USFSP Mourns Loss of Two Professors

Bob Hall, professor emeritus of English, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1. He was 78.

John Conlon, adjunct professor of English, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 31. He was 66.

Festival of the Genome Begins October 20
The USFSP Festival of the Genome features a series of five public lectures by nationally and internationally renowned speakers exploring the impact of DNA and the genomics revolution on science and society from a variety of perspectives.

All lectures begin at 7 p.m. and take place in the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. A reception will begin prior to each lecture at 6 p.m. This program is presented by the Division of Academic Affairs. For more information, contact genome2011@usfsp.edu.

October 20: The Human Genome: 10 Years and 247 Days Later with Dr. Gary Litman, Andrew and Ann Hines Professor and Vice Chairman of Pediatrics at USF Health, Distinguished University Professor

USFSP Debuts in U.S. News and World Report  
Among public regional universities in the South, USF St. Petersburg ranks at #36 - an impressive placement for the university's debut ranking in U.S. News and World Report's Best Colleges. The 2012 edition of the rankings were released Sept. 13.

Art and Science Converge with Dali Lecture Series
A series of lectures led by Deby Cassill, USFSP professor of biology, and Peter Tush, curator of education at the Dali Museum, merge concepts in art and science through discussions on selected pieces of Salvador Dali's work.

The next lecture, Dali and Paranoia, takes place Thursday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in the Dali Museum theater, 1 Dali Blvd.

Journalist Edwin Black Discusses Oil Dependency

Edwin Black is an award-winning, New York Times bestselling and international investigative author. His books are available in 14 languages and 65 countries.

 

Black will discuss oil dependency in America during a public lecture at noon on Monday, Oct. 17 in Davis Hall, Room 130. 

 

His work focuses on genocide and hate, corporate criminality and corruption, governmental misconduct, academic fraud, philanthropic abuse, oil addiction, alternative energy and historical investigation.

 

Black's lecture at USFSP is presented by the Bishop Center and the Office of Student Leadership Development and Programming. 

College of Business Offers Executive Education
The USFSP College of Business is offering three executive education programs for the fall semester. Sessions cover topics such as leadership, nonprofit governing and negotiation.

Holocaust Survivor George Salton Discusses Memoir
George Lucius Salton will discuss his memoir, The 23rd Psalm, in which he recounts his remarkable Holocaust survival story. His public lecture, presented by the USFSP Honors Program and the Florida Holocaust Museum, begins at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Davis Hall, Room 130.

Salton speaks on Jewish life in Nazi occupied Poland, Jewish life in the ghetto, surviving ten Nazi concentration camps, liberation and his life after the Holocaust.

USFSP Professors Present at Times Festival of Reading
USFSP professors presenting at the 2011 St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading include Julie Armstrong, Ray Arsenault, Mark Durand and Tony Silvia. Additionally, Laurens Grant, producer of the Freedom Riders documentary based on Arsenault's book, and former Freedom Riders David Myers, Winonah Myers and Kredelle Petway will participate in Arsenault's presentation.

The festival takes place at USFSP on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A schedule will be available at the event and in the Oct. 16 issue of the St. Petersburg Times.

 
Jazz Musicians Perform at Workshop
Members of the Al Downing Jazz Association will perform and discuss their music during a public workshop performance on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The event will be in the courtyard at the USFSP Snell and Williams Houses.

USFSP Featured in Two University Beat Stories
On radio and television, USFSP programs and students were featured on the WUSF program, University Beat. One story highlights the Department of Journalism's Neighborhood News Bureau and the town hall students hosted with St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster. Another story features USFSP students Reuben Pressman and Hunter Payne and the organization they started, Swings Tampa Bay.

The University Beat radio program for the week of Oct. 16-22 will preview the St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading and feature interviews with USFSP professors Julie Armstrong and Mark Durand. 
 
LeaderSpeak Presents a Talk with Mayor Foster
St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster will be the featured speaker at the next LeaderSpeak program presented by the Office of Student Leadership Development and Programming.

Mayor Foster's public talk takes place Thursday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. in Davis Hall, Room 130.

Prospective Students Welcome at Fall Open House
Students interested in bachelor's and master's degree programs at USFSP are invited to attend the Fall Open House on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. to noon.

 
 
Hallock Takes Students to Bartram Conference
Thomas Hallock, USFSP associate professor of English and president of the Bartram Trail Conference (BTC), will take four students to the biennial Bartram Trail Conference in Macon, Georgia from Oct 21-23.

Founded in 1976, the BTC is dedicated to marking the path and preserving the legacy of William Bartram, whose 1791 Travels is a classic of American, environmental, and southern literature. Hallock's book, William Bartram, the Search for Nature's Design, was published in 2010.

 
USFSP Hosts Fulbright Scholar from Morocco
Raja Benchekroun is teaching Arabic at USFSP for the 2011-2012 academic year while also taking classes through the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Program.

She earned her bachelor's degree in English studies and a master's degree in communication studies from the University of Caddi Ayyad. She earned language teaching certificates from the British council in Morocco.

Scourfield McLauchlan Plans 2012 RTWH Course
Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan, associate professor of political science,
will share her presidential campaigning expertise with her students during her third Road to the White House course, scheduled for the spring 2012 term. Students will intern with a presidential campaign throughout the primary season.

Scourfield McLauchlan has worked on six presidential campaigns and incorporates her presidential campaign expertise in the classroom.

Carvalho Knighton Honored by Valdosta State
Kathy Carvalho Knighton, associate professor of chemistry, will receive the Outstanding Alumna Award from the College of Arts and Sciences at Valdosta State University, her alma mater. Carvalho Knighton received her bachelor's degree from the university and will return with her family to receive the award on Oct. 13. 
USFSP Added as Site for LSAT, ACT and SAT 
USFSP is available as a site for college and law school entrance exams for the first time, providing access for students looking to take these exams in St. Petersburg.

More than 50 people took the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) at USFSP on Saturday, Oct. 1. USFSP is only the second site in St. Petersburg to host the LSAT. The university will host the SAT and ACT college entrance exams on Nov. 5 and Dec. 10, respectively.

Judy Mitchell Appointed to USFSP Campus Board
Judy Mitchell, the recently retired president of Peter R. Brown Construction, Inc., has been appointed to a four-year term on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Campus Board.

"This is such an exciting time to join the USFSP Campus Board," Mitchell said. "This university's impact and presence in the community continues to grow and I look forward to contributing to that effort as a board member."

New Faces of USFSP Administration

Serge W. Desir, the new Associate Director of Admissions and Outreach, brings a great deal of admissions and recruitment experience to USFSP. Prior to joining USFSP, Desir served for more than seven years as the Senior Assistant Director in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Central Florida. Prior to UCF, he worked in the admissions office at USF Tampa. Desir joined USFSP on August 15.

Ron Sheehy, the new Director of International Affairs, is leading the university's increased focus on internationalizing curricula, research and the overall student experience. Prior to joining USFSP, Sheehy served as the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morehouse College, his alma mater, and led the university's plan to increase global competence among students. His career as a molecular biologist and university administrator has spanned four decades in a variety of college, university and institutional settings. Sheehy joined USFSP on September 1.

Julie Wong, the new Chief Student Affairs officer, leads the university's focus on creating and maintaining a university experience that promotes and celebrates student engagement. Prior to joining USFSP, Wong served as the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has led student affairs in various capacities at University of Texas at El Paso, Sixth College at the University of California, San Diego and Chapman University. Wong joined USFSP on August 1.
