 Prescription for a deadly addiction Poisonings have quickly become the fastest-growing cause of accidental death in the United States. During National Safety Month 2008, the National Safety Council is taking one week to focus on poison prevention.
Most poisoning victims, however, are not children ingesting household chemicals - they are working-age adults abusing prescription medication.
Painkillers seemingly have become the drug of choice among abusers, with an estimated 2.5 million people using them for nonmedical purposes and a third of all poisoning deaths in 2004 attributed to them. |
