Private Companies: Taking Risks With Risk?

What if you were asked, "Which one loss event would cause the most financial damage to your company?" How would you respond?

As part of an Industry Risk Survey, 451 U.S. private company executives were asked this question about the risks covered by the survey. Their top four responses were:

  • Employment practices liability (36%)
  • Workplace crime (18%)
  • Cyber liability (15%)
  • Workplace violence (11%)

Rounding out the remaining 20% of responses were a lawsuit concerning errors and omissions; a lawsuit by a retiree or employee over benefits; a lawsuit filed by partners, investors or shareholders; and a kidnap/ransom or extortion incident.

Do you Assume Too Much Risk?

The survey, conducted in February, also showed that insurance purchase rates among private companies are fairly low - only 1 in 4 private companies buy management liability, professional liability or crime insurance policies. This is true even when the executives seem to understand the gravity of certain exposures - in particular, employment practices liability (EPL) and workplace fraud and, to a somewhat lesser extent, electronic security breaches and workplace violence.

The survey suggests that many companies have been reducing costs during a difficult economic climate by cutting back on insurance protection - even when it means assuming more risk.

A copy of the survey, Taking Risks With Risk, which offers an in-depth look at more findings is available by simply emailing Jeff Mattes at jmattes@emainsurance.com. WHY DO YOU NEED INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL COVERAGE?

International travel and relocation have become common, if not routine for both groups and individuals from all nationalities. Unfortunately, many travelers are misinformed or unfamiliar with how their primary health insurance plan will actually pay a claim incurred outside the United States. The fact is: Most, if not all, U.S. based health plans DO NOT provide any of the following services in the event of an emergency abroad:

  • 24-hour multilingual Worldwide Services.
  • Instant physician and hospital referrals anywhere in the world.
  • Guaranteed payment and coordination of benefits to medical facilities worldwide.
  • Immediate dispatch and coordination of Emergency Medical Evacuation services (anytime anywhere).
  • Repatriation of Remains and Emergency Reunion.
  • Peace of Mind (all the above services and benefits are included).

Finally, all United States passports clearly state that persons considering foreign travel should determine what health insurance coverage, if any, they have while outside the United States. It further states that Medicare does not cover health care costs outside the United States.

Previously, there was no easy way to create, print, distribute and grade quizzes. With the upgrades, the quizzes and answer sheets for all Safety courses, including the new Spanish courses, have been converted to hard copy (Word documents). Currently, these quizzes can be provided to you upon request and within the quarter, we'll make these quizzes available to you in your online partner resources.
