#1 Cause of Home Fire Deaths: Smoking
Did you know that the number one cause of home fire deaths is smoking? On average, 1,000 people (smokers and non-smokers) are killed in smoking-related fires every year. Most people are asleep when the fires occur. It's important that you begin to practice fire safety in your home today! With a few simple steps, smokers and those who live with smokers can protect themselves from smoke-related fires caused by smoking materials like cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. For example:
- If you smoke, smoke outside.
- Whenever you smoke, use deep, sturdy ashtrays.
- Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out.
- Check chairs and sofas for cigarette butts.
- Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used.
- If you smoke, fire-safe cigarettes are better.
- Be alert!
- If You Smoke, Put it Out. All the Way. Every Time.
For more information on the Smoking & Home Fires Campaign, please contact our office at 431-0462. You can also visit the U.S. Fire Administration's Web site at www.usfa.dhs.gov/smoking for campaign information and view an incredible video that demonstrates just how fast a fire started by smoking materials can spread!

Got A Bike? Engrave It - Lock It Or Lose It
Bike riding and warm weather are a natural combination. But if your bike is stolen, hiking will be more your speed over the next few months. The Covington Police Department suggests all bike owners engrave their bikes. It's very simple to do and if needed, owners can go to the local precinct and borrow an engraving tool. Officers say using the ID numbers from a driver's license or Kentucky ID card is the best way to mark your bike. Never, Never use a social security number as an ID number. Another suggestion from officers is when storing a bike in a shed or garage, lock and attach it to a lawnmower or other heavy and bulky equipment. Thieves do break into sheds and garages. Attaching a bike to a piece of heavy equipment makes it more difficult to just walk or ride away from the area. For more information on how to safeguard your bike and other valuables in your home, garage or shed, contact one of the Police Department's Community Outreach Officers at (859) 292-2257.

Mayor Denny Bowman of Covington, Gary Keller of the Covington Business Council, Ken Ellis, District Personnel Director for Covington Independent Schools, Gayle Brown, Partnership Specialist for the Census Bureau, Walmart and the Covington Complete Count Committee provided awards to each of the 5 student winners (one from each elementary school) at a ceremony at John G. Carlisle Elementary School on Thursday, March 18. Winning posters are on display in the State Capitol Rotunda through the month of April. Click here to view the photos of the poster contest winners and the recognition ceremony.

The Randolph Park Community Garden This summer local organizations will be starting a community garden located at 10th and Prospect Streets, next to Randolph Park. Initiating this project are members of the Eastside Neighborhood Association, the Historic Licking Riverside Civic Association, and staff of the Kenton County Public Library. Guidance for the project is being provided by the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati where several project leaders are being certified in community gardening.
The garden will serve several purposes: to make use of vacant property, beautify the city, provide residents with an opportunity to grow their own food, and to foster new relationships among residents of Covington. Long range plans for the garden include 54 4'x8' raised beds, perennial fruit trees and shrubs, flower beds, and native plants, park benches, picnic tables, a walking path and mural. Moreover, the garden lies near part of the city's projected trail system along the Licking River. This trail was conceived as part of a Vision 2015 Licking River Master plan in 2008.
The Eastside Neighborhood Association has already conducted a development study of the area in conjunction with the University of Cincinnati. That survey, including the views of many of the area's residents, has been used to create a formal presentation outlining a workable development program. The community garden, which is located next to the park, would be a substantial step towards the park's improvement.

Behringer Crawford Museum
Behringer-Crawford Museum brings Archaeology to life with an Exciting Weekend of Events
Celebrate the fascinating Northern Kentucky archaeology with those who actually participated in historic digs in the region. BCM's first curator, Ellis Crawford, partnered with scholars from the University of Nebraska and the U.S. Geological Survey to conduct a series of archaeological excavations at Big Bone State Park and other locations that changed the way ice-age animals were understood and studied. Their discoveries were published internationally and brought Northern Kentucky's ice-age heritage into the international spotlight. Join excavation members at a luncheon on April 24 where they will discuss their time excavating and the excitement of finding some of the nation's best preserved ice-age fossils. This is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to speak to those who witnessed history first-hand.
Other activities taking place April 24 and 25 will include atlatl demonstrations, American Indian story-telling and singing presentations, and artifact identification provided by members of the group Cincinnati and Ohio Valley Archaeology Society and NKU. The weekend's presentation will be ended by a keynote talk of archaeology in this region presented by archaeologist and NKU faculty member Jeannine Kreinbrink. Please visit Behringer-Crawford Museum's website for complete weekend information including times and dates of presentations.
This weekend is in conjunction with Behringer-Crawford Museum's exhibit History Unearthed: Archaeology Speaks. The exhibit presents artifacts from the museum's collection not on exhibit in recent years for visitors to "discover" again. Also featured will be various forms of archaeology and ideas of how you can be an archaeologist in your own backyard - without digging up the flower garden.
History Unearthed: Archaeology Speaks - is a great way to listen to the stories that can be found below the ground. There's something for everyone - artifacts, photos, text panels detailing the prehistoric Indians from this region; a computer interactive station; and a FUN kid's section complete with an indoor dig. Great for preschool - elementary students, these junior archaeologists dig up REAL artifacts and even some Ice Age bones!!! But it is archaeology, so they don't get to keep them. Bring the kids, bring your friends and family, bring yourself. It's a beautiful display, please stop by to see it!
Exhibit sponsors include Riverfront Kiwanis, local archaeological companies N&E Env. Solutions, Gray & Pape, Inc. and Great Rivers Archaeological Services. The exhibit runs until June 6.
For more information on this exhibit or any other activity, please contact the museum at (859) 491-4003 or info@bcmuseum.org.

ONLY 10 Questions, 10 Minutes to Complete!
With one of the shortest questionnaires in history, the 2010 Census asks for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, and whether you own or rent your home. It takes only about 10 minutes for the average household to complete.
Why fill out the census form? Every household in the country will receive a questionnaire in 2010. To ensure an accurate and fair count of all populations at all geographic levels in the nation, the Census Bureau needs you or someone in your household to respond to the census questionnaire. It's important. - Census data affect funding for your community, your community's representation in Congress and your community leader's planning decisions. It's easy. - The census questionnaire takes only a few minutes to answer and return by mail. It's confidential. - Your responses are protected by law (Title 13, U.S. Code, Section 9). All Census Bureau employees have taken an oath to protect confidentiality and are subject to a jail term, a fine - or both - for disclosing any information that could identify a respondent or household. More info... It's required by law. - The information you provide is combined with responses provided by your neighbors and other households across the country, to provide summary statistical data that are used by various local, state and federal agencies.
Census affects funding in your community Census data directly affect how more than $300 billion per year in federal and state funding is allocated to communities for neighborhood improvements, public health, education, transportation and much more. That's more than $3 trillion over a 10-year period. Spending just a few minutes to fill out your census form will help ensure your community gets its fair share of federal and state funding.
Census affects your voice in Congress Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is also used to apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and to redistrict state legislatures.
Census affects your representation in state and local government Census data are used to define legislature districts, school district assignment areas and other important functional areas of government.
Census informs your community's decisions The census is like a snapshot that helps define who we are as a nation. Data about changes in your community are crucial to many planning decisions, such as where to provide services for the elderly, where to build new roads and schools, or where to locate job training centers.
