PAWS Director Pat Derby congratulates Maggie.
Miss Tuskany 2009!
Miss Tuskany 2009 was crowned Saturday afternoon in San Andreas, California. The winner is Maggie, an African elephant born in Zimbabwe, raised in Anchorage, Alaska, and now residing at the PAWS' ARK 2000 sanctuary. Maggie ran a close race with African elephants Mara, Ruby, and Lulu, and Asian elephants Annie, Rebecca, Wanda, Gypsy and Nicholas, to win the title. Wanda, formerly of Detroit, Michigan, was first runner up.
Maggie is 29 years old, stands approximately 8 feet tall, and loves to spend her days trumpeting and knocking down trees. She is the darling of the African group and can usually be found standing between Mara and Ruby -- rumbling and batting her long eyelashes.
PAWS co-founders and directors, Pat Derby and Ed Stewart, announced the winner at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, before an enthusiastic crowd attending the annual Elephant Grape Stomp at the ARK 2000 Sanctuary.
At the end of the day, there were no losers. The Miss/Mr. Tuskany 2009 competition, the first of its kind that we know of, raised more than $15,000 for the elephants.
Thank you to everyone who voted for the elephants in this year's competition.
