| Electrodermal screening helps desensitize patients
By Nanci Bompey, Asheville Citizen-Times, March 24, 2009
Julia Rosa has suffered from seasonal allergies and asthma her whole life, but after undergoing allergy desensitization at her naturopath's office, the Candler resident said she hasn't sneezed this allergy season.
"Hands down, there really is no comparison," Rosa said.
Asheville naturopath Eric Lewis is one of the few practitioners in the region using electrodermal screening and acupressure to help desensitize patients to potential allergens.
"The goal of this is to change the way the body perceives a substance," Lewis said of the process. "The goal is to reverse sensitivity to these things so that a patient can tolerate these things in the future."

Neti Pots: Ancient wisdom for clean sinuses!
|
|
Neti pots have been used throughout history as a holistic
health care solution in various parts of Asia and in India as part of Yoga and
Ayurvedic traditions. The flush of warm salt water in the sinus cavity provides
much needed moisture and relief from sinus pressure, stuffiness, headaches and
the typical runny nose.
We LOVE neti pots, and find them to be one of the best hidden treasures in the fight to stay comfortable and sane during allergy season. Read on to learn more and read the full article.

In an ideal world, we would all eat nothing but organic food. However, for most of us, this is simply not an affordable option.
Thanks to the Environmental Working Group (www.EWG.org) we have some help about how to choose what is worth buying organic. They have evaluated our food supply and have made recommendations about the 12 foods (The "Dirty Dozen") with the most pesticides (and therefore the ones you really should try to buy organic) and the 15 foods (The "Clean Fifteen") that are okay to buy conventionally.
Even if you've seen this list before, be sure to download the new version, as they have made updates and changes from past lists.

Smoothies for Springtime Sipping
|
|
Protein smoothies are such a simple, quick, tasty, healthy, practical, and portable way of adding protein and other nutrients to your diet. They make a great breakfast or energy-boosting snack when you're on the go.
However, many store-bought smoothies may have more calories and sugar than nutritional value. Good Morning America did a story on March 19th, showing that one Smoothie King concoction may have as many as 1000 calories and 250 grams of sugar (that's the equivalent of 13 Dunkin' Donuts Chocolate Frosted Donuts!!)
To avoid sugar and caloric overload, consider using your own blender to make a home-made concoction filled with HEALTHY ingredients that you have control over.
Here's one of Dr. Eric's delicious creations:
- 8 oz soy, rice, or almond milk
- 1 tbsp flaxseed oil
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1/4 cup silken tofu
- 1 banana
- 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
- 1/4 cup frozen raspberries
Blend and enjoy! |
