FDA Begins Process to Remove Breast Cancer Indication from Avastin Label
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that the agency is recommending removing the breast cancer indication from the label for Avastin (bevacizumab) because the drug has not been shown to be safe and effective for that use. The agency is making this recommendation after reviewing the results of four clinical studies of Avastin in women with breast cancer and determining that the data show that the drug does not prolong overall survival in breast cancer patients or provide a sufficient benefit in slowing disease progression to outweigh the significant risk to patients. NCI Announces Plans to Reinvigorate Clinical Trials
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has announced major changes to be made in the long-established Clinical Trials Cooperative Group Program that conducts many of the nationwide trials of new cancer therapies. In a major transformation, NCI intends to consolidate the nine groups that currently conduct trials in adult cancer patients into four state-of-the-art entities that will design and perform improved trials of cancer therapies. These changes are designed to provide greater benefits for cancer patients and more information for researchers. Read more here.

NCCN/NBGH Initiative to Develop Evidence-Based Cancer Treatment Recommendations for Large Employers
The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) will begin a three year initiative to develop recommendations for evidence-based benefits and programs for large employers. Employers are concerned about the impact cancer has on their workforce and how to address these issues. NCCN will work with the National Business Group on Health (NBGH) on developing these recommendations. Read more here.

Clinical Trial Results Show Regular Sunscreen Use May Reduce Invasive Melanoma RiskRegular sunscreen use may reduce the risk of developing melanoma, according to results of a randomized controlled trial that were reported December 6, 2010, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The trial is the first prospective, randomized study to investigate the link between sunscreen use and melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer. Read more here.

The FDA has approved the use of Gardasil to prevent anal cancer linked to HPV. The vaccine targets HPV types 16 and 18, which are linked to cancer, as well as types 6 and 11, strains that cause genital warts. It is already used to help prevent cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers linked to HPV. The vaccine can be given to people between the ages of 9 and 26. Read more here.

New Evidence of Beneficial Effects of Exercise for Cancer Patients, Survivors A new study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that just 15 minutes of exercise may prolong life in prostate cancer patients. Other research shows that exercise reduces cancer-related fatigue in adult survivors.

New Resource: Affordable Care Act and its Impact on Cancer Patients and Families
A new, consumer-friendly guide to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is now available from the American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). The guide is designed to help cancer patients and their families learn how the ACA will help them access the health care they need.

PADOH Announces Creating Healthy Communities Campaign
The Pennsylvania Department of Health's Cardiovascular Health Program (Department) is pleased to announce the 2010-2011 Creating Healthy Communities campaign. This initiative will provide support to implement strategies that improve the health and safety of communities. The Department will fund applicants that implement interventions that focus on policy, environmental and systems change to address sodium reduction initiatives and chronic disease prevention strategies.
The grant activities should focus on access to healthy affordable foods, with an emphasis on sodium reduction initiatives, and access to safe physical activity. The activities must support the goal of implementing policy, environmental and systems change to support healthy and safe communities to prevent and control chronic diseases across the life span.
Mini-grants will be awarded at $5,000 or less. Mini-grant application can be found here.
Applications are due February 18, 2011.
Projects will be awarded and may begin by March 7, 2011

AHRQ Announces New Draft Report for Comment
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Effective Health Care (EHC) Program is pleased to announce that the following draft research review, "Effectiveness of Non-invasive Diagnostic Tests for Breast Abnormalities - An Update to the 2006 Report" is now available and open for comment on the EHC Program Web site until February 10, 2011.
