Paint It Forward - Results!

City of Covington employees painted the exterior of some low income owner occupied homes located in the city this summer.  These homes were chosen based upon need.  Several departments sponsored houses and painted them on recent Saturdays.  Code Enforcement staff did prep work in advance and coordinated the program, sponsorships and donations.

Race Street in Cincinnati will remain closed until the end of August to accomplish the upgrade to the Freedom Way/Race Street intersection.  Click here for maps and other related information on the detours.

Highland Pike Roadway Stabilization Project
This project is being completed to stabilize a section of Highland Pike in the City of Covington just east of Wrights Point.  There is an existing landslide downslope of the road which is currently impacting the serviceability of the roadway.  The roadway will be stabilized and protected from the landslide by construction of a drilled shaft soldier pile and lagging retaining wall along the downslope edge of the road.  This construction will utilize large drilling equipment that will require closing one lane of traffic in the approximately 500 foot long construction area. One lane of two way traffic will be maintained using temporary traffic signals.  The lane closure will begin July 20, 2009.  Delays should be anticipated through this area for the duration of the project which is scheduled for completion in September 2009.

12th Street Project
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's plan to widen 12th Street has been split into two separate projects.  The section between the Interstate and Russell Street will begin around the middle of August.  The section between Russell Street and Scott Street including Madison Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets will likely begin in the next 6-8 weeks.  As part of this project, all overhead utilities will be relocated underground.  We will try to provide as much notice as possible for any temporary lane or road closures that are needed to complete construction.

Sanitary Work
The Sanitation Department Number 1 and their sub-contractors will be performing sanitary main and lateral replacements on 28th, 39th @ Lincoln, Sehon, and Vermont Streets.  Road closures
may be present at times, but access for local traffic will be maintained.  Click here to view map of affected areas.

Underground Utility Installation

Duke Energy will be placing electric underground, as shown on the attached map (link below), beginning Monday, June 29, which will take approximately 2 weeks.  This work is necessary in order to accommodate placing the electric lines along 12th Street underground as part of the upcoming construction project being done by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.  The roadway will be restored to its existing condition upon project completion.
Click here to view map of work area.

Gas Main Replacements
Duke Energy is currently replacing gas mains as part of 3 projects within the City of Covington.  The project areas are shown in the attached maps.  This work must be complete by the end of the year, but we are expecting everything to be done by the end of summer.  The roadways will be restored to their original condition or better upon project completion.  Please be patient with the roadway restoration, all of the new gas mains have to be tested before the road can be resurfaced.

Potholes
Right-of-Way crews continue to repair potholes throughout the city.  Please report any potholes or road related maintenance issues to the Department of Public Improvements at 292-2292.

The historic architectural styles of Covington, Kentucky

Over the next several months, we will be highlighting different types of architectural styles found in Covington.  There are a wide variety of styles from the very ornate large Victorian homes, to the more subtle detailing of the art modern.  Each month, we will describe a different style and showcase some great examples of the style from Covington's own buildings. I hope you enjoy learning about these and that as you walk though the streets of Covington you will be able to pick out the different styles!

Queen Anne c. 1880 - c. 1910707 Gr - Queen Anne

This style is named after "Good Queen Anne", who ruled England from 1702-1714. Although loosely based on architecture during her reign, the style was developed in England during the late nineteenth century.  The English architect most closely associated with the style was Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1912).  American architects were influenced by his sprawling manor houses and H.H. Richardson designed the first American Queen Anne style building in 1874.

Contrast of materials is a hallmark of the Queen Anne style.  Wood-frame versions were often constructed with different materials on different levels, for example, wood siding on the first floor, shingles on the second floor and half-timbering above in roof gables.  Brick versions used polychromatic brick, often laid in decorative patterns, molded brick, decorative tile and terra-cotta inserts to achieve the same effect.  Queen Anne [2] Projective bays and oriels, elaborate roof lines with fancy chimneys, gables and turrets, stained glass windows and transoms, all are hallmarks of this style.  Larger homes would usually have a large wrap-around front porch, while smaller homes were graced by smaller entry porches, both would be graced with lots of ornamental millwork.

Interesting facts about the Queen Anne Style~

- Queen Annes in America did not use the traditional white trim as they did in England. Instead they used bold colors resulting in polychromatic paint schemes on exteriors. In the 1970's this style of painting became known as the "painted ladies."
- American Queen Anne style also has three sub-styles called, Stick, Eastlake, and Shingle Styles.

Licking Riverside
HLRCA is organizing a neighborhood "Lobster Bake" in September for members and neighbors in Licking riverside. This event will take place in GeorgeRogersClarkPark. It will highlight improvements to the park, including restoration of the fountain to working condition. And, it will be a great place to see old and new friends!
HLRCA will not have an August Monthly Meeting. Our September 23 meeting will feature a presentation from Jeff Eger, Sanitation District #1 General Manager, on activities that are important to Licking Riverside residents, including opportunities for greenscaping and re-built alleys. SD1 is required by a Federal Consent Decree to make expensive improvements to the combined sewer system that currently discharges untreated sewage into the Licking and Ohio Rivers each time it rains heavily.  Using smart, green solutions to reduce the amount of storm water that enters the sewer system is less expensive, and more effective. The September agenda will also highlight Covington's "FULL SPECTRUM " arts events during the entire month of October. These include Art off Pike, a music weekend, and theater.  Meeting location and time will be provided separately to members and in local publications.
The Executive Committee has launched the Strategic Plan update, as outlined at our July 22 meeting. Members will be invited to get actively involved beginning in September. We intend to complete the update by year-end, so that it can guide our activities in 2010 and beyond.
Meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of the month. 6:30 pm is social 1/2 hour, and meetings are 7 - 8:00 pm, being  held at various locations in the neighborhood.

August: A time of Retirements, Promotions and Hiring

The Fire Department is losing 166 years of leadership with the retirements of Lt. John Cross, Lt. Glen Fossett, Eng. Mike Swegles, Eng. Chris Fryman, Eng. Bill Wagner, Eng. Barry Meyer and Firefighter Perry McClure.  As we honor their achievements and celebrate their careers, they look forward to starting the next chapter in their lives.  We would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to their families, for sharing them with us.  Best wishes in the future!

Retirements bring promotions, 2 new Lieutenants and 6 new Engineers.  While these individuals have been tested and are learning new skills, it takes years to develop the knowledge base needed for their new positions.  These firefighters are among our top performers and we expect great things from them.

Retirements also bring the need for new hires.  We are currently processing candidates to fill 11 open positions in the department.  Once hired, the 11 recruits will spend 10 weeks in firefighting training to serve our community.  After recruit training, those not certified will spend 26 weeks to be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians.

House Numbers

We need your assistance to improve our response to your emergency.  With all of the technology today, one of the most basic items is often overlooked.  House and apartment numbers are vital to our quick response.  Take a moment as you walk or drive through your neighborhood and locate your neighbor's house numbers.  You will realize that some are missing, hard to locate or painted the same color as the house.  Some are on mailboxes, front doors, cast in the brick work, over garage doors or another location.  The numbers follow a pattern, but are not the same in all neighborhoods. Look on both sides of the street, in some cases the numbers are as much as 20 numbers different.  You will quickly see the challenges we face on a daily basis.  Now, walk out to the street at your home.  Could you quickly find your address in an emergency?  What about 3 o'clock in the morning with few outside lights on?  With a little paint or reflective tape or a low voltage accent light, you can greatly improve the visibility of your address and maintain the aesthetic look of your home.  Be creative and get the whole family involved!

Elderly Warned To Be Alert For Deception Burglaries

Covington Police Department is warning residents - especially the elderly and their relatives - to be aware that deception burglars are again at work, and have struck in some City neighborhoods. These criminals generally target senior citizens by deceiving and distracting the victim. In recent crimes, the suspects have posed as water department employees, Duke workers, or contractors pointing to a problem with a fence or a roof. These criminals have also been known to use a mother and child to deceive their victims.
While the victim is distracted by this member of the team, an accomplice slips into the house, going through it quietly looking for valuables and cash. The victim is outside, totally unaware of the deception.
All residents should take certain precautions if there is a stranger at the door. Never step outside of your house with someone you don't know. Never allow a stranger to come into your house, even if it appears to be a person in trouble or someone claiming to be a friend of a neighbor. Be suspicious of utility workers who arrive unannounced. Utilities call ahead before they send over workers or technicians.
Residents should keep their house secure. Anyone worried about a suspicious stranger should call 911 right away with a description of the individual. Do not put off calling. Police need to know what is happening on your street right away.
Neighbors of the County's elderly can help as well, by watching what is going on outside the homes of seniors. Adult children of senior citizens should remind their parents of the possible dangers.
Investigators believe many deception burglaries don't get reported. In some cases, victims may not even realize they've been victimized until long after the fact. Weeks later they might go looking for a piece of jewelry or a precious heirloom, and it's just not there. In some cases, victims don't report these incidents because they are embarrassed, or they fear retribution. But these victims should understand that neglecting to call may allow a criminal to go free and victimize someone else.

Swimmers take your mark.....
And they did!
In case you missed it, Covington's Annual Pool Swim Derby took place on July 24 at Goebel Pool. Swimmers from the 3 Covington Pools: Senator Gus Sheehan Pool (West Covington Pool), Randolph Park Pool and Goebel Park Pool, competed in the 22-event Derby. The Covington Recreation Department provided medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place swimmers in each event, and T-shirts were given to all participants to highlight their participation. Swimmers ranged in age from 4 to 16. While all swimmers made a great showcase of their skills, West Covington took the 1st place title, with Goebel coming in 2nd and Randolph pulling in 3rd. Each pool received a plaque to commemorate their achievement in the 2009 Swim Derby. Congratulations to all swimmers and their coaches!

Trail Building Continues on the Bike Trails in Devou Park!

We have started chipping away on the Bates Combs loop and look forward to making great progress in the months to come. The Bates Combs loop will be approximately 3 miles in length. That is a lot of dirt slinging and honeysuckle clearing. Our goal is to have the loop, and thus the trails, open by spring of 2010.  The quicker we finish the loop, the sooner we can open the trails!

Thanks for your support in creating the Tri-State's newest Mountain bike destination.

Have you ever thought of participation in a "community garden"? A veggie plot right in your neighborhood! We are exploring this, perhaps using city-owned properties for next year. Perhaps several different plots can be organized in various neighborhoods.

If you would like to participate with some of your friends and family and have a specific area in mind... contact one of us to begin the process. We would like to select some sites this summer and get the necessary approvals, plans and supplies ready this fall/winter... so a quick start will be possible next spring.

CENSUS 2010
its in our hands

2010 Census is Coming
The Census Bureau has changed the way it conducts the national count. The 2010 Census will be a short-form only census and will count all residents living in the United States as well as ask for name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, relationship and housing tenure - taking just minutes to complete.

Why fill out the census form?
Every household in the country will receive a questionnaire in 2010. To ensure an accurate and fair count of all populations at all geographic levels in the nation, the Census Bureau needs you or someone in your household to respond to the census questionnaire.
It's important. - Census data affect funding for your community, your community's representation in Congress and your community leader's planning decisions.
It's easy. - The census questionnaire takes only a few minutes to answer and return by mail.
It's confidential. - Your responses are protected by law (Title 13, U.S. Code, Section 9). All Census Bureau employees have taken an oath to protect confidentiality and are subject to a jail term, a fine - or both - for disclosing any information that could identify a respondent or household. More info...
It's required by law. - The information you provide is combined with responses provided by your neighbors and other households across the country, to provide summary statistical data that are used by various local, state and federal agencies.

Census affects funding in your community
Census data directly affect how more than $300 billion per year in federal and state funding is allocated to communities for neighborhood improvements, public health, education, transportation and much more. That's more than $3 trillion over a 10-year period. Spending just a few minutes to fill out your census form will help ensure your community gets its fair share of federal and state funding.
Census affects your voice in Congress
Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is also used to apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and to redistrict state legislatures.
Census affects your representation in state and local government
Census data are used to define legislature districts, school district assignment areas and other important functional areas of government.
Census informs your community's decisions
The census is like a snapshot that helps define who we are as a nation. Data about changes in your community are crucial to many planning decisions, such as where to provide services for the elderly, where to build new roads and schools, or where to locate job training centers.

Timeline~
