BEASY engineers have recently attended two of the major aerospace conferences and presented the latest developments in
BEASY's crack growth and corrosion simulation software.

Sharon Mellings recently attended ICAF 2011 in Montreal and presented a poster paper entitled "Improved Stress Intensity Factor Calculation in Riveted Panel Type Structures using Numerical Simulations".
This described some recent work to investigate the effect, on the Stress Intensity Factors and crack growth paths, of load transfer between different members in riveted airframe structures. This incorporated complex loading, including contact conditions at the rivet holes, and predicted the changes in the load path when a growing crack causes a rivet to completely cease transferring load.

Tom Curtin attended the 2011 Aircraft Airworthiness & Sustainability Conference (the new name for the Aging Aircraft conference) with Dick Dippery. They presented the latest version of BEASY's fracture mechanics simulation solutions which have major applications in the assessment of crack like defects and damage tolerance analysis.
BEASY is now more closely integrated with industry leading Finite Element (FEM) software packages such as PATRAN, ABAQUS and ANSYS to enable more rapid model building.
The enhanced BEASY FEM Interfaces provide users with the tools to create BEASY models from finite element models and systems. The BEASY mesh and loading for the whole model (or part/sub model) can be created from FEM results sets or models. The BEASY results can also be easily viewed in the FEM modeling environment.

Another focus of BEASY's presentation at the conference was corrosion.
It was estimated a few years ago that the cost of corrosion to the US aircraft industry was approximately $2.2 billion, in addition there is the consequential costs of unplanned maintenance. Therefore another focus of their presentation was the recently developed corrosion modeling software which enables engineers to quickly assess the corrosion risk for structural components (such as aircraft or vehicles) and the effectiveness of surface protection systems.
