Buying Quality Socks:
What You Need To Know

What Happened To Pantherella?

Primer:
More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About Top-Quality Socks

What Happened To Pantherella?

It's quite simple really.

Nothing happened. Absolutely nothing at all. Since Pantherella was sold a few years back to the H.J.Hall Sock Company, a maker of inexpensive English socks, they have done nothing to keep pace with the improvements being made by the forward-looking Marcoliani of Milan, Italy.

When Marcoliani bought newer, finer, more precise sock knitting machines, H.J. Hall's Pantherella stood idly by. When Marcoliani improved their basic ExtraFine Merino dress sock to 80% natural fibre, Pantherella was content to leave theirs at 70%. When Marcoliani did the same with their 80% Cotton Lisle dress sock, Pantherella again ignored the writing on the wall. Finally, when Marcoliani introduced their exciting 80% Pima Cotton Lisle Wide Rib, Pantherella again did ... abolutely nothing.

When Marcoliani exceeded all that had gone before by introducing 100% ExtraFine Merino stretch dress socks ... and the same in 100% Cotton Lisle ... Pantherella didn't even notice.

And they also didn't notice that Marcoliani had not only increased the natural fiber percentage by more than 12% but that the Italians had also made their dress socks more than an inch longer!

As responsible retailers, we must keep a close eye on changes such as these. Rather than look merely at the window dressing, we took it upon ourselves to do a comparative study.

We learned such interesting things as the fact that Pantherella's 70% Merino/30% Nylon dress sock is not only lacking in natural fiber, but at a mere 17.25" long is almost 2" shorter than Marcoliani's 19" Long, 80% Merino competitor!

In sum, Pantherella has been bested ... and in keeping with our overarching policy of offering only the best, we have upgraded our basic dress sock line to Marcoliani ... just as we did two years ago with the majority of our fashion and novelty socks.

Greetings!

Marcoliani Is
Better Than Pantherella

Learn Why ... at 33+% Off!

I'm going to make this really short ... and very sweet. Pantherella has been falling down on the job. In the miniscule cottage industry of the world's finest clothing, it is the responsibility of artisans to keep pace with quality improvements. I should know - I am one. They should, too - but they haven't.

A few years back, Italy's Marcoliani set out to make a better sock than Pantherella. They have succeeded in all respects. I've just completed a very long article and comparison study which appears below. Articles and studies are nice ... but the proof is in the wearing. Period.

I want to prove it to you. For every two pairs of our Marcoliani Plain Dress Socks you purchase today or tomorrow, I'm going to send you three. No quibbling - Buy 6, Get 9 ... Buy 24, Get 36 - that's 33 1/3% off! Two days only.

But there's more. If you wear one and don't agree with me that it is better than Pantherella, send the unused ones back and you can keep the pair you wore with my compliments!

Best regards,
Alex Kabbaz

As a retailer of many of the world's best socks for decades, I am bombarded with questions about fit, fiber, style, color, length ... the gamut is endless. If I had a buck for every e-mail I've answered or online men's forum inquiry I've handled, I would be retired.

One client, an ardent fan of 100% Pure natural fiber over-the-calf socks who knew I was researching this article recently emoted thus: "You might also mention that most makers who do 100% natural fiber socks do so poorly -- for example, whoever makes ***** 's socks makes them too freaking short!"

"Perhaps most", I thought. "But not all." I know of at least a couple whose socks are not too freaking short. And that's when I decided to compile the questions, write this article, and do a Sock Characteristics Study of two of the better makers' always-available stock offerings.

What I learned was, frankly, rather surprising and resulted in some major supplier changes around here. In the full version of this Sock Quality Article, I cover the following:

    PRIMARY IMPORTANCE
    • Correct Construction and Length: A sock's ability to stay up
    • Tactile Enjoyment: The way the socks feel to the skin
    SECONDARY IMPORTANCE:
    • Appearance: Color and rib style - or the lack thereof
    • Design: If other than a plain color sock, talent of the designer
    • Fiber: Merino, cotton, cashmere, silk, nylon and other synthetics
    • Cushioning: How much foot shock does the sock absorb
    • Temperature: Winter warmth and Summer coolness
    • Moisture: wicking and drying abilities
    • Longevity: Cost per wearing with proper care
    • Source: Availability of a consistent, on demand supply
