University Breaks Ground on Student Center
USFSP hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Monday, April 11 for the Multipurpose Student Center. The 81,000 square-foot facility will include dining services, a ballroom, meeting spaces and a six-story residence hall that will add nearly 200 new student residents to downtown St. Petersburg.

Symposium Showcases Student Research
Undergraduate and graduate students displayed and discussed their research projects on topics within the fields of education, psychology, biochemistry, biomedical science, criminology, environmental science and journalism at the eighth annual research symposium on April 21. One of several events during the annual Research Month, the event showcased scholarly work of students and faculty.

USFSP students have the opportunity to participate in a wide breadth of faculty-led and mentored research. In the last three years, the university's research funding has more than tripled to $4.3 million, broadening opportunities for student involvement with research.
K-16 Initiatives Expands with Federal Grant
With a five-year, $2.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the team at the K-16 Educational Initiatives in the College of Education have set out to change the standards of transition student education.

Led by USFSP, a consortium is working with nine Florida colleges and universities to create model programs that will lead to a credential for students with intellectual disabilities and provide access to a postsecondary institution.

PBS Airs Freedom Riders Documentary May 16
The American Experience Freedom Riders documentary is scheduled to premiere on PBS stations nationwide on May 16. The documentary, produced by Stanley Nelson, is based on the book, Freedom Riders, by Ray Arsenault, the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History at USFSP.

In advance of the premiere on PBS, The Oprah Winfrey Show is scheduled to air an episode about the Freedom Riders on May 4 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides.

Library Hosts Survivors Speak Exhibit
For the 10th consecutive year, Suncoast Center, Inc. and partners have collaborated to present Survivors Speak, an exhibit designed to increase awareness, understanding, and prevention of the horrific trauma of sexual violence.

The exhibit of artwork crafted by clients of all ages from the Suncoast Center's Trauma Services program will be on display at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Lirbrary until April 29. 
Students Assist Community with Tax Returns
On Tuesdays evenings during this year's tax season, accounting student Tara Dimartino was at her local YMCA helping her neighbors file their taxes through the free IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Dimartino was one of 24 College of Business students that trained on the IRS tax preparation and software procedures to prepare taxes through VITA.

STREAMS Welcomes Third Cohort of Scholars
Now in its third year of offering mentoring and scholarships to underrepresented students in the sciences, the STREAMS program in the College of Arts and Sciences and USF College of Marine Science welcomed 14 new scholars to the program at a reception April 18.

STREAMS, which stands for Supporting Talented and Remarkable Environmental And Marine Science Students Scholarship Program, offers professional, academic and peer mentoring along with a scholarship to the program's students, all of which are majoring in environmental science and policy.

Commencement Honors Spring 2011 Graduates
Many of the Spring 2011 graduates will participate in the university's commencement ceremony Sunday, May 8 at 6 p.m. at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater. Nearly 400 students have applied to receive degrees for Spring 2011.

Amanda Emery, a College of Business student, will receive both the King-O'Neal and the Outstanding Graduate awards. Four students will graduate as U.S. Army Commissioned Officers, all as 2nd Lieutenants. Sixty-six students will graduate with honors. 
COB and SEI Alliance Host Love of Cities Event
The College of Business and the Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation Alliance have partnered with a number of groups to host For the Love of St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Campus Activities Center.

Participants are invited to
share what they already love about the City of St. Petersburg and develop simple ways to make the city more lovable for all. The event is based on themes explored in local author Peter Kageyama's new book, For the Love of Cities.

Waterfront Hosts Pool Safety Event
The Waterfront program at USFSP is partnering with Florida Safe Pools, All Children's Hospital and St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue to host the H2O Expo on Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The free event will educate and provide resources for the prevention of child drownings. There will be free food and a variety of activities. Brooke Bennett, Olympic gold-medal swimmer, will attend.

National Report Highlights Durand's Work
The National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorder (NPDC on ASD) released a national report identifying 24 evidence-based practices for working effectively with individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Two of these practices - functional behavioral assessment and functional communication training - were pioneered by V. Mark Durand, professor of psychology at USFSP.

Site Features Student's Graphic Design Work
Graphic design senior Alexander Kusminov entered a label design contest presented by Tampa-based brewery Cigar City Brewing for the design of one of their products. He developed the design while interning with advertising firm Chappel Roberts. The design contest winner will be announced in June.

Kusminov's design for Cigar City Brewing was showcased in the student spotlight on the design web site, The Dieline.

Girl Scouts Honor Chancellor Sullivan
Regional Chancellor Margaret Sullivan was honored March 22 as a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida at their 10th annual luncheon. The luncheon honors women who have achieved success in their chosen fields and who serve as role models for girls and young women in the community.
Mormino Receives Hanna Award
Gary Mormino, the Frank E. Duckwall Professor of History, received the Alfred J. Hanna Award from Rollins College in recognition of his contributions to the study and understanding of Florida.

Previous award recipients include Michael Gannon and Stetson Kennedy.

Town and Gown Presents Annual Gifts
Town and Gown, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote understanding and friendship between the university and the community, presented annual awards to USFSP at the group's April 15 meeting. The gifts include a portable sound system for Harbor Hall, safety equipment for USFSP watercraft and support for the Florida Studies program.

The group also elected officers for 2011-2012:

Transformers Exhibit Explores Brand History
Witness the evolution of this captivating brand of intricate toys and memorable characters.  Over 100 Transformers toys spanning the last 30 years are in this student-produced display, including several rarities and items from around the globe. In addition, there is a collection of paraphernalia and other assorted products that have appeared in conjunction with the Transformers brand over the years.

The exhibit will be on display until May 19 at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library.
