Communication: The Ongoing Challenge
By Barry Logan, ICIS General Manager
Communication is one of the keys to success of ICIS. Bringing together data from multiple agencies requires a high degree of coordination, collaboration and organization that at times can be extremely challenging. We recognize the importance of communication and continue to find ways to improve. Two key initiatives are currently underway that we hope will significantly improve communications and, in turn, value to our members; meta-data reporting and an ICIS GIS Community.
Clearly reporting on the data available through ICIS is of tremendous value to all of our members. Recent workshops held on the topic of metadata show that accurate reporting of holdings including currency, accuracy and ownership are extremely important. ICIS is revamping its metadata tracking system to better satisfy the requirements of our membership. Improvements will start to appear within the year.
There is a tremendous resource of knowledge and experience within our ICIS family. The ICIS GIS Community initiative will aim to bring our membership together through forums and other tools to share ideas on the challenges and opportunities that exist within ICIS. It is an opportunity to actively involve our members in the on-going development and improvement of ICIS and its value to our membership.
Bettering communication and interacting with our members is another way to support the ICIS vision of collaborative sharing and integration of spatial data for the economic and social benefit of British Columbia .

Rename the ICF and Win!! Suggest a new name for the Integrated Cadastral Fabric (ICF) and you could win a:
Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS and software (value $100) or
One-year subscription to Google Earth Pro (value of $400) for your organization.
One of the primary objectives of ICIS is to create a common cadastral fabric for the province. The ICF has been the name used to refer to cadastral data that has met the standard to be considered part of a common province-wide fabric. Unfortunately, the name is confusing and is not reflective of its collaborative nature nor does it reflect its ICIS lineage. We would like a new name that is easier to understand and reflects the vision of ICIS which is to: ". . . encourage collaborative sharing and integration of spatial data for the economic and social benefit of British Columbia" Please send us your suggestions along with your contact information to info@icisociety.ca by 4:30 PDT, June 30th, 2008 to be eligible.
The ICIS Executive Committee will choose the winning entry in July. In the case of multiple winning entries a draw will be held.
All entries become the property of the Integrated Cadastral Information Society.
