SSC To Celebrate 40th Anniversary
Will hold ribbon cutting for new facility opening.
In honor of its 40th anniversary, Specialized Services Company will officially open its newly remodeled and expanded facility during a day-long celebration slated for October 23rd.
A special ribbon cutting ceremony will be held midday during which customers, employees, family, and friends, can tour the facility, learn about the company's history and enjoy lunch. Internationally renowned trenchless educator and speaker, Dr. Samuel Ariaratnam, will preside over the ceremony and provide attendees with a brief update on the status of the trenchless construction industry.
The 40th anniversary celebration recognizes SSC's long history of quality and innovation and their unprecedented commitment to superior customer service-a crucial motivation for expansion.
SSC was founded in 1969 by Arvid Veidmark Jr., wife Marcia, and family. Although some of the faces have changed, Veidmark's vision to provide a valuable service to the community is still intact.
For many years now, son Arvid III has worked diligently to expand the company's reach by combining new and innovative technology, with superior customer service. His foresight and enthusiasm has propelled the company to new heights-once a small family business that serviced the local Arizona community, now a leading force in underground utility infrastructure nationwide.

Phoenix CityScape Project
Utility conflicts cause early delays.
At $900 million, the largest private development project in Phoenix is nearing completion. Covering three lineal blocks, CityScape is a 28 story, 2.5 million sq. ft, ultra-modern, multi-use facility being constructed right in the middle of downtown Phoenix.
In addition to a high rise office tower, first phase plans also included expansion of an existing five-story underground garage at Central Avenue. It was reported that this was the most challenging part of phase one construction and caused a number of delays.
Expansion of the underground facility involved the relocating of an expansive network of existing underground utilities that supported the busy downtown area. Like any metropolitan city, tearing up roads and disrupting traffic were major concerns. In addition, relocating the utilities required construction under the new light rail tracks, also disconcerting. SSC was asked to help.
For the SSC team, space was the biggest issue. They were asked to perform two bores at Washington and Central Avenues to install 50 conduits (40-4" and 10-5") but after careful investigation and planning, owner Arvid Veidmark suggested one 54" hand tunnel. "Given the size of the area we had to work in, 24' x 60' for the pit, shoring, crane and other equipment, a hand tunnel was the only option. No other method could be accomplished in that small of a pit," Veidmark said. It took SSC about 5 weeks to successfully complete the bore.

Loop 202 Improvements
Largest ADOT Project of 2009
Last May, ADOT launched one of its largest freeway improvement projects of the year along nine miles of Loop 202 in Phoenix and Tempe.
The $188 million design-build joint venture with Kiewit-Sundt will widen east and west bound lanes and bridges, reconstruct ramps, modify retaining and noise walls and improve drainage systems.
To satisfy the project's subsurface utility engineering requirements, SSC was contracted in early February to vacuum excavate utility conflicts along the construction route, including locating a water main beneath water level on the north side of Tempe Town Lake.
In addition to routine potholing during pre-construction, SSC has since been asked to utilize the vacuum excavator to perform a number of other not-so-common functions on this project, including the removal of slurry from bridge columns and assisting with pier installations.
"This is a great example of the flexibility of vacuum technology," said Arvid Veidmark, III, of Specialized Services Co. "Most contractors consider the vacuum for potholing only. It's uses are really unlimited."
SSC is currently still under contract and will work with the project team until completion sometime in late 2010.
