Tunneling Under Roadway Reduces Traffic Interruptions During 13-Month Long Drainage Project in Glendale, AZ

In past years, residents along the two mile route from 47th to 63rd avenues had to rely on sandbags to protect their property during heavy rains.  At a cost of $15.8 million, the Northern Avenue Drainage Project is changing all that.

SSC Construction SiteUnder contract for Sundt Corporation, SSC began hand tunneling 130' of 82" steel casing under the intersection at 59th Avenue & Northern in July of 2009.  This trenchless installation process allowed traffic to continue to flow through the intersection and local businesses to continue to operate as normally as possible.

While restricting construction to one lane has been good for the public, it did cause a few challenges for the SSC crew.  Existing underground utility conflicts such as a 12" HP gas line to the south and an 8" clay sewer line to the north, left only 14' between for a small bore pit 32' long x 12' wide.  With limited space to maneuver, SSC had to get very creative with some of their routine operations, like spoils removal, and shorter casing length.  However it did not impede the construction process and the bore was completed on schedule and on perfect line and grade.

SSC Bore PItAt the City of Glendale's request, SSC installed a 72" Duromax storm drain, the first of its kind to be used in Arizona. Duromax is a lightweight, steel reinforced polyethylene pipe that is designed to meet the long-term structural needs of high performance
water and sewer projects.

With the first phase complete, SSC recently started a second bore at the same location, just inches above the new storm drain.  Utilizing trenchless auger boring SSC will install 130' of 36" casing for a new 20" DIP waterline.  This phase is scheduled to complete by January 16, 2010.
