Circuses, Etc. |
"The idea that it is funny to see wild animals coerced into acting like clumsy humans, or thrilling to see powerful beasts reduced to cringing cowards by a whip-cracking trainer is primitive and medieval."
Desmond Morris, former Director of London Zoo and noted animal behaviorist.
"But for the use of physical punishment by, and fear of their oppressors, animals would never be a part of a circus."
Richard Pryor, actor
"We will never have animals in our shows. They are animals not performers, they should be in the jungle."
Pierre Parisien: Cirque du Soleil
I don't believe in the concept of hell, but if I did I would think of it as filled with people who were cruel to animals.

A Message From
Pat Derby
Ed and I will be leaving for Hollywood later this week, in time to view final rehearsals and take care of last-minute preparations for Circus PAWS' debut on Saturday.
Last year, when we first started discussing the possibility of doing an animal-free circus, our original ideas about the event were on a much smaller scale. I seem to remember a discussion about Ed and me wearing clown noses and big red shoes.
The shoes and noses will not be happening this weekend. Instead, Circus PAWS has developed into an event that is nothing short of extraordinary, thanks to the efforts of our producer Robert Gelman, assistant producer Kate Johnson and artistic director Nathalie Yves Gaulthier. We are so grateful and so proud of what these talented and dedicated individuals have accomplished.

LE PETIT CIRQUE VISITS ARK 2000 |
I remember how thrilled we were when we first viewed videos of Nathalie's Le Petit Cirque. "Sign 'em, they're wonderful!" I said, and Ed agreed. We had no idea at that time just how talented and generous these kids truly are! And now here we are, less than a week away, and what incredible talent we have in our "little show."
Thank you Bob Barker for your wonderful Circus PAWS "Come On Down" public service announcement! And thank you to our many other dedicated sponsors. Because of you, more than 500 tickets have been purchased for children and distributed through cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club, Sheriff's Youth Foundation of Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Police Department's Police Athletic League, Jeopardy Program and LAPD Cadets, as well as Project OneSong, and the After-School All-Stars of Los Angeles. All of these 500+ kids will be attending Circus PAWS for free!

Tickets for our three shows are still available. We hope many of you will consider attending our 5:30 p.m. VIP reception and 7 p.m. show on Sunday. Ed and I will be there, along with members of our staff, including ARK 2000 sanctuary manager and our senior elephant keeper, Brian Busta; ARK 2000 office manager and PAWS photographer, Lisa Jeffries; Kim Gardner, our events coordinator and program director; and several of PAWS longtime volunteers. You've talked with them, emailed them, Facebooked and Twittered with them and now you'll have the chance to meet them.
The VIP reception is also a chance for you to meet the performers as well as many of our sponsors and special guests. We look forward to seeing you there.
And now, take a look at the following video by 10-year-old Kaelyn Whaley, one of our performers. We had no idea she was filming this. The link came to us late last week from producer Robert Gelman, along with the message, "I think this might make you cry." It did.

AERP STATEMENT ON THE USE OF ELEPHANTS IN CIRCUSES
"It is our considered opinion that elephants should not be used in circuses. . . Elephants in circuses are bought and sold, separated from companions, confined, chained and forced to stand for hours and frequently moved about in small compartments on trains or trucks. They are required to perform behaviors never seen in nature. In short they are treated as commodities, as objects to provide entertainment for humans. The circus experience has nothing to do with the reality of elephant life and behavior. . . We believe that such intelligent, socially complex and long-lived animals should be treated with respect and empathy. An elephant's place is in the wild with its relatives and companions. The totally unnatural existence of captive elephants in a circus, which includes significant physical and emotional suffering, is a travesty. To allow this practice to continue is unjustified and unethical."
