Sunlight: Friend or Foe?
The Vitamin D and Sunscreen DebateAs a follow up to our article on Safe Sunscreens last newsletter, we discuss today the implications of Vitamin D and sunscreen use. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that our bodies make after exposure to sunlight. It is important in a wide-range of health conditions and is found to be deficient in many people. And while there is no question that sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer (as well as nasty sunburns), recent research has also shown that a sunscreen
with SPF of 8 blocks your ability to synthesize Vitamin D by 92.5%, and
increasing to SPF 15 blocks nearly 99% of your ability to make Vitamin D!Read on for the full article exploring this timely, fascinating, and controversial topic!
