PA Lawmakers Preserve Tobacco Tax
Break instead of Kids' Health: ACS Cancer Action Network Update
Despite a multi-year campaign by health advocates asking state lawmakers to tax
smokeless tobacco and cigars to make them less affordable for our kids, budget
negotiators once again ignored the opportunity to add these products to
Pennsylvania's tax rolls. Cigarettes and cigarillos (small cigars) are taxed at
$1.60 per pack. Why do smokeless tobacco and cigars get a tax break from
our PA lawmakers, when other states tax them?
Unfortunately, led by their state budget negotiators, lawmakers decided
to preserve the tax break for these products instead. They think that
Pennsylvanians don't want new taxes of any kind, not even on products that harm
our youth. You can set them straight by responding to a Call to Action
published by the American Cancer Society or by going to the Society's Cancer
Action Network web page at http://acscan.org/action/pa.
It's time to end
Pennsylvania's tax break on two brightly-packaged products that addict our kids
and cause cancer -- smokeless tobacco and cigars! Visit PAC³ for more on this and other legislation.

Breathing Room: PA DOH Releases New Video Series
This is as real as it gets.
Every smoker has his or her own reasons for picking up that
first cigarette. Stress at home. Stress at work. Social pressure. And every
smoker eventually comes face-to-face with the decision to quit smoking...again for
reasons of his or her own.
Breathing Room follows four real people - Anthony, "G", Jordan
and Sadeyah. Each from different backgrounds, each with their own unique story.
Four people who share one common goal: to quit smoking.
Over a five-week period, cameras captured the ups and downs,
the good and the bad, the successes and setbacks of each of the cast member during his or her individual attempts to go tobacco free.
For more information visit the Breathing Room Documentary or go to the Pennsylvania Department of
Health's website, and click on "Breathing
Room Documentary" on the home page.
