Outdoor Spaces: Decks, Patios & Gazebos
Expand your home to embrace outdoor living
Labor Day is around the corner and a new season is about to begin. Many of us have just returned from our summer family vacations and the children are back in school. As we look forward to autumn we want to cherish memories of time shared with our family and friends during the summer and find ways to extend those good feelings throughout the year. Expanding your living area to the outdoors this fall is the ideal way to carry the simple pleasures of entertaining at home into new spaces and seasons. Today, there's no reason for a backyard to be just a vast expanse of lawn. The potential for your outdoor space is more exciting than ever. Swimming pools, decks, patios and outdoor kitchens turn the average backyard barbecue into a setting for sumptuous gourmet feasts and festivities. Rustic fireplaces and hi-tech patio heaters play an important role in lengthening the comfort of the outdoors to cooler months, allowing you to share wonderful evenings roasting marshmallows and making s'mores in the fall. Michael Kodis, author of "Ultimate Backyard", writes "If you want to raise the value of your home, start thinking about ways to add structural interest and comfort to your backyard, patio, deck, side yard - you name it." A home's living space can be doubled by the extension of the backyard. Outdoor spaces can be places to gather together or to escape to and relax in solitude.
Successful backyard design is much more than just adding appliances and accessories. It is best approached as an overall home-design process - an extension of your home, unifying the inside with the outside. As you begin your new adventure in backyard entertainment you will find that your friends - and your children's friends - will all want to come and enjoy your new abode. In well-designed outdoor spaces, you can create memories that will last a lifetime. |

Pros and Cons of Current Design Trends: What will work best for your home and lifestyle? Last year's "Urban Chic Style", with its stark interiors and super clean lines, seems to be fading fast and a new trend toward "Roomscapes" or "Uniquely Me Chic" is gaining popularity. Designs are evolving from model magazine style to an aesthetic that inventively mixes styles and periods. With this new emphasis on individuality, your home becomes a unique artistic expression of your personal style, integrating beauty, comfort and functionality. Spa-like Bathrooms Spa-like bathrooms are on the rise. Popular products include multi-jet shower systems, heated bathroom tiles, steam showers, towel warmers and LED lighting. Steam baths, one of the oldest healing remedies in the world, are reemerging as popular choices for the modern bath. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said "Give me the power to create a fever and I shall cure any disease." With a steam element added to a conventional shower, you can experience an invigorating steam shower, or choose the luxurious options of rain towers and multi-head showers. Steam showers are best installed by a professional as water vapor from a steam room can be damaging to your home if not properly installed. Built-Ins and Media Centers The trend for custom cabinetry continues to grow. Media centers and storage systems designed to accommodate your specific preferences and custom-designed details make your home truly one-of-a-kind. With new technology, kitchen appliances are made virtually invisible by building them into walls and niches. Built-ins save space and instill a clutter-free appearance throughout your home. Vessel Sinks (Raised Bowl Sinks) Vessel sinks are show-stoppers, in a variety of styles and colors, and are usually found in very stylish, luxurious bathrooms. Although trendy and beautiful, these sinks have some drawbacks. They stand higher than a standard sink, which can make them inconvenient, uncomfortable or high maintenance for people who splash water often when using the sink. Many children find these sinks difficult to use. Selecting vessel sinks for guest bathrooms and vanity rooms that have less traffic is usually the wisest choice. Jerusalem Stone Countertops A new countertop on the market is Jerusalem Stone. It resembles the sandy tones of limestone, but is not as porous and soft. Jerusalem Stone has the durability of granite and the smoothness of marble. As a natural stone, it adds great warmth to a room, but requires sealants at least once a year to prevent stains.

Environmentally Friendly Cork Flooring Natural, sound-absorbing and resilient
Cork flooring is one of the most environmentally friendly floorings on the market. It also is one of the best natural sound-absorbing materials available. Pet traffic is generally not an issue; keeping your large dog's nails trimmed will help keep your cork flooring looking beautiful. Cork has an advantage over hardwoods as it is resilient, absorbs impact and doesn't scratch or gouge as easily as hardwood. If you purchase the high-density cork that is used in commercial and industrial floors you will find it wears like iron. Pre-finished cork seams are unfinished and will turn black over time. It is best to buy site-finished cork that is cover with a low-VOC polyurethane varnish or a less durable wax coating. The natural colors of cork can range from almost white to deep, dark browns. Cork flooring comes in both tiles and panels - a thickness in the 3/16-inch range is typical for the one-foot-square tiles. The darkness of the earth tones is controlled by how long the cork is baked. The longer it is baked, the darker brown it becomes. The panels are one foot by three feet and they snap together similarly to laminate flooring. They look similar to hardwood planks when finished.

"My husband always talks about the return on investment - we use every square inch of our house now. We had the realtor who originally sold us this house come by one afternoon and she told us that the work we'd done was fantastic. She looked around and told us that anyone who looked at our house would buy it right away because the changes we made are great quality and tasteful. That's so great to know, especially in this market. But there's no way we'd ever sell this house. We love it ... now!" The Rosenbaums
