The American cockroach is commonly found outdoors living in underground areas such as plumbing and ground cover like mulch and other kinds of debris.  Your best defense is to eliminate the conducive conditions.  The most common condition is moisture up close to the house.  So pull back the mulch 3 to 4 inches and cut shrubs and trees off of the structure.  Most importantly, check irrigation so that it's not spraying the house and rain gutters.  Be sure the water is draining away from the foundation and no leaks.  The best defense is to have two to three feet of airspace between the landscape and the structure.  By providing this space you can easily inspect the structure for all types of problems, such as roaches, ants, termites, mold, and water damage.  So get out early in the morning before the heat and correct these conducive conditions.  Most of the cockroaches found in the house now will be carried in, with groceries, in bags, boxes, and especially live plants.  This is where R.H. Give Kids the World Night

The Kiwanis Club of Avalon Park volunteered at Give Kids the World on Wednesday, May 26th helping with Kids Night Out.  This is where the parents get a break from the daily constant care and can relax, while their kids, both those with health issues as well as those siblings that are there with the families can have some fun.  The kids started with putt-putt or video games and then were treated to chicken fingers and fries for dinner.  For dessert they have grape ice pops or cookies.  Next was time for Village Idol, their version of American Idol.  What a blast, there were over 15 kids that got a chance to perform on stage-some singing, some dancing and even a pirate show.  Seven other kids had the chance to be the judges.  The kids all had a blast, as did the volunteers.  They can't wait for us to come back and everyone that went can't wait to go back.
