San Francisco Giants Recognize BMAB and Oracle Volunteers!
|
Bring Me A Book and a group of volunteers from Oracle were recognized for their philanthropic spirit with a homeplate ceremony by the San Francisco Giants on August 22. The ceremony featured members of the Oracle volunteer team and Bring Me A Book's President Dianne Calvi and Volunteer Program Coordinator Montez Davis appearing at the Giant's homeplate prior to the start of the game.
In September 2007, a group of 32 Oracle volunteers assisted Bring Me A Book in the preparation and shipping of 2,000 hardcover books to 6 rural villages in Malawi. The volunteers participated as part of Oracle's Global Volunteer Days, a two week company wide service effort that engages over 3,500 volunteers from 32 countries in over 110 community projects. Established in 2000, Oracle Global Volunteer Days was created by Oracle employees to promote volunteerism and, ultimately, make a lasting impact on local communities while celebrating year round service to nonprofit organizations throughout the world.
"It was truly an honor to partner with Oracle volunteers," says BMAB President Dianne Calvi. "Collaborative partnerships with philanthropic spirited corporations like Oracle allows us to fulfill our mission of providing easy access to high quality books and inspire a life long love of reading."

| Association of Fundraising Professionals Honors BMAB Partner The Summit League at the 21st Annual Silicon Valley Philanthropy Day! |

BMAB is honored to announce that the Summit League will be recognized at the 21st Annual Silicon Valley Philanthropy Day. Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the ceremony will take place on Monday, November 17 at the Hyatt Regency Santa Clara. The Summit League will be presented as a "Distinguished Volunteer Fundraiser Honoree" for their work with BMAB to help place 134 Bookcase Libraries in preschools and elementary schools throughout Santa Clara County.
In December 2006, the Summit League presented their 10th bi-annual Home for the Holidays tour and donated the total proceeds, over $178,000, to BMAB. With the funding BMAB was able to install 134 Bookcase Libraries and host First Teacher workshops at school sites.
"It was particularly meaningful for our children to receive these wonderful libraries of books. It not only emphasizes the importance of literacy for young children and their families, it signifies the commitment of the community through the generous donation of the Summit League to improve the lives of the youngest members of our society. Their contribution to Luther Burbank Elementary School will grow in our community and extend to countless others. The gift of reading has no limits and access to good literature has the power to break down barriers," said Marvelyn Maldonado, Principal for Luther Burbank Elementary School in San Jose.
Since 1957 the women of the Summit League, a non profit charitable organization, have raised funds for nonprofits working in the areas of education, health, welfare and the arts. Beneficiaries of the Summit League's efforts include: Montalvo, Downtown College Prep, Washington United Youth Center, Services for Brain Injury.

Fall 2008 NEWSLETTER
|
| Greetings!
With the back to school season in full swing, Bring Me A Book is helping students and teachers start the school year off right by providing preschools and elementary schools with libraries and sharing the knowledge about the importance of reading aloud to children. Already this fall, BMAB kicked off the school year and national literacy month with the San Francisco 49ers 1st Annual Kindergarten Kickoff by providing classroom libraries and take home books to all the kindergartners of Charles Drew Elementary School, located in the Bay View/Hunters Point communities near the 49ers stadium in South San Francisco.
BMAB's goal is to provide a Bookcase Library for every state-funded preschool and Headstart classroom in the state of California. In Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties alone, 186 preschools have been prequalified and are waiting for a Bookcase Library. In addition, 100 preschools in these counties need a replenishment of BMAB books for their existing libraries. For only $200, BMAB can replenish a preschool library. Please visit our website www.bringmeabook.org and consider making a donation today!
We encourage everyone to help us achieve our vision of a world where all children read and succeed!

The San Francisco 49ers and Bring Me A Book Partner for Kindergarten Kickoff!
The San Francisco 49ers and Bring Me A Book celebrated National Literacy Month on September 16 with the 1st Annual Kindergarten Kickoff for the students of Charles Drew College Preparatory Academy in San Francisco's Bayview/Hunter's Point district. The two hour event featured the dedication of four Kindergarten classroom libraries, read aloud sessions and bookmaking activities with San Francisco 49ers owner Dr. John York, San Francisco County Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and 49ers players Joe Staley, Joe Toledo, JJ Finley and Cody Wallace. The event also featured a presentation of a $10,000 donation from the San Francisco 49ers Foundation to Bring Me A Book.
"It's not enough to say that I care about the children every day. This demonstrates to them in a very tangible way that the whole community is expecting something great from these children," said Principal Tamitrice Rice Mitchell. "The 49ers didn't just drop off the books - they took the time to read and share in a wonderful activity with them. This is something our students will remember their whole lives."
The morning opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the donation of 4 Bookcase Libraries - one to each of the Kindergarten classrooms. The players helped kick off the Kindergarten year by reading the book Chrysanthemum, a book focused on the importance of Respect and assisted the students in creating their own books about why Respect is important to them. At the end of the day, each student received their own hard cover copy of Chrysanthemum autographed by the 49ers players.
The Kindergarten Kickoff is part of the San Francisco 49ers Foundation Community Tuesdays program, a season long program designed to raise awareness of the charitable activities of the 49ers players while highlighting the services and support provided by nonprofit organizations to the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to read aloud sessions and bookmaking activities, 49ers players spoke to the children about why reading is important.
"I loved reading when I was a kid," said Tackle Joe Staley. "My mom is a librarian so she encouraged me to read all throughout school and it has given me the discipline and knowledge I needed to succeed not only in school, but in football and life. I really enjoyed being able to come back here and share with these children all the lessons I have learned from reading!"

BMAB Expands Throughout Marin County!

In June 2007, with funding from First 5 Marin, the Marin Community Foundation and generous private donors, BMAB launched our Marin County Pilot Program to deliver BMAB programs to Marin County and the North Bay region including: Novato, San Geranimo Valley, San Rafael, Marin City, Sausalito and the Shoreline Districts. To date, the BMAB Marin Pilot Program has placed Bookcase Libraries in 30 schools and has completed 4 First Teacher training workshops, including training 10 Marin community members to continue working with teachers and parents to expand the program in the community. To continue the rollout in Marin County, BMAB is slated to deliver Bookcase Libraries to an additional 40 schools and conduct over 20 First Teachers workshops, ultimately impacting over 1,400 children and parents. The driving force of BMAB's Marin County Pilot Program is BMAB volunteer Barbara Siskin. In addition to her enthusiastic passion for children's literacy, Barbara also brings with her a background of successful experience in strategic marketing, communications, educational fundraising and program development.
"I was inspired to get involved with Bring Me A Book because I wanted Marin's young children and their families to benefit from what Bring Me A Book provides for entire communities: easy access to the best children's books and inspiring parents to read aloud to their children," says Barbara. "This effort enhances community cooperation, builds trust, and educates us all. It builds relationships from within our community to best understand and relate to what the needs of our communities truly are." In addition to Barbara's leadership, BMAB has been fortunate to have many enthusiastic community partners throughout Marin County help us achieve our goals. Integral to BMAB's success in Marin are key partnerships with Parent Services Project and Raising a Reader, who identify and reach out to families most in need of BMAB's programs. BMAB has also partnered with the Marin Community Foundation's School Linked Services to directly run and oversee the maintenance of BMAB programs in preschools and elementary schools throughout the region. BMAB is grateful to Barbara and all of our Marin County partners for the continued success of our Marin County Pilot Program!
