Less-intensive Treatment Regimen Effective Against Multiple Myeloma
Spanish researchers reported online in The Lancet Oncology that a less intensive therapy with a bortezomib-based regimen was safe for treating newly diagnosed elderly patients with multiple myeloma. A second less intensive therapy was also tested and both regimens led to an 80% response rate. Read more about the findings here.

Palliative Care Improves Survival in Advanced Lung Cancer Patients
Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine found better quality of life and increased survival in patients who received palliative care early in their treatment. More than 150 patients participated in this randomized clinical trial. Although the results of this study are positive, more research still needs to be done as this was the first study of its kind. New CRC Screening Project is Driven by
Practice-Level Data
The
Pennsylvania Department of Health Colorectal Cancer Control Program (PA-CRCCP)has contracted with the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (PAFP) to
coordinate system change in primary care using the PA Improving Performance in
Practice Program (PA IPIP). PA IPIP teaches primary care practices the Chronic
Care Model to improve the care and management of chronic diseases and provides
monthly performance measurement and benchmarking for participating practices.
This new contract represents PA
IPIP's first primary prevention module, screening for colorectal cancer. Through
a coordinated effort with a selected team of expert faculty in Pennsylvania,
this initiative was kicked off with a series of three webinars. Please visit PAFP's website to access the
webinars. CMEs are available to anyone
who can use American Academy of Family Physicians approved credits. Tip sheets
from each presenter also are available. Regularly
scheduled CME webinars will help drive improvement of appropriate CRC screening.
Participating practices report monthly on CRC screening for patients 50-75,
based on the current NCQA quality measure. This initiative is available free to any primary care
practice in Pennsylvania. The help of PAC3 members in spreading the
word would be greatly appreciated. Interested practices can contact Michelle
Seitz, QI Project Manager, at mseitz@pafp.com or 717-885-6929.
