"Coming Out of Offense,"

Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.

(Mis)Remembered Words by Brian Volck
In an October 13, 1813 letter to his former political rival, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson described his work on a short book,The Philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth. This was Jefferson's own distillation of gospel texts, in which he meant to include, "the very words only of Jesus," while eliminating all elements Jefferson deemed irrational. Jefferson assumed the parts he found superstitious were simply the result of ignorant men who misremembered or misunderstood Jesus' "pure principles." READ MORE

Endorsing the EP
Over the last few months we've been featuring brief reflections on what it means (and has meant) to endorse the Ekklesia Project. Brent Laytham, Phil Kenneson, Jeff and Nancy Bullock, and Rodney Clapp have shared their wisdom and experience, and now each of us has the opportunity to revisit (or visit for the first time) our own commitment to this network of friends across the ecclesial spectrum and the common work and witness we share.
When our new website launches in a few days, you'll be able to view an updated "endorsing statement." You'll notice that the statement asks particular things of those who make the decision to endorse the EP -- just as friends rightfully ask and expect things of one another.
We hope you'll give prayerful consideration to endorsing (or re-endorsing) the EP. And we hope that the new statement will generate lively discussion -- on the website, at the Gathering -- on what it means to practice friendship in this strange and wonderful fellowship known as the Ekklesia Project. To that end, we plan to carve out some time and space on the first day of the Gathering -- probably after the first plenary and before the pizza dinner -- to invite questions and discussion on what endorsing means. Hope to see you there.

Heather Carlson Completes Term with EP Newsletter
Heather's contribution to this newsletter has been a blessing to the entire Ekklesia Project! We are not big on titles in the EP, but if I could confer one after the fact, Heather served as Associate Editor in Charge of "meet the EP," introducing us to many of our fellow e ndorsers and friends. Living as she does in Fort McMurray in the far northern reaches of Alberta with her husband, Jason, and two young children, attending the Gathering on a regular basis has become a fiscal and logistical challenge, making it difficult for Heather to meet those who are new to the EP community. I am grateful to have worked with her on this newsletter. Those who have appreciated Heather's contributions as much as I have are invited to send her a note expressing your gratitude. And if someone feels called to step into her shoes, I will be equally grateful!

Meet the EP: Hillary Adams

Hillary Adams is preparing to start her junior year as an undergraduate student at Butler University. She was born and raised at Englewood Christian Church located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and continues to call it home. She studies Elementary Education, and is capable of babbling about her work for hours on end to anyone kind enough to listen. She spends her days taking classes, swing/ballroom dancing, hiking, gardening in her vegetable and black raspberry gardens, and working at St. Mary's Child Center as a substitute teacher. While she makes virtually no money, the endless hugs, compliments, and words of inspiration from four-year olds make it worth it.
Hillary discovered the Ekklesia Project through her friends at Englewood in 2005. Her mother, Susan Adams, talked about the exciting conversations so much that Hillary was determined to be part of it. She attended her first Gathering in 2009, and the summer of 2011 will be her third Gathering. Hillary is also very passionate about social justice, urban gardening, the slow food movement, and local economy. The topic of immigration is very near to her heart due to the growing population of Hispanic immigrants to Indianapolis, and many of them are in her classroom. The EP has become a great outlet for conversation, developing ideas, and forming relationships within the Kingdom. |
New EP Website Coming
In a few days our new website will launch! We are immensely grateful to Dayspring Technologies, whose staff includes members of Grace Fellowship Community Church and Redeemer Community Church in San Francisco. Dayspring has done the considerable work of updating our site as a pro bono gift to the EP.
Among the new features will be better navigability, online registration for the Gathering, a newsletter archive, a redesigned EP logo, and the ability to locate fellow EPers living near you. We are also working to interface our website, newsletter and Facebook page in a manner that will enhance our overall sense of community. We are deeply grateful to Chi-Ming Chien (EP Board Member and Dayspring principal), Young-Ki Kim (project team leader), and our other friends at Dayspring for their generosity!
