The student experience at USF St. Petersburg, already enlivened by a growing and diverse population of more than 6,000 students, will benefit from a student center that received final approval from the Florida Board of Governors Thursday, Dec. 2.

Harvard Jolly Gift Supports COB Building
The College of Business at USF St. Petersburg received a gift from Harvard Jolly Architecture, a St. Petersburg-based firm, in support of the college's campaign to construct a new building.
A new home for the College of Business is a fundraising priority for USFSP and the gift from Harvard Jolly helps the college realize this goal.

USFSP Honors Fall 2010 Graduates
USF St. Petersburg will have more than 240 students participate in the Fall 2010 Commencement on Sunday, Dec. 12. The university expects to confer degrees for 44 graduate students and 199 undergraduate students.
Two students earned the King O'Neal Award, an honor given to graduates with a 4.0 grade point average. The King O'Neal Scholars are Kara Kennedy and Olexiy Lisin. Kennedy will receive a BA in finance and Lisin will receive a BS in management information systems. The Outstanding Graduate Award winner is Chelsea Lindsley. She will receive her BA in Journalism and Media Studies.

McKee Conducts Voter Behavior Study
A study led by Seth C. McKee, associate professor of political science, finds many voters behaved strategically in Florida's three-way U.S. Senate race.
In order to detect evidence of strategic voting the survey was designed to capture voters' sincere candidate preferences along with their stated vote choice.

Dardenne Presents Research in Shanghai
Robert Dardenne, Journalism and Media Studies Department chair, presented a paper on China's image in U.S. newspapers at the Fourth World Forum on China Studies held in Shanghai, Pudong, People's Republic of China from Nov. 5-8.
Dardenne's presentation, "Emerging Soft Power, Persistent Hard Image: China Constructed in Select U.S. Newspapers," showed how China's rise as an influential nation with a growing economy has been portrayed in the American press since 2006.

NSF Grant Funds Research in Ethiopia
 Kathryn Weedman Arthur, assistant professor of anthropology, received a $258,639 grant from the National Science Foundation to study the history of endogamous hereditary groups among the Gamo people of southern Ethiopia. Weedman Arthur is the principal investigator and John Arthur, associate professor of anthropology, is a co-investigator.
The Arthurs will travel to Ethiopia during the summers of 2011 and 2012 with undergraduate students from USFSP to conduct field research.

Students Place Third in Regional Ethics Bowl
 The USFSP Ethics Bowl team placed third in the 7th Annual Southeast Regional Ethics Bowl, held Saturday, Nov. 13 in Largo. The six undergraduates who represented USFSP in four rounds of competition include Taylor Gaudens, Heather Hill, Kevin McCarty, Kelsie McClain, Daniel McDonald and Arielle Stevenson.

Smith Contributes to Child Health Report
Richard Smith, associate professor of economics, analyzed data for the Child Health and Healthcare Quality in Florida Chartbook: A Focus on Childhood Obesity. This comprehensive report focuses on the quality of healthcare received by children and youth in Florida with an emphasis on childhood obesity. The new chapter Smith worked on provides a look at health status and behaviors based on weight status and a qualitative analysis of childhood obesity prevention efforts in Florida.

Florida Studies Student Wins Essay Award
Lois Ricciardi, a graduate student in the Florida Studies program, is the third USFSP student in four years to win the Leland M. Hawes Prize from the Tampa Bay History Center. The award honors the outstanding graduate essay in the field of Florida history.

Accounting Students Present to High Schools
Six members of USF St. Petersburg's accounting honor society, Beta Alpha Psi, volunteered during the Great American Teach-In.
The students worked with two accounting professionals to meet with students in two local high schools to discuss careers in accounting. The honor society members presented to more than 220 high school students at Lakewood High School and St. Petersburg High School.

Student-Awarded Grant Supports Legal Services
Members of the Student Philanthropy Board in Morgan Gresham's Technical Writing class awarded a $5,000 grant to Gulf Coast Legal Services in support of the agency's legal assistance and outreach to mobile home residents. The grant, awarded Monday, Dec. 6, supports the assistance and education of residents in regards to hurricane preparedness.
The Student Philanthropy Boards are supported through the federal Learn and Serve America grant. Students research community needs to determine funding possibilities. Visit the Student Philanthropy Board web site to learn more about the program.

Science Education Students Work With U.S.G.S.
An article published by the U.S. Geological Survey in November highlights work done by students in a Physical and Earth Science Education class in the College of Education. Under the guidance of Malcolm Butler, associate professor of education, the students produced science multimedia presentations to share with other teachers.
The class partnered with the U.S.G.S to develop the presentations.
