Masters Degree Open House
Prospective students interested in pursuing one of the 10 masters degree programs at USF St. Petersburg are invited to attend the Masters Degree Open House on Saturday, March 5 from 2 to 5 p.m.
Program advisors, faculty members and college deans will be available to discuss programs, application processes, and financial aid. This event is free and open to the public.

Progress Energy Foundation Gift Benefits Science and Education Initiatives
The $185,000 gift from the Progress Energy Foundation will be directed to three projects within the USF System. At USF St. Petersburg, the SunBay Digital Mathematics Project will receive a $125,000 gift and the C-SPACE Programs and Outreach Initiatives will receive $50,000.

Chamber Honors Heller with Government Award
The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce presented the C.W. "Bill" Young Award to the Honorable H. William "Bill" Heller at the 112th annual meeting of the Chamber on Thursday, Feb. 3. The award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions in governmental service. |

Library Displays Student Graphic Design Work
When USF St. Petersburg student Thomas Weigel began his first semester in the graphic design program, he didn't know he would spend months studying the image of a spray paint can. Weigel's professor, Matt Normand, wanted him to create over 180 images of a single object that would give him the tools he needed to create a final poster for the Icon and Meaning project on display in the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library.
Normand designed the project for students to go beyond the visual representation of an object and learn how to create a complex theme for a finished product.

Federal Grant Funds TRIO Support Services
Students participating in the new grant-funded TRIO Student Support Services will receive free academic and personal support as of the spring 2011 semester to help them achieve their educational and professional goals. The grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
"At the heart of the program is connecting TRIO Student Support Services with student mentors to provide social and academic support," said Diane McKinstry, director of student achievement at USFSP. "We're accepting applications for student mentors and participants in the program."

Scholar Discusses Muslims in America
Zahid Bukhari, president of the Islamic Circle of North America, will lead a discussion titled, "Muslims in the American Public Square." He previously directed the American Muslim Studies Program and was a Fellow at the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University. Bukhari's research focuses on religion and politics in the United States and South Asia. This program is presented by the Honors Program.

Forum Explores Human Performance Sector
The next Walgreens Bayside Business Forum on March 9 will explore how the health and wellness field can provide benefits beyond increased quality of life - it has also been identified as a source of quality, sustainable jobs for Tampa Bay. The presentation titled, "Tampa Bay's Emerging Health and Human Performance Sector," will feature a discussion led by Tampa Bay Partnership Business Intelligence Officer Dave Sobush.

Students Win 2nd Place in Regional Competition
 A team of USFSP accounting students took second place among 11 teams in the Best Practices competition at the Beta Alpha Psi honor society's southeast regional conference. Students exemplified the competition topic, "Helping Others Understand the Financial Profession," in the fall 2010 semester when they presented to more than 300 high school students on the topic of careers in accounting. For the regional competition, the students presented the results of their sessions with the high school students to earn 2nd place in the competition. The student winners were Ivan Bengston, Jessica Brown, Cuong Ly and Anthony Hunter. The conference was held Feb. 25-27 in Charlotte, NC. |

SEAS Dedicates Second Bayboro Watergoat
The Student Environmental Awareness Society at USF St. Petersburg recently received a $3,500 Bay Mini-Grant from the Tampa Bay Estuary program for the installation and maintenance of a 75-foot watergoat that will help keep trash and pollutants from the city out of Tampa Bay.
The new watergoat was installed by New Earth Industries, Inc. on Thursday, Feb. 4 along the northern edge of Bayboro Harbor where a city run-off pipe flows water into the bay.
