Pennsylvania Department of Health Teams up with
CDC to Fight Colorectal Cancer
In an effort to increase colorectal cancer screening, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) has launched the Colorectal Cancer Control Program
(CRCCP). By providing funding to select states, including Pennsylvania, the
CRCCP aims to increase colorectal cancer screening among men and women age 50
years and older from 63 percent to 80 percent by 2014. The largest aspect of the
new project in Pennsylvania will be a public and provider education effort to
increase the screening rate, which is expected to reduce illness and death
caused by colorectal cancer. According to the CDC, if everyone ages 50 and older
were to be screened for colorectal cancer, approximately 60 percent of deaths
from this cancer could be avoided. For more information go to www.health.state.pa.us. Click on

Sigmoidoscopy Reduces Risk of Colorectal Cancer
A large randomized clinical trial in the UK recently published findings that getting a sigmoidoscopy between the ages of 55 and 64 can reduce incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer. However, this study did not compare this screening test with the colonoscopy. Read more here. |

Raloxifene Causes Fewer Side Effects Than Tamoxifen
Both
drugs have been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer for high risk women
since the STAR trial published it's findings in 2006. Since then, follow-up
data has been collected from over 19,000 women and found that raloxifene has
significantly lower side effects. To read more about this update,
