OSHA's new I2P2 Standard is on the way.......

OSHA Administrator David Michaels outlined some of the upcoming goals and priorities for OSHA. He made it clear that OSHA is looking to reinvent itself in some ways to become a stronger and more relevant agency with more personnel in enforcement, higher fines and a greater emphasis on prevention across all industries.

The Injury and Illness Prevention Program (I2P2) was said to be at the top of OSHA Administrator Dr. David Michael's priority list. If you are unfamiliar with the program, it would require employers to find and fix hazards, and plan, implement, evaluate and improve workplace processes and activities in the interest of protecting workers' safety and health.

Risk Management in the New Year

The risk management environment at the beginning of 2011 is characterized by the sluggish economy, the shift in Congress and health care reform laws.  Operating with limited resources and regulatory uncertainty poses challenges for risk managers. However, stable insurance pricing allows risk managers to concentrate less on insurance negotiation and more on the prioritization of loss prevention programs, business continuity plans and risk management initiatives.  This year, Eastern Michigan Agencies resources will also be concentrated on Safety & Risk Management Programs that address "Total Cost of Risk" and helping our clients improve long term profitability and safety initiatives.

Discrimination Suits On The Rise

Public awareness of employment discrimination has risen as employers experienced a surge of charges - the number of charges filed in fiscal year 2010 was 7.1 percent higher than fiscal year 2009, a substantial jump. For the first time, retaliation charges surpassed race as the most frequently filed charge. The increase in charges may be due to several factors, including economic conditions, increased diversity and demographic shifts in the work force, improvements in the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commissions's intake practices and greater accessibility to the public. Employers should respond by using extreme caution in the way the comply with the law, their internal systems and the way they react to employee complaints.
