covington. Thanks to a generous donation from these two organizations we are able to start our program with six Knox Boxes.
If you are interested in the program, or if you would like to make a donation to assist the program, please contact the Covington Fire Department at 859-431-0464. Or Email Captain Brian Bamberger at bbamberger@covkyfd.org

Sheds And Garages: Lock 'Em Up
The Covington Police Department wants to remind residents to lock their sheds and garages. Officials say the best deterrent to keep thieves from stealing your property is a lock and key. Don't assume you are safe from these unwanted people just because you are at home.
Oftentimes, burglars watch and wait to see where you are and what you are doing. Sheds and garages are often left open and unattended as we do yard work or other outdoor activities. The thief is counting on us to become lax in our security.
To avoid losing valuables, remember to close and lock doors to your garage, shed and home. This is especially true if you are in the front yard and the storage area is in the back. It takes almost no time for a thief to come and go with your property.
Take the time to reacquaint yourself with your old neighbors and meet the new ones. Why not suggest a neighborhood watch to protect and watch out for one another's property? Let your neighbors know when a suspicious person has been spotted in your area. Neighbors working together for each other's well-being are the foundation for a happy community.
Make life difficult for a burglar, use locks and keys to protect your property. If you see a suspicious person or notice an unusual situation around your house or that of a neighbor, call 911. Community Relations Division 292-2257

Holmes Alumni inducted into Hall of Distinction
The Holmes Hall of Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Honorary Alumni honors distinguished graduates and friends to Covington schools in recognition of their achievements and contributions to society. It was founded to recognize the history of Holmes High School and its continuing impact on the community and the education of our students.
Here are this year's inductees into the Hall of Distinction. The induction takes place during Holmes High school's 142st commencement exercises. Charles Gillham, Class of 1938, studied painting with William Weissler, a student of well known artist Frank Duveneck. He worked as a commercial artist with Mott Studios in Cincinnati. After retirement to Florida, Mr. Gillham had gallery representation, won numerous awards, and was a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society. In 1993, he donated his original watercolor painting of Holmesdale, which hangs in the Holmes library. Richard Macke, Class of 1947, spent a distinguished 45 year career on the editorial sports staff at the Cincinnati Enquirer. He was a mentor, coach and teacher to hundreds of youth in Covington, instilling lessons and qualities - hard work, perseverance, teamwork and sportsmanship - on fields and courts across northern Kentucky. He was exceptional in his loyalty to his alma mater and to the Holmes Bulldogs. James Titus, Class of 1963, is an award-winning architect, author and lecturer whose projects include the airport, parks, churches, Nunn Hall and a 40,000 seat stadium in Kharkov for the 2012 European Soccer Olympics. He is the 2009 American Institute of Architects Mentor of the Year, a gold medal award for mentoring young architects in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Alan Rison, Class of 1969, is a medical doctor with a private practice in Northern Kentucky. As the Holmes team physician from 1979 to 1994, he provided free physicals and care to students unable to afford them. His advice to students: "Do not let people tell you what you can't do, believe in yourself. I always told myself it was 10% brilliance and 90% sweat."
Julie (Craven) Henry, Class of 1980, is the CEO and co-founder of Market First, Inc., ranked in 2002 by "Inc Magazine" as the 78th fastest growing private business in America. She attributes her company's growth to being honest, performing competently and concentrating on clients' best interests. She mentors young women to help them get a professional start in their business careers.

The 2010 Census Focus Shifts
The 2010 Census is shifting its focus to completing the Census by conducting door-to-door follow-up efforts to ensure the quality and accuracy of the Census. The Census Bureau goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure all residents, both citizens and noncitizens, are included in the Census. We are following-up with households who have not yet participated. Please open your door to census takers. Census takers are your neighbors - people hired from your community to make sure your area gets an accurate count. Answering their questions is easy, important and safe. Just take 10 minutes to fill the form out and mail it back. Your responses are safe and confidential, guaranteed by Title 13 and the Patriot Act. By law, no other government agency, law enforcement agency, national security agency, court, or anyone else can access your responses -- not anyone for any reason. The 2010 Census is the shortest in history - just 10 basic questions that only takes about 10 minutes to answer asking about topics such as name, age, race, Hispanic origin and home ownership. The Census is mandatory - the law requires everyone to respond. It is a civic responsibility. The 2010 Census has been streamlined - The "long form," which covered dozens of additional topics, has been converted to an ongoing survey throughout the decade called the American Community Survey. The American Community Survey is part of the 2010 Decennial Census program, but now provides all these data to communities every year, not just once a decade. On May 1st, we begin the door-to-door enumeration of the roughly 48 million households that did not mail back or receive a form at their home. Some households that filled out a form may still get a visit from a census taker. For example, households that returned an incomplete form or submitted a form too late for us to check them off our list will get a visit. The follow-up visit serves as a safety net to help us ensure everyone is counted in the Census. We then have a process to look for and weed out any duplication at a later time. One of the ways the Census Bureau conducts the census for people who live in traditional housing units or in parts of the country that both don't uniformly receive mail at their residence and are far from any town are counted via update/enumerate. The Census Bureau visits each housing unit and takes a face-to-face interview with those in the household instead of mailing out a form.
