 MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
On the last Monday of May, we observe what was known as Decoration Day, a day set aside to honor the Civil War dead by decorating their graves with strewn flowers. Now known as Memorial Day, it commemorates the men and women who died during all military service to our country. Many hold with tradition and decorate the graves of their loved ones with bouquets. In addition, all known veterans will have an American Flag at their grave placed by a group - Sons of the American Legion Squadron 275. The Independence group (with the help of many other patrotic organizations) does 8 cemeteries in the Kenton County area. LET US REMEMBER THE REASON FOR THE DAY!
Covington will participate in the day (May 31) with a parade at 2:00 from Holmes High School to Linden Grove Cemetery where a Memorial Service will be held. The parade will be held rain or shine with the exception of a extended thunderstorm.
Interested groups may contact Charles Menke at 292-2327 for information.

Western and Montague Project - SD#1
SD1 will be starting a project on Western and Montague at Pike Street. Work will begin 5/17/10. They are essentially treating this as two projects so the traffic on Montague and the traffic on Western will not be impacted at the same time. The Montague portion will take about 1 week. Montague will remain open to traffic at all times and will be controlled by flaggers. Parking will be impacted and motorists will likely experience some delays. The work on Western will take about 3 weeks. Western will be shut down between Pike and Lewis, but residents will still be able to access their homes. Northbound through traffic may be detoured down 12th Street to Jillians Way then back to Pike. Southbound traffic on Western may take Lewis to Montague to get around the closure.

2010 River Cities Historic Preservation Awards
The City of Covington will join thousands of individuals around the country as part of a nationwide celebration of National Preservation Month in May 2010. "This Place Matters" is the theme of the month-long celebration, which is sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Since the National Trust created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, the National Trust has extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country's cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement. Breaking Even:
Breaking Through
A Free Creative Small Business Symposium
Three of the hottest small businesses in the area today offer keen insights on how creative community thinking has brought their businesses to the forefront of success, and Covington's Small Business Guru offers a practical workshop on how to move a great business idea into the realm of the possible in 'Breaking Even: Breaking Through'. The series, which comprises four separate symposiums in May, is sponsored by the Artisans Enterprise Center, Renaissance Covington and the City of Covington Community Development Department. Purpose of the Series: Anyone who wants to learn what makes small businesses successful in Twenty First Century middle America and beyond should attend. Hear the stories of these businesses, how they got started, what challenges they faced, and how they waged victorious with hard work and focus. Learn from their experiences as the owners tell you what inspired them to open their doors and what continues to inspire them to wake up everyday to face the often grueling schedule of a Small business owner. About the Speakers~
Lisa Kagan, owner, Melt Eclectic Deli: Melt brings a community center point to Northside, and reminds people of what it's like to have community and food! In turn people will travel for what Melt provides! Lisa's ethical importance on local sourcing, great atmosphere and quality has been the reason why we all keep coming back for more! In this discussion, we will talk about how Melt got started, the power of word of mouth, and the secret to success in making sure the 'Melt message' travels?. Dan Korman, owner, Park+Vine: The rise of the Green General Store. Park+Vine is successful in not only selling stuff, but inspiring people to learn more and adopt sustainable lifestyles. Not only is Park + Vine a general store, but a product thought leader. Dan Korman, the owner, will talk about his past as Community Planner and how his experience led to his business model, and how he retains the loyalty of his customers. Rick Hoffman, owner, Covington Clay: Rick Hoffman came here from the east coast and settled his business in Covington; a two-tiered business model offers both retail and classes in ceramic and clay. The difference in his business model is that when he started out, he discovered there were few examples of an education-based small business models. Rick sees marketing as an essential capital investment, something that is an essential part of his foundation and it's paid off. Rebecca Volpe, City of Covington: As the Go-To for all small businesses looking to open their doors in Covington, Rebecca has seen and heard a lot. She will offer practical advice and insights on what makes for a successful business. She will talk about the process of making an idea become reality, the opportunities and challenges of starting a small business in the current economy, and strategies for success. The session will encourage a Q&A session as well as a review of how new business owners can utilize their local municipalities for additional resources. The Covington Fire Department
Residential Knox Box Loaner Program
What is a Residential Knox Box? A residential Knox Box is a high security steel key box, used for the storage of entry keys, which can be hung on an exterior door. In case of an emergency, the fire department can open the Knox Box with a master key, retrieve an entry key and gain access to the person in need.
What is the purpose of the program? Often we are called to a home due to illness or injury and the occupant is unable to let us in. This program allows us to quickly and nondestructively gain access to elderly, disabled, or incapacitated persons that are in need of Fire/EMS services.
What are the benefits? · Provides the Covington Fire Department rapid access without causing damage to the residence · Allows a medical information sheet to be stored in the Knox Box · Includes a home safety check · Enhances the Covington Fire Department's ability to protect the health and safety of our citizens.
Who is eligible? To be eligible for this program an applicant must: · Reside in Covington Kentucky · Live in a one or two-family residential building · Be age 55 or older and have a medical disability that inhibits mobility
This program is intended to fulfill a need that has been recognized within the Covington community, but would not have been possible without the help of Corporex and the Rotary Club of Covington. Thanks to a generous donation from these two organizations we are able to start our program with six Knox Boxes.
If you are interested in the program, or if you would like to make a donation to assist the program, please contact the Covington Fire Department at 859-431-0464. Or Email Captain Brian Bamberger at bbamberger@covkyfd.org

Windows Open And Convertible Tops Down - An Open Invitation To Theft Spring is here and summer isn't far behind. Warm, sunny days invite drivers to either roll down the windows, and for some, drive with the top down on their cars. That same wonderful weather makes thieves very happy too.
The Covington Police Department reminds drivers and passengers alike to be cautious when leaving a vehicle open. While it may be inconvenient to put the windows and top up every time the vehicle is parked, it is even more troublesome to find it ransacked. Many people have items such as cell phones, CDs, CD players, and GPS units that could be easily stolen from the vehicle. There are also important papers often in the glove compartment such as insurance and vehicle registration information. This can help a thief gain personal data that can lead to identification theft. And last but not least, the vehicle can be stolen. The inside of the vehicle may be hot upon return, but the odds are good that the vehicle will still be there with everything intact.

COVINGTON INDEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Nordheim Gallery is located on the beautiful and well maintained campus of historic Holmes High School. It is operated by Covington Independent Public Schools. The gallery presents new exhibits of work each month by visiting artists. It is open for special events and by appointment.
In May, the Nordheim Gallery features "Eccentricity" - a series of acrylic paintings and collages by Ruthe Wyman. Circles are everywhere. "Personally, I don't know a vicious circle. Everyone can relate to going round in circles. It's coming full circle that's a life-long experience," said Ms. Wyman about the theme of her work. She is an active member of the Boone County Visual Arts Association, has a B.A. in Art from Thomas More College and a M.A. in Art Education from the University of Cincinnati.

COMMUNITY GARDENS
Several area Veggie Gardens are underway and looking for participants and/or volunteers. If all goes as planned, each of these will add significantly to the beautification and well-being of our neighborhoods. All of them have the full support of our City management, as well as the neighborhood Civic Association. Some even have business partners. The goals are to provide healthy foods, neighbor bonding, youth activities, and attractive surroundings. EASTSIDE- Prospect Street.....Under the leadership of Jerry Avery and Bennie Doggett a very large garden is underway. Lots of raised beds for individual plots (want one?) or group plots will be provided. The abandoned American Legion building is planned for storage and water access...as well as an attractive mural on the front and sides. GOEBEL PARK-Fifth and Philadelphia Streets.....ROMA and the Drug Court Alumni are underway in establishing an attractive gateway into Covington from I-75 with new stone beds for berries, perennials and colorful annuals and wooden raised beds for veggies. Rain barrels and compost bins will assist these developments. WEST LATONIA-Ashland Avenue....Joshua Scarpacci and the West Latonia Neighborhood Association have begun a very nice fenced-in garden behind the community park/playground. Raised beds are planned, compost beds, a green house and rain barrels will support their efforts. Several neighbors (the Browns and the Pettys) have really stepped up to help. CENTER FOR GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS.....Rachel Hastings and the entire staff plus Andrea Dee (Kenton County Cooperative Extension Agent) have already built 5-raised beds (plus two mounded areas for potatoes and onions) in a "demonstration garden". A three-hour work session on 4/9 got all of this accomplished. MORNING GLORY BED AND BREAKFAST-Seventh Street.....Emily and Paul Weckman and Kenny Bussel and Brenda Zechmeister are in their 2nd year with an outstanding productive plot...several hundred pounds of tomatoes were delivered to Otto's Restaurant plus brussel sprouts, beans and much more. RITTE/YATES-Jackson and Lee Streets.....The 25 + year old garden started by the CGN is now headed up by Faye Massey. Several new helpers will be involved this year.
JOHN G.CARLISLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL'S "Carr-Collins Memorial Childrens Garden" on Pike Street....Another new area as an educational learning center spearheaded by Emily Weckman and Janice Wilkerson and the teaching and administative staffs. There are probably other areas not identified above. Let us know your efforts, participants and successes. We want to promote all of these, be they for just yourself or for others. Give one of us a call if you want to get more involved. Bud Thurman 859-341-2401 Natalie Gardner 859-292-2151

The 2010 Census Focus Shifts
The 2010 Census is shifting its focus to completing the Census by conducting door-to-door follow-up efforts to ensure the quality and accuracy of the Census. The Census Bureau goes to extraordinary lengths to make sure all residents, both citizens and noncitizens, are included in the Census. We are following-up with households who have not yet participated. Please open your door to census takers. Census takers are your neighbors - people hired from your community to make sure your area gets an accurate count. Answering their questions is easy, important and safe. Just take 10 minutes to fill the form out and mail it back. Your responses are safe and confidential, guaranteed by Title 13 and the Patriot Act. By law, no other government agency, law enforcement agency, national security agency, court, or anyone else can access your responses -- not anyone for any reason. The 2010 Census is the shortest in history - just 10 basic questions that only takes about 10 minutes to answer asking about topics such as name, age, race, Hispanic origin and home ownership. The Census is mandatory - the law requires everyone to respond. It is a civic responsibility. The 2010 Census has been streamlined - The "long form," which covered dozens of additional topics, has been converted to an ongoing survey throughout the decade called the American Community Survey. The American Community Survey is part of the 2010 Decennial Census program, but now provides all these data to communities every year, not just once a decade. On May 1st, we begin the door-to-door enumeration of the roughly 48 million households that did not mail back or receive a form at their home. Some households that filled out a form may still get a visit from a census taker. For example, households that returned an incomplete form or submitted a form too late for us to check them off our list will get a visit. The follow-up visit serves as a safety net to help us ensure everyone is counted in the Census. We then have a process to look for and weed out any duplication at a later time. One of the ways the Census Bureau conducts the census for people who live in traditional housing units or in parts of the country that both don't uniformly receive mail at their residence and are far from any town are counted via update/enumerate. The Census Bureau visits each housing unit and takes a face-to-face interview with those in the household instead of mailing out a form.
