BEASY software & modelling services

March 2012

BEASY FRACTURE NEWSLETTER

BEASY will be exhibiting at the 2012 Aircraft Airworthiness & Sustainability Conference in Baltimore this April, and presenting latest developments in its Crack Growth simulation software and the newly launched Corrosion Manager software for aircraft structures.

 BEASY Software Services & Modeling

BEASY Fatigue and Crack Growth software is extensively used to perform 3D crack growth simulations to support structural life extension decisions. Sophisticated analysis algorithms have been developed to investigate crack growth behaviour in complex loading environments (eg residual stress, fretting fatigue, and thermal).

BEASY software is fully compatible with MSC PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, and ANSYS.

With BEASY Corrosion Manager software engineers can quickly assess the risk to components and structures of corrosion, and the effectiveness of surface protection systems.

The software enables engineers to replace the "find it and fix it" method with an approach built on the underlying fundamentals of the corrosion process, thereby providing the ability to effectively predict its behaviour.

Crack Growth Simulation With Residual Stresses

A paper addressing the effects of residual stresses was presented at the recent ASIP 2011 conference in San Antonio, TX.

Cracks were found on wing attachment lugs before the predicted fatigue life was reached in a full scale fatigue test. Laser Shock Peening (LSP) was proposed as a retrofit solution in order to reduce crack initiation and extend fatigue life. LSP is a surface treatment that imparts surface compressive residual stresses to improve the fatigue life of metallic components.

The ASIP paper discusses the numerical modelling studies, using BEASY, carried out to understand the benefit of using LSP to improve fatigue life. Experimental tests Laser Shock Peeningranging from coupon level to sub-component frames were conducted to determine the benefit of LSP.  The test data was then compared to the numerical results in a "blind" study to determine if numerical simulation could be used to improved life prediction methods for complex parts where LSP was used as a structural retrofit on a wing attachment lug.

The results demonstrated that residual stress field effects could be accurately incorporated into life prediction methodology.
