Executive Forum Brings CEOs to USF St. Pete
Executive Forum On Tuesday, Sept. 14 leaders from companies such as Progress Energy Florida, Raymond James, Walgreens, Times Publishing Company and area hospitals will participate in focused panel discussions on issues facing today's companies.
 
The Executive Forum, an event with three scheduled panels, is free and open to the public. Executives from various fields will discuss three topics:
 
  • Economics of Health Care (11 a.m.)
  • Corporate Social Responsibility in a Global Environment (2 p.m.)
  • Leadership in a Dynamic Economic Climate (6 p.m.)

Loftus Discusses Prosecution of Genocide
The Debbie and Brent Sembler Florida Holocaust Museum Lecture presents "Prosecuting Genocide: From Nuremberg to Darfur," by John Loftus, former president of the Florida Holocaust Museum.

The lecture, co-sponsored by the Honors Program, is Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. in Davis Hall, Room 130. A reception hosted by the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library will follow.

Local Teachers Begin Digital Math Program
Digital Math Cohort Eleven middle school mathematics teachers from Pinellas County schools developed technology-based lessons this summer to help effectively teach every child that enters their classrooms.

Their work this summer was part of a five-course certificate in Digital Mathematics at the College of Education, and involved approaching mathematics problem solving with computer applications, web resources and group collaboration.

Renovated Docks Expand Waterfront Recreation
The university sailing team can hold bigger practices and host the highest level of collegiate and high school national competitions thanks to the completed renovation of the Waterfront docks.
 
The summer renovation of the docks added a kayak and canoe ramp, space for 30 Flying Junior Sailing dinghies, and slips for seven larger sailboats. Plans for a ceremonial grand opening are underway. Check the Waterfront web site for updates.

Dorsey Selected as Environmental Ambassador
Joseph Dorsey, assistant professor of environmental policy, has been selected as a Coastal Environmental Justice Community Ambassador by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency - Gulf of Mexico Alliance.
 
As an ambassador, Dorsey will support efforts to engage and work with vulnerable populations, populations that pose the greatest risk of environmental impacts.

Student Pair Studies Health & Culture in India
Nora & Ryan in India Seniors Nora Gaunt and Ryan Mitchell spent five weeks in India this summer, participating in an anthropological field school and researching the environmental impacts of tourism.

They spent most of their time in the state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India where they volunteered in health clinics and learned about the cultural and religious complexity of northern India.

McLauchlan Teaches in Moldova with Fulbright
Judithanne Scourfield McLauchlan, associate professor of political science and director of the Center for Civic Engagement, is teaching at the Free University of Moldova in Chisinau, Moldova during the fall 2010 semester as a Fulbright Scholar.

McLauchlan is teaching Introduction to Law and Politics and U.S. Constitutional Law. Read updates about her experience on her blog.

Just before her departure, McLauchlan received an appointment to the Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. Her commissioner bio is available here.
St. Petersburg Times Publishes Student Essay
Chris Klug, a Florida Studies graduate student, wrote an essay on his experience as an oil spill clean-up crew foreman on the shores of Pensacola this summer.

The St. Petersburg Times published his first-hand account of the experience in the Sunday, Aug. 8 edition of the Perspectives section.

McHale Discusses Research at World Conference
Jamie McHale, professor of psychology, discussed coparenting in multigenerational family systems at this summer's meeting of the World Association for Infant Mental Health.
 
The plenary session focused on McHale's recently completed work on the extended family relationships of incarcerated mothers with preschool-aged children cared for by relatives in the mother's absence.
Beta Alpha Psi Students Earn Awards
Three members of USFSP's accounting honor society attended the society's international conference in California this summer. Student Maryna Gehrsitz (pictured far right) was part of the winning team of the conference's business consulting competition. The USFSP Beta Alpha Psi chapter will receive $1000 for her win.

The chapter received an overall Superior rating.
