Last month we talked about the increased need for tax planning due to federal tax law planning.  This month we'll address what exactly estate planning is.

Estate planning is merely the process and documents involved in determining how your assets will be distributed after your death, including who will inherit, who will control distribution of your assets, and when your beneficiaries will receive your assets.  While most of us do not like to think about dying, we all want to care for our families when the unpleasant inevitable occurs, and estate planning allows us to do just that.

The first step in creating an estate plan is to account for all of your property, including real estate, personal property, life insurance, bank accounts, retirement plans, securities, and business interests.  You may be surprised at how much you have!  Once you have the big picture of what is in your estate, you can make decisions more easily about who should inherit your assets and how.
