PURPOSE PRIZE FELLOW
Purpose Prize

We are proud to announce that Judy Koch, our founder, was named a 2007 Purpose Prize Fellow.  The Purpose Prize Fellowship honors outstanding leaders over the age of 60 that tackle community needs through philanthropic endeavors.

"I am honored to be in the company of Purpose Prize Fellows," says Koch.  "I hope we are all providing models of how we can lower the cost of doing business by not reinventing the wheel, and visibility is essential for us to learn with whom we can collaborate to expand our mission."

BMAB's MLK Elementary Jazz Event
Author Karen Ehrhardt helps
students showcase their books
Feature: BMAB Brings Jazz and Books Together in Oakland

On October 17, over 150 students, parents, and community members enjoyed a festive evening of jazz and books at Oakland's Martin Luther King Elementary (MLK).  This unique event celebrated MLK's ongoing literacy efforts!

While families were treated to a pizza dinner, renowned jazz vocalist Ed Reed performed and award-winning children's author Karen Ehrhardt read her nationally acclaimed book, This Jazz Man. The Oakland Raiderettes addressed the crowd, and several MLK students read books they wrote themselves during BMAB-sponsored writing workshops.

BMAB proudly collaborated on this event with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity - Berkeley Alumni, Oakland Ready to Learn, Oakland Parents Literacy Project, HEROES (Helpers Engaged in Reading Oakland's Excelling Schools) and KatzConnects.

BMAB Expands Nationwide
Seattle New School
Cisco employees and other community members launch New School libraries

With support from Cisco Systems' Customer Advocacy group, BMAB has been working to expand our Bookcase Libraries nationwide!  In October, BMAB placed 12 bookcases in Seattle's New School.  In November, Chicago's Nash School received 11 bookcases.  In total, Cisco plans to donate over 60 BMAB bookcases across the nation.  Next up: New York!

Chicago Nash School
A new bookcase for Nash School!
"This was like a dream come true," says Betsy Fonesca, a former BMAB employee and current educator and administrator in Chicago Public Schools.  "Two years ago when I worked for BMAB, I never imagined that this ribbon cutting ceremony would be taking place in Chicago!  Thank you for selecting Nash School."

International Work Flourishes
BMAB books a hit in Kenya!
Kenya: Linda Casentini and Bonnie Pratt, members of the Summit League and friends of BMAB, independently fundraised over $3,600 to send a collection of new, hardback books to  a needy primary school in Amboseli, Kenya.  In October, Ker & Downey Safaris Ltd helped deliver the books to a Maasai grateful community!  See our collection of photos.

Celebrating shipping to Malawi
Malawi: Our Interactive Community Libraries Campaign with Save the Children, Malawi grew more than we ever imagined.  In addition to our initial 2,000 new children's books for the Balaka District, we partnered with nonprofit Books For Africa to send an extra 26,000 schoolbooks to Malawi!

Yucatán, Mexico: Under the initiative of high school senior Blair Nelson, the Menlo School in Atherton has "adopted" a village as part of our Yucatán fundraising campaign.  They've already raised over $12,000 towards providing high quality books for children! In partnership with Proyecto Itzaes, we will deliver over 600 books to three villages in Yucatán during 2008.  Support us with your donation!

BMAB Hong Kong Fundraising Success!

In October, Bring Me A Book Hong Kong (BMABHK) hosted its inaugural fundraising event.  Sponsored by the Chen Yet-Sen Family Foundation, BMABHK is our first international charter!

BMABHK celebrates the installation of a new Bookcase Library.

The inaugural event for BMABHK raised over $250,000 to support and continue BMABHK's work.  To date, BMABHK has installed 10 Bookcase Libraries and conducted 23 First Teachers Workshops.

Thanks to Our Volunteers!
As 2007 draws to a close, we are so grateful to all of our volunteers who have donated their time and dedication to our cause.  This year, volunteers have helped us assemble bookcases, cover thousands of books, and organize our supplies.  They have brought so much joy to our warehouse!  We especially thank the following groups for their generous support during the fall:
