News in October
breast cancer

The most important thing in illness is never to lose heart.

  ~Nikolai Lenin

Greetings!

October is a particularly important month as it represents National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer affects mothers, sisters, daughters, aunts, wives and friends and is something every woman (and man) should know about.

"Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races and Hispanic origin populations."

In 2007---over two hundred THOUSAND women were diagnosed with breast cancer and in the year 2007, over forty THOUSAND of them died.

It is important to know the risk factors that you as a woman may have (heredity, age, hormone use, activity level, alcohol consumption and more) and it is vital that you learn how to lower those risk factors. At HHA we take October pretty seriously. Please pick up a free pink ribbon at our front desk and join us in showing support for breast cancer research and breast cancer awareness. It's cool to wear pink. Even for guys :)

If you would like to get informed:

Check out this website to find out where early screenings occur, what risk factors there are, how to access community support and more. Breast Cancer Awareness is SO important for not only women living now, but for the next generation behind us.

This month we explore healthy fall eating (a breast cancer risk reducer)at Sol Yoga, how acupuncture can help treat breast cancer, a very full monthly calendar, and a really cool event Samantha is participating in.

Yours Truly,

Holistic Health Team

Acupuncture Q&A
breast cancer ribbon
Q. Alice, how can acupuncture help someone newly diagnosed with breast cancer?
A. Chinese Medicine can be quite helpful in a number of different ways after a breast cancer diagnosis. The anxiety, sleep disturbance and other stress related symptoms that often accompany a catastrophic diagnosis like breast cancer can be treated and often greatly reduced using acupuncture and herbal medicines. Both acupuncture and herbs can help speed recovery from surgery and aid in controlling post surgical pain. If chemotherapy is indicated, acupuncture can help with the nausea and malaise that often accompanies this kind of treatment. Likewise with radiation therapy acupuncture can be a useful adjunct for help with fatigue and other side effects. Once the indicated Western treatments have been completed, Chinese herbal medicine can be used to build the strength and energy back in the body that has been depleted using Western therapies. In Chinese Medicine, it is believed that strengthening the body's energy and correcting imbalances can help decrease the chances of recurrences of cancers. But we also think that Chinese Medicine can make a major contribution to treatment of breast cancers by mitigating side effects of prescription medications and therefore helping patients complete all their Western treatment including the 5 years estrogen blocking medications which may be indicated for women with estrogen dependent breast cancers.
Reflection 1

michelle

Many of you have gotten to know Michelle this past year and you have gotten to see what a wonderful, delightful human being she is. Michelle was a brilliant addition to the HHA team and will be sorely missed.

Michelle has completed her graduate program at Hood College and is now the Program Director at Brightview Senior Living. While we are sad to be without her, we know that she is doing an amazing job there and touching lives in so many positive ways. Michelle-thank you for your hard work and dedication to HHA.
