Genes May Play Role in Pancreatic Cancer Treatments Roughly 43,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the US each year, and fewer than 1 in 5 of these cancers are caught early enough to be surgically removed. Two new treatment theories could offer new hope against this difficult to treat disease. Some new theories involve looking at a persons genes and even looking at BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. Genetic Variants May Affect The Risk of Breast Cancer In Women With BRCA2 Mutations
A recent study published online conducted at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute identifies genetic variants in women with BRCA2 mutations that may increase or decrease a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. These findings are important for further research. Click here to read more.

 National Study Shows Benefit Of Low-Dose CT In Lung Cancer Screening
Launched in 2002, the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) compared chest X-rays and helical CT scans, both used as a means to find lung cancer early. Prior to this trial, the effects of these screening techniques on lung cancer mortality rates had not been determined. The study found 20% fewer lung cancer deaths among those who were screened with low-dose spiral CT than with chest X-Ray.

Testing A "Smarter" Biopsy For Prostate Cancer
Men participating in an NCI Center for Cancer Research clinical trial are offered a more precise biopsy. The approach takes the MRI images as a map for locations of possible cancer and merges those images with real-time ultrasound imaging data. These images help guide the biopsy procedure. For many men, this means a more precise biopsy the first time. Click here to read more.

HHS Releases Strategy For New Warnings And Graphics On Cigarette Packaging
 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services today unveiled a new comprehensive tobacco control strategy that includes proposed new bolder health warnings on cigarette packages and advertisements. Once final, these health warnings on cigarettes and in cigarette advertisements will be the most significant change in more than 25 years. These actions are part of a broader strategy that will help tobacco users quit and prevent children from starting. Click here to read more.
